Bob Mankoff names his 11 favorite "New Yorker" cartoons -- at least as of that particular moment (and we sneak a peek)

DRONES EVERYWHERE THESE DAYS
The experimental X-47B drone has successfully landed on a US Navy aircraft
carrier for the first time. This means the US can now launch drones
overseas without needing to use bases in other countries. The unmanned
X-47B aircraft, which is a prototype drone the size of a fighter jet
developed by the American defense technology company Northrop Grumman, took
off from a naval air station in Maryland on Wednesday. The drone then
landed on the USS George H.W. Bush off the coast of Virginia.

A GREAT ANTI-WAR FILM
Johnny Got His Gun is a 1971 anti-war film based on the novel of the same
name written and directed by Dalton Trumbo and starring Timothy Bottoms,
Jason Robards and Donald Sutherland with Diane Varsi. The film is well
known for distinguishing between Joe's reality and fantasy with black and
white for the hospital, and color for his dreams and memories. His dreams
are drug induced, as when he talks to his dead father and Christ, with the
color being saturated. His memories are in a clearer color, such as the
fishing trip and his last night with Kareen. Joe's face is never seen in

Nihilism... Republican Style

reckless and aggressive GOP nihilism in Congress. The Republicans are no
longer a legitimate opposition party, "instead opting for a kind of
post-policy nihilism in which sabotaging the Obama agenda has become its
only guiding governing light." He goes on to ask Republicans in Washington
an important question that few in the corporate media ever consider:

Mogul and Roswell
I was doing a video lap the other day, which is what I call channel

experiment to recreate the Mogul balloon array and then see what would
happen when it fell back to earth. They kept the balloons tethered, I don’t
think the array was quite as large as those run in 1947, and they shot down
the balloons with a pellet gun. Their debris field was small, there were
large amounts of twine or rope that held the array together and the radar
targets were not particularly degraded.
Or, in other words, it didn’t match ... more »

Mayor David N. Dinkins openly criticized the New York City police union and
some of its members yesterday, arguing in an emotional appearance that
their rowdy demonstration at City Hall on Wednesday showed why minority
communities lack confidence in some officers.
Using his lead-off role at a City Council hearing, he said the
demonstration proved the need for an independent, all-civilian agency to
investigate police misconduct.

the many pro-life lawmakers backing the woman ban, crafted his bill after

The Half-Farm Bill squeezed through the House this afternoon, with all
Democrats opposing it along with a handful of Republicans. This is the Farm

The story, here, is that the original House version of the bill failed when
an amendment was adopted which cut SNAP (food stamp) funding, meaning that
it lost Democratic votes, while Republicans deserted the bill anyway
because it was still too high-spending for them. The leadership "solved"
that by splitting the ... more »
Non lethal...
An apparently healthy 23-year-old man from Greater Manchester died
yesterday from a “medical episode” after being shot with a police taser gun. Such
weapons are usually described as non-lethal. The United Nations describes
them as torture devices. Many governments, including the British
government, disagree. Here is a Wikipedia list, I’m sure it’s not
exhaustive, of incidents in the last ten years where taser guns have cause
significant injury or death. Police taser gun use is increasing in Britain
(up 66% in the year up to March 2011).

Will there ever be an episode portraying Mohammad similarly? Somehow I

At the end of the programme, it was shown that this was a different Jesus,
so that's OK then. Then another Jesus appeared along with his twin Judas, a
blasphemous explanation of this situation was presented earlier in the
episode.

'I don't want to be pregnant now' should be the only answer a woman seeking

And the grand thing is -- in Canada it is the only reason a woman has to

for over 25 years.
Yet Judith Timson says that most women won't talk about their abortions
because that is the very reason they had them.

Will justice be served for George Zimmerman? BREAKING: Jury can consider 3rd degree charges based on "aggravated child abuse?"......

