*Our nation is paying the price:* On June 21, we noted a change in the

We also suggested that, in the process, he might be dumbing his program

Four days later, at the end of an interview, Hayes discussed the process we
thought we had seen playing out on the air. Speaking with Salon’s David

Mining 25: Changes in Brazil Mining Taxation

There is a coincidence in mining tax legislation in the Philippines and
Brazil. Two weeks ago, Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff launched a mining
bill that proposes to double royalties on mineral wealth from 2% to 4%, to
affect mainly iron ore and gold. The levy will also be on gross revenues
rather than profit.
Brazil is the world’s second-largest iron-ore exporter. It currently allows
mining companies to subtract some royalty calculation costs. This will
change and start charging the levy on companies’ gross revenue. Mining

Quote of the Day: On the fatties
Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 18 hours ago
“There is nothing more awe inspiring, nothing more poetic, and really
nothing more amusing, than watching a fat man with momentum… The art of
setting fat men on a collision course has been celebrated as far back as
you care to remember. If this vision doesn’t excite you, you are either a
liar, or rugby probably isn’t the sport for you in the first place.”

I have read almost everything Orwell ever published, and will eventually
read everything, including all the published letters. While no one could
remember every line from every essay, this just doesn't sound like our man
Eric Blair to me. Orwell wasn't given to aphorisms or one-liners. It
doesn't fit in the theme of any book or essay. The essay that seems most
relevant, "Politics and the English Language," does not contain this line.
I was skeptical.

I’ve been gifted a book by a grateful reader (thank you, Madam) on the

have* to do], whether by waking early or staying up late; whether by
self-medicating with doughnuts or or bathing, drinking vast quantities of
