IMF Report On Iraq’s Economy Sees Short-Term Growth, But Long-Term Structural Problems

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 6 minutes ago
In May 2013, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) released a short report on Iraq’s economy. It predicted continued growth in the short to medium-term, but warned of structural problems as well. Iraq is obviously famous for its oil industry, which still has huge potential to expand. The issue with the country’s economy is that there is little else to build upon. The government also plays a dominant role with all its inefficiencies, and that has a negative effective upon the business environment. That represents the dichotomy of Iraq. Oil presents a huge source of wealth, but it c... more »

The Hidden Hammy Hand

According to a puff-piece by Peter Baker in yesterday's *New York Times*, President Obama's perceived weakness and helplessness at the dawn of his second term is only a mirage. Behind the scenes, the latest spin has it, Barack is strong-arming the critics and facing various crises using something called the "hidden hand" approach. This is apparently a pivot from the first term's *Leading* *from Behind* propaganda that excused drone strikes, and is not to be confused with Adam Smith's *Invisible Hand* of the Free Market -- although as a New Democrat, Barack is every inch the Wall Str... more »

Americans know their politicians are corrupt. Three quarters of U.S. citizens surveyed by *Transparency International* viewed American politics as "corrupt" or "very corrupt." That says something, nothing good, for the self-proclaimed "greatest democracy on earth." What was a bit surprising was that 62% of Canadians, along with majorities of Aussies and Brits, also consider their governments corrupt. Most western Europeans seem to be of the same mind. 24% of Canadian respondents claimed corruption has increased a lot over the past two years, 29% say it has increased a little,... more »

I think this is extremely important in our understanding of a whole range of skills were reaction becomes preternatural. Several clocks are integrated but this can also be selected for. The quick lesson is that key skills need to be made autonomous. Thus a long ritual in order to aim a long bow may well be seriously counterproductive while a simple draw and shoot is far easier to train up. One still needs to master all the movements but the objective must be to make them automatic. Up until now, we worked under the assumption that it all tied together somewhat independe... more »

Just Three Pints of Beer a Week

I am not entirely sure that the conclusions are fully warranted, but it clear that sustaining high level brain function and chronic beer consumption are seriously contra indicated. The more serious problem is all this is also tied into our social behavior and sexual protocols. So it is not a case of simply changing habits for the majority of people. The clear point in all this is that three pints or three glasses are a bit too much. I would like to understand if we can find a threshold in this that may allow one glass per session for the known benefits. It could even ... more »

However, in their Exothermic Double-Disk Dark Matter, Matthew McCullough of MIT and Lisa Randall of Harvard adopt a very different philosophy about the inner structure of dark matter. It isn't composed of individual structureless particles that arise from some symmetries. The video above isn't about the Minimum Wage. It's about the Tea Party world view. You should watch it. It pretty much explains why the country's politics are so screwed up. I don't think Bachmann is consciously lying, although almost nothing she's saying has any relationship to objective truth-telling. I think she's just ignorant, ignorant of the most basic facts she's warbling about to the fringe loons and bigots who pay any attention to her. Now we don't know what the standard deviation might be, but we have to assume it would be reasonable large, which would mean that some days would be much lower, while on other days, we could easily expect 300 or more to be killed in a single day, if the 5000/month were to be believable. David Suzuki claims Canada doesn't need more immigrants, "we're full." What's more, Suzuki argues that Canadian immigration policies and procedures are "disgusting", exploit applicants and inflict brain drains on other countries. Suzuki contends that climate change is reducing the amount of space and resources we have to support our existing population. The thing is, he just might be right. Here in British Columbia, farmers are reporting that climate change impacts are already shortening the province's growing seasons. British Columbia is very susceptible to climate change. W... more »

An order dismissing a motion for contempt is interlocutory

Simmonds v. Simmonds, 2013 ONCA 479: [3] The appellant relies on *Pimiskern v. Brophey**,* 2013 O.J. No. 505 to argue that an order dismissing a motion for contempt is a final order. [4] The respondent concedes that an order finding contempt is a final order but argues that because the motion judge dismissed the motion for contempt, the motion judge's order is interlocutory and not binding on the trial judge, and that an appeal accordingly does not lie to this court.

This went through huge problems including the complete un-interest amongst the Iraqi military leadership for this task.
