"Ah, the languorous days of endless summer! Who among us doesn’t remember
those days and wonder wistfully where they’ve gone? Why does time seem to
speed up as we age? Even the summer solstice — the longest, sunniest day of
the year — seems to have passed in a flash. No less than the great William
James opined on the matter, thinking that the apparent speed of time’s
passage was a result of adults’ experiencing fewer memorable events: “Each

BOSTON (CBS) – A State Police photographer has released new images of the
arrest of suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Sgt. Sean Murphy, a tactical photographer with the State Police, gave the
photos to Boston Magazine on Thursday. Sgt. Murphy says he was furious with
Rolling Stone’s decision to “glamorize” an accused terrorist on its cover,
so he wanted to offer up the new photos as an alternative.
In a statement, a State Police spokesman said, “the dissemina... more »
Bernhard Riemann: an anniversary
Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 day ago
Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann was born in a village in the Kingdom of
Hanover on September 17th, 1826 and died in Selasca (Verbania), Northern
Italy, on July 20th, 1866, i.e. 147 years ago. As you can see, he was 2
months short of 40 years when he died.
His father was a poor Lutheran pastor and a Napoleonic war veteran. His
mother died when he was a kid. He was the second (oldest) among six
children. Bernhard was shy, timid, afraid of speaking in public, and
suffered from psychological problems and breakdowns. His math skills were
obvious early on. However, he started to study a ... more »
In 1960 Detroit had the highest per capita income in America
James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
And a population of two million.
Now with 700,000, half functionally illiterate, the city is bankrupt.
But the suburbs are fine. Troy is fantastically wealthy and Auburn Hills is
nice.
But if you live in Troy you don't go to Detroit.
What happened was the city died and the donut ring survived.
Now that seems impossible in Canada but is it? Industrial cities like
Hamilton can go downhill while Dundas and Ancaster grow. Even proud Toronto
could (especially if the current municipal politics continues) be overtaken
by Markham and Pickering and Oakville.
Don't think Detroit has n... more »

* “US Navy Vet A Real-life Jason Bourne?”*
Wakes Up With No Memory But Speaks Perfect Swedish
by Mike Adams
“The fictional character Jason Bourne is a covert intelligence operative
who survives an intense mind control "reprogramming" process to become a
government assassin. After being shot while on an assassination mission, he
forgets his identity and tries to rediscover his true past. That's the
storyline of the Bourne series of motion pictures.
Last week, a possible real-life Jason Bourne awoke in a motel room. While
his I.D. revealed he was a U.S. Navy veteran named Michael ... more »
Oddly we find Barry Soetoro registered to vote in Dc as of October 15 , 2012 1 is this an election year prank or any indication of electoral hijinks ?

Did
President Barack Obama find a way to vote twice in the 2012 elections?
I honestly have no idea but we do have some incredible new evidence that
raises serious questions. First let’s start with what we know about
Barack
Obama. Let’s go back to a November 6th article on Slate.com:
President Obama will be able to spend as much time campaigning on
Election
Day as he wants to because he voted in Illinois on Oct. 25. An Explainer

Bad Solutions-- Whether Bipartisan Or Not-- Are Still Just Bad Solutions

THE PROBLEM SOLVERS (pretty painting by Attila Richard Lukacs)
Obama pressured Democrats into a putrid deal with Republicans (and through
them, Wall Street) on the student loan debacle. Jenna Johnson reports for
the *Washington Post* that "the deal was brokered by a bipartisan group of
senators who have been negotiating for weeks, with the help of Department
of Education staffers who have been camped out in their offices. On
Tuesday, the senators ventured to the White House to meet with President
Obama, who urged them to make a decision."
Under this new deal, finalized Thursday morn... more »
Krugman Warns of China's Unstable Economy. Will Ottawa Listen?
The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 1 day ago
Maybe Steve Harper picked a bad moment to bind Canada's economic future to
China's. The way Paul Krugman sees it, China has a structural time bombwithin its economy and it's ready to blow:
*China ...seems to invest only to expand its future ability to invest even
more. America, admittedly on the high side, devotes 70 percent of its gross
domestic product to consumption; for China, the number is only half that
high, while almost half of G.D.P. is invested. *
*How is that even possible? What keeps consumption so low, and how have the
Chinese been able to invest so much without (unti... more »
Legendary White House Correspondent, Helen Thomas, Dead at 92
The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 1 day ago
She covered every administration from Kennedy to Obama and ruffled a few
feathers along the way.
*Helen Thomas, whose bottomless curiosity and unquenchable drive made her a
prominent White House reporter at a time when men dominated the profession,
died Saturday at her apartment in Washington. She was 92. *
*Her blunt questions and sharp tone made her a familiar personality not
only in the sometimes parochial universe inside the Beltway but also to
nationwide television audiences. *
*Presidents grew to respect, even to like, Ms. Thomas for her
forthrightness and energy, which sus... more »
The End of Growth

It's not the custom of people my age to go back and re-educate themselves
on economics and I know why - ugh! I thought I understood economics from
three or four Econ courses I did in undergrad (psst, I did really, really
well on them too). I was wrong.
Here's the thing. In universities around the developed world they're
still teaching the same orthodoxy they taught me - and it's wrong. We
didn't see it in my student days but you have to work hard *not* to see the
contradictions, omissions and outright fallacies in classical economics in
the context of today's reality.

Vindication: A Requirement, Not an Option

*I know that Eric Holder is reviewing what happened down there, but* *I
think it's* *important for people to have some clear expectations here.
Traditionally, these are issues of state and local government, the criminal
code. And law enforcement is traditionally done at the state and local
levels, not at the federal levels. That doesn't mean, though, that as a
nation we can't do some things that I think would be productive. So let me
just give a couple of specifics that I'm still bouncing around with my
staff, so we're not rolling out some five-point plan, but some areas where

Dubai sentences Norwegian woman who reported rape
Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 1 day ago
A woman is raped and yet found found guilty under sharia law. Yet the BBC
don't condemn Dubai except for being 'conservative'.
'Dubai has undergone a rapid transformation in recent years, emerging as a
five-star trade and tourism destination with its tax-free salaries and
year-round sunshine.
It is now one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities with foreign workers
and visitors greatly outnumbering the local population.
But it remains a deeply conservative region, and its strict laws have
caught out foreigners in the past. Public displays of affection and
drunkenness are frowned u... more »