From Legal Insurrection:
As expected, the Judge in the George Zimmerman case ruled that in addition

Islamophobia – The Irrational Fear of Questioning Islam - Liberties Alliance :: Liberties Alliance
A must read article... Here's the introduction:
'This article will discuss the way the word 'Islamophobia' has been used as
a political weapon rather than as an honest way of communicating an idea.
The main problem arises from the fact that by combining the words 'Islam'
and 'phobia' the resulting term is itself contradictory given current
usage. It ignores rational fears that people may have and in the best
Stalinist tradition labels those with such fears as being mentally ill.
We will start by showing how the term 'Islamophobia' as it is currently
used is merely a political tool... more »

Pope Francis Sends Signal
What is so clear and should have been from the instance he chose the name
of Francis, is that this Pope abhors pomp and circumstance. This little
vignette shows us that some must learn this the hard way. Even better he is
establishing a collegial aura in the Vatican that is long overdue. I would
be really impressed if he resurrected the Rule of Twelve.
There are many who wish to dismiss the Papacy as somehow unimportant or
some such canard, though that became shockingly wrong headed with the reign
of John Paul II. Yet rejectionism is still fashionable. We forget just how

Reviving Native Food and Farming Traditions
Again these are the early beginnings of a completely new dispensation of

draft animals.

USDA Approves Horse Slaughterhouse to Produce Meat for Human Consumption
Our society continues to prefer denial over all aspects of raising
domesticated animal. The harsh truth is that acceptance of nurture makes
you the individual equally responsible for how the animal lives and yes how
it dies. At the same time, eating meat is accepting the gift of that
nurture and your gift to the support of land husbandry.
A viable horse meat market would establish demand for horse meat that
would provide a base level of support for the many breeds that we are
struggling to sustain.
It is not going to happen of course as everyone prefers their version o... more »
Permafrost Change
This is an interesting question. Just how stable is the permafrost.
Particularly as it could actually be a remnant of the Ice Age itself. It
may still be in the long process of simply disappearing by cycling back and
forth over centuries.
In the event, it nicely explains the long release of CO2 in the post Ice
Age geological record that has been observed over millions of years. This
release cycle typically last over several centuries.
For the present, warmer Arctic summers appear to be nicely causing the
permafrost to contract modestly.

This is a a problem that will go away once we make a full conversion to

The biochar sequesters the nutrients until called upon and prevents losses

Experts tell us that until we choose to live green because it's the right

Those of us who promote an Eco-friendly lifestyle try to encourage others,
often pointing out that green living is also frugal. But that presents a
problem because it bases our lifestyle on a precarious foundation; namely,
our income.

The June 30 revolution in Egypt reflected the gathering of more than 32

The purpose behind such a popular mass protest was to call on President

The interesting response in western mass media and in particular the U.S.

*"Never Despair"*
by Sam Smith
“To view our times as decadent and dangerous, to mistrust the government,
to imagine that those in power are not concerned with our best interests is
not paranoid but perceptive; to be depressed, angry or confused about such
things is not delusional but a sign of consciousness. Yet our culture
suggests otherwise. But if all this is true, then why not despair? The
simple answer is this: despair is the suicide of imagination. Whatever
reality presses upon us, there still remains the possibility of imagining

once again provides cover for a darker "promotion."*
*"[I]t is a bit sad to see Pope Francis, who has been doing wonderful
things in his short time at the Vatican, play the old game of
self-certification at the top of a saint-making factory. Many hope he will
make needed changes in the church. But in promoting John Paul II he is
exalting a man who fought every one of those changes."*

NEOCONS SPLIT OVER AID TO EGYPT
US law is explicit when it comes to making considerations about giving aid
to foreign governments that have come to power via a coup – that government
doesn’t get aid; simple as that.
However, in the case of Egypt, it places the Obama administration in a
conundrum. It also puts neoconservatives in a conundrum as well which has
caused a rift over neoconservative foreign policy with regards to Egypt.
So far, Obama hasn’t made any decision regarding future aid to Egypt while
an interim government remains in office as a result of the coup. It is for
this reason that Obama hasn’t actual... more »
Tarpley On Why The Muslim Brotherhood Failed In Egypt - Part II
An excerpt from the article, *"Al-Qaradawi stands behind Morsi’s decision
to cut off the ties with Syria,"* (June 17): "Al-Shareq al-Awsat sources
point out that “the Egyptian president Muhammad Morsi has met, before two
days of deciding to cut off the ties with the Syrian regime, a delegation
of 19 Muslims most of them are Salafies headed by the Sheikh Youssef
al-Qaradawi."

