Chris Hayes is becoming a showman!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 3 minutes ago
*TUESDAY, JULY 2, 2013* *Our nation is paying the price:* On June 21, we noted a change in the on-air demeanor of MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. As a performer, we suggested he might be undergoing a type of Maddowization. We also suggested that, in the process, he might be dumbing his program down. To review that post, click here. Four days later, at the end of an interview, Hayes discussed the process we thought we had seen playing out on the air. Speaking with Salon’s David Daley, he discussed the pressure of hosting a show in prime time as opposed to on weekend mornings: HAYES (6/25/... more »

The Perfect District For The DCCC-- MI-06-- Has Been Taken Off The Table By Steve Israel

But he's considered safe by the Beltway Establishment, with another nice free reelection pass signed by his old crony from the Center Aisle Caucus, Steve Israel. The Center Aisle Caucus alumni don't try to defeat each other. Since Pelosi made the colossal mistake of appointing Israel chair of the DCCC, the corrupt, conservative Long Island Democrat has protected some of the most obvious seats needed for a Democratic takeover of Congress. Proof today that people just don't understand the basic Keynesian ideas about deficits. At Roll Call, Nathan Gonzales claims that Obama-era Democrats are "rallying against two of the highest profile accomplishments" of Bill Clinton's presidency. Timothy Carney: How extreme have Dems become? GOP adopts 1990s Dem policies, Dems blast them for it Well, not really. On one of the two issues Gonzales raises -- DOMA -- is certainly a large flip for most Democrats. Glitch, Override and Shutdown (a dystopian trilogy)

This is a review of the Glitch trilogy by Heather Anastasiu. I received a copy of the last book, Shutdown, in exchange for this honest review. Shutdown is available as of today! The Young Adult literature market is flooded with dystopian literature, and while it is my favorite subgenere, I often feel like I am wading through the titles, trying to decide which ones are worth a read and which ones to skip. Where have all those post-Olympic tourists gone?

The mass protests in Brazil are big news down here. In part, Brazilians are mad that the government is spending billions to host the World Cup and the Olympics, and don’t buy promises of economic benefit. B.C.’s post-Olympic tourism stats support the protesters’ skepticism. The promised increase in visitors didn’t happen. In fact, two years after the Games British Columbia actually lost ground as a tourist destination. In 2007, B.C. had 4,837,000 international visitors, 26.9 per cent of the Canadian total. The one theme I would like to see fully introduced into the teaching of history is that of the alternative voice. I have no idea if this 'seemingly audacious' tin-foil-hat film NOW YOU SEE ME (about a group of magicians called The Four horsemen who rob banks and give the money to their audience) will 'really go' where it promises to i.e. revealing the *Eye of Horus* inter-dimensional hyper-historical hierarchy that's been allowed to run riot on Planet Earth for centuries... ...but there's a prominent anti-investigative tagline that states, "The closer you think you are, the less you'll actually see." Mining 25: Changes in Brazil Mining Taxation

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 10 hours ago
There is a coincidence in mining tax legislation in the Philippines and Brazil. Two weeks ago, Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff launched a mining bill that proposes to double royalties on mineral wealth from 2% to 4%, to affect mainly iron ore and gold. The levy will also be on gross revenues rather than profit. Brazil is the world’s second-largest iron-ore exporter. It currently allows mining companies to subtract some royalty calculation costs. This will change and start charging the levy on companies’ gross revenue. Mining comprises 4 percent of its GDP and almost a quarter of... more »

Death Valley: highest temperature on Earth will survive 100th anniversary

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 11 hours ago
Tons of journalists were recently hyping the warm weather that came to California and other places. Fox News and many others talk about "tied records" and "baked West". But the real story which is almost totally overlooked is the comparison of the absolute temperature record on Earth and the modest temperatures in recent years that had no chance to match it. This real story is clearly inconvenient to the climate alarmists, one of the most unhinged and dishonest cliques of demagogues who have ever walked on the face of Earth, and journalists many of whom have always been trying to ... more »

U.N. Nuclear Chief warns of 'dirty bomb' threat but dead silent on Fukushima

Penny at Penny for your thoughts - 20 hours ago
More action is needed to stop militants* (?)* acquiring plutonium or highly-enriched uranium that could be used for atomic bombs, nuclear experts and government officials said on Monday. Analysts say radical groups could theoretically build a crude but deadly nuclear bomb if they have the money, technical knowledge and the amount of fissile material needed. Speaking at a meeting in Vienna, Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned against a "false sense of security" over the danger of nuclear terrorism. *MONDAY, JULY 1, 2013* *Shows how the pundit corps works:* Yesterday morning, Howard Kurtz hosted his final edition on CNN’s Reliable Sources, the program “where we turn a critical lens on the media.” Or so Kurtz said, once again, as he always does. Kurtz has hosted this program for the past fifteen years. Each Sunday, he has asked a group of mainstream pundits to come on TV and pretend to critique their own guild. Now, he’s been hired away by Fox. Yesterday, as Kurtz signed off, he reminisced about four major stories he has covered at Reliable Sources. We were struck by the stor... more »

We've been trying to make the case-- so far without any success-- that the DCCC make an effort, even if it's one that takes more than one cycle, to defeat Darrell Issa in a purple district Obama won in 2008. Last cycle Issa beat grassroots candidate Jerry Tetalman 59-41-- primarily because of Issa's huge margin in the smaller part of the district, the Orange County part. The biggest part of the district, San Diego County, saw a closer result, Issa 56% and Tetalman 44%. Issa, who always acts in the interests of corporate behemoths raised $2,478,710 last cycle. Conor Friedersdorf had a perfectly fine column over at The Atlantic today giving Eric Cantor the business for being a wet sack of mush, at least in his rhetoric. Friedersdorf listens carefully to Cantor and hears nothing but the stalest of cliches; no policy, no stirring language, nothing.
