Auckland’s uncontrollable sprawl

Auckland has been “wedded to a 1950s vision of uncontrolled sprawl,” says
Labour Leader David Shearer.
“Auckland's mayor is standing firm against urban sprawl,” say commentators.
“Auckland’s sprawl is unsustainable and must stop,” says virtually every
planner everywhere.
And yet … *what* uncontrolled sprawl?
Here’s Auckland in 1984:

This year, finally, I’ve decided that the small face of liberty up there on

July 4, 2013, American Independence Day, seems the appropriate day in which

The neocons have cheered on all of the Arab Spring revolutions in the

Things look bleak for most newspapers. Postmedia is Canada's largest

Expenses were down 9.1 per cent, thanks to a big cost-cutting drive. Based

Whilst acknowledging the interest and quality of the programmes, I

Stuart Prebble's review comes to a not dissimilar conclusion:
Anyone harbouring the view about the BBC that it is by instinct in favour

their suspicions reinforced by listening to the excellent three-part series

NSA spies globally. Enormous amounts of meta-data are collected. It's been
ongoing for decades. Post-9/11, it intensified. It's out-of-control today.
It's lawless. It's menacing. It persists.
Spying domestically isn't for national security. Nor is monitoring allies.
It's about control. It's for economic advantage. It's to be one up on
foreign competitors. It's for information used advantageously in trade,
political, and military relations.

Wall Street Banks Extract Enormous Fees From The Paychecks Of Millions Of American Workers

Would you be angry if you had to pay a big Wall Street bank a fee before
you could get the money that you worked so hard to earn? Unfortunately,
that is exactly the situation that millions of American workers find
themselves in today.
An increasing number of U.S. companies are paying their workers using

employers that are doing this.

A new study conducted by a U.S. military adviser examining a year of drone

times more civilian casualties than strikes carried out by manned aircraft.
This is especially interesting given the radically understated claims about
the number of civilians killed by drone strikes made in the past and claims

Massive Earthquakes Make Volcanoes Sink
arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
The linkage between earthquakes and apparent resultant volcanic activity
has always been inferred and generally accepted. However, today we have a
smoking gun to make thing completely certain. The quake and the actual
vertical drop in the volcanic chain turn out to be effectively simultaneous.
Thus we can be certain that Earthquakes do trigger the pent up subsidence
of volcanic buildups as a matter of course and can be predicted.
In fact volcano prediction modeling for most can be predicated to
triggering quake likelihood. Actual stand alone events are what we know and ... more »

Phytophthora austrocedrae has been spotted on juniper bushes in the Lake