Take Action: Join Amnesty International to Demand Compassionate Release for Herman Wallace Now!
*Please take action here!*
Today, in response to the tragic news that Herman Wallace is terminally ill
with cancer, Amnesty International has launched a campaign calling for
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to immediately release Herman on
humanitarian grounds.
Following his initial diagnosis on June 14, Herman continues to be held in
isolation at Hunt Correctional Center's prison infirmary. Reflecting on his
confinement while battling cancer, Herman says: "My own body has now become
a tool of torture against me."
"After decades of cruel conditions and a conviction that continues t... more »

I hadn’t realised the Retailers Association was run by a moron
There are arseholes everywhere. One of them runs the Retailers Association.
John Albertson, Retailers Association CEO, wants to add a tariff to every
single purchase you make on the internet—to make your books more expensive,
your clothes more costly, your boots and shoes and software and music more
pricy.
That’s why I call him an arsehole.
Internet retailing has been a boon for every New Zealand buyer. Instead of
being restricted to just the few shops in our local area, we now have the
whole of the world’s goods available at the click of a mouse, at the lower
prices a worldwide ... more »
The bad news in one chart [updated]
So you’ve been hearing news that the American economy has recovered.
You’ve heard that things are on the way up.
What you’ve been hearing however is bollocks.
Here’s the bad news in one chart—after shedding jobs at a rapid rate during
the onset of the depression recession, the percentage of Americans in work
has got no better. Only 58.7% of the civilian adult population of 245
million was working last month, and only 47% of Americans had a full-time
job*…*
There is no depression in America?
*UPDATE*: But, but, what about all those news reports about accelerating
American GDP? K... more »
The tyranny of light bulbs
Who says Boehner's House of Dysfunction can't get anything done? Why just
today Republicans rescued America from freedom robbing energy efficiency.
The House on Wednesday voted to block the enforcement of light bulb
standards that many say would effectively force people to buy more
expensive compact fluorescent bulbs.
Just like last year, Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) proposed the language
as an addition to the energy and water spending bill. His language
prohibits the use of any funds at the Department of Energy to implement the
standards.
Of course, the law doesn't actually fo... more »

Sign BAR’s Petition: Anti-Racist Educators Should Not Issue Ghetto Passes To Teach For America
‘If this is how “anti-racism education” works – giving cover to
organizations and policies that hurt people of color more than anybody
else, it might be time to re-think that whole contraption as well.’ — Bruce
A. Dixon Black Agenda Report (BAR) has been a consistent and principled

The Koch plan for prosperity
Charles Koch studies the problem of poor Americans. He's figured out what's
keeping the poor folk down and has come up with what he thinks is a
brilliant solution. Eliminating the minimum wage.
But how to convince the working poor that this odious requirement they be
paid at least $7.25 a hour is a bad thing? That the real problem is a
"culture of dependency" on government mandated fair wages because, as the
Buddhists say -- money is suffering? Well, he launched a $200,000 ad
campaign for that. Thus says the man with a personal worth of $43 billion:
The Kansas ad does not specific... more »
How to save newspapers
I’ve painted a grim future for newspapers in the last few posts.
So what can be done?
One option for companies is to cash out. Cut costs, raise rates, make as
much as possible for and then sell the assets and walk away.
But let’s assume owners see value in the brands. Postmedia took in $830
million last year and generated positive cash flow. If newspapers can slow
the revenue decline, trim expenses to fit a new model and find new
audiences, they might have a viable, though much smaller, future.
First, newspaper managers have to admit they’re in big trouble and the
business model is br... more »

When Republicans refuse to govern
It's not exactly news to anyone who has been paying attention that
Republicans have embraced full out obstruction of any meaningful
legislation at all since the day Obama took office. What is news is that
the Beltway BigMedia is finally acknowledging it. Today Jon Chait remarks
on how obstruction has become the guiding principle of the GOP to the
detriment of our country. At least for as long as that "blah" man holds the
Oval Office.
A rational legislative strategy would consider the relative benefits of a
law to maintaining the status quo, and weigh the possibilities of a better

The Fed's First 100 Years
I spent today at the NBER's conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of
the Federal Reserve. Among the conferences I have attended over the years,
this was among the best. You can find the papers presented here.
HEADING TO MD TEST CENTRAL
I am sitting in a very busy Los Angeles airport waiting for my flight to
Kauai, Hawaii. The waiting line for some food is more than 30 minutes -
I'd highly recommend more than one restaurant in this section of the
airport. Talk about a monopoly.
I'm going back to Kauai for two reasons (was here for meeting in February
2012). First it's sort of a half-way point for my trip to the Philippines
and Australia so I can break up that long journey. Secondly, and most
importantly, the Pentagon has an ever expanding "missile defense" test
range on Kauai. They launch dummy warheads from... more »
