Why Is The Jobs Market Growing So Slowly?
A few nights ago, Ken explained-- via economist Dean Baker-- how "politicians
are using old superstitions and deliberate lies to scare people away from
the sort of fiscal stimulus that would get the economy back on track." And
that, more than anything, is the bottom line of the slow recovery in the
real economy.
Roland just got back from Maine-- a trip that included a lot of driving and
a lot of talk radio. He just informed me that talk radio is pushing a GOP
talking point big time: the slow growth economy is the fault of Obamacare

Democracy? Not so much. For the most part, Canadians hold their democracy
in contempt and have no desire to fight to improve it. It's a-okay for most
Canadians (or at least an indifferent matter) if the government of the day

outright refuses to show the people's representatives the facts about their
true costs.
So, you can throw fiscal responsibility out the window as well.

There is some good stuff:
1. Media effects: Dan Hopkins on how Fox News helped Republicans.
Interesting -- but don't overinterpret the findings. There appears to have
been a real but small direct effect; my guess is that the real effects of
the partisan press are found in internal party politics and incentives, not
in general election voting.
2. Steve Benen reminds us that people can hear us talking. All of us.
3. And a nice Brad Plumer post on "wasting billions."

Summers on the Corporate Tax
On the issue of corporate tax reform, Larry Summers tries to forge a
compromise:
The United States should eliminate the distinction between repatriated and

foreign income (after allowances for taxes paid to other governments) at a
fixed rate well below its current corporate rate, perhaps in the range of
15 percent.

Among the many great benefits of living in society is the enormous boon we
all enjoy in a free society from the Division of Labour: the multiplication
of knowledge in a division-of-labour society; the benefits from genius; the
ability to specialise; the productive machinery and the economies of
learning and motion that emerge from that specialisation—all part of what
economist George Reisman describes as “the general gain from the existence

"Governments abhor transparency, and governments lie. To keep them

That requires media that are aggressive and probing, and that are not

How I killed newspapers, Part Three: The bad news
Newspapers will find a way out of these bleak times, some journalists
maintain.
Here’s hoping. But the situation is grim and there’s no clear path to a
viable future.
I like newspapers and believe they’re important on many levels.
But they are in big trouble.
Two years ago, RBC Capital Markets started “following” Postmedia, Canada’s
largest newspaper company, and issuing reports for investors.
RBC’s first report set a target share price of $14. That valued the company
at $635 million, much less than the $1.1 billion Postmedia paid a year
earlier for the newspapers from Canwest, then... more »

As the nation sweltered in front of its TV sets, there's a game of
political tennis taking place far away from Centre Court. The Blairites
thought they'd scored an ace when dodgy doings were uncovered in Falkirk.

stroke was hamstrung by his line that Unite was "within the rules". As a
result, they have mostly gone wide. With their work done, Ed Miliband has

The whole world changed
Are you the same?
If not,
Who are you now?
What do you want?
Know thy Soul
Be very clear
Person, place and thing
Will respond
In kind
In time
Longing to kiss that light
So shake off what is not you
Be clean
And ready to be seen
Fulfillment is near
Tho in the present
What shall I say?
The things you want
Are excited
And asking…
When will you be here?

Sunday Question for Liberals
We're doing the flip side of last week: what politician(s) are you most
embarrassed that you supported?
As I explained in the conservative question, I'm not talking about, say,
support for Reagan or Bush before you became a liberal. I'm looking for
either politicians you supported who turned out to be other than what you
thought at the time, or politicians you had to hold your nose to support
(yeah, I know, some of you went to this in last week's flip side, but I was
already planning to do it as this week's question...).
Sunday Question for Conservatives
The flip side of last week's question: what politician are you most
embarrassed at having supported?
As with last week, I'm not looking for big changes you've made (in other
words, not looking for those who supported McGovern or Clinton or Obama
when they were young and liberal) -- I'm interested in either politicians
who disappointed you by being something other than what you thought at the
time, or (equally interesting to me) politicians you didn't like at the
time but thought were the best choice for strategic reasons.

Personal Financial Planning is one of the most important things you should

Now where are we? The banks are as predatory as ever. The

majority policies that have hollowed out the world economy to the point
where financial sector alchemy and parasitism is the biggest game in town.

Targeting Foreign Leaders: Longstanding US Policy
Stephen Lendman
No one's safe from America's long arm. From inception, CIA operatives
developed skills to kill.
Fidel Castro survived hundreds of assassination attempts. He knows best how
Washington operates.
Other leaders weren't as lucky. In April 1994, CIA surface-to-air missiles
killed Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundi President Cyprien
Ntaryamira.
Downing their plane put Paul Kagame in power. He became Washington's man in
Rwanda. Ethnic slaughter continued what began earlier. It's longstanding US
policy. It advances America's imperium.

ElBaradei Heads Egypt's Interim Government
Stephen Lendman
It's official. He's Washington's man in Cairo. More on that below.
Ousting Morsi unleashed widespread violence. Pitched battles erupted. Both
sides clashed with each other.
On July 6, Russia Today reported Friday's toll caused 36 deaths. One or
more others followed. Over 1,100 were injured. Unknown numbers were
arrested.
Neither side's yielding so far. Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces
(SCAF) is notoriously brutal. Mercy isn't in its vocabulary. It conspired
with Washington against Morsi.
Popular outrage made him damaged goods. He's gone. He's under hou... more »

Listener complaint partially upheld but BBC programme still available | BBC Watch
'... there is no point in the BBC wasting public resources to address
audience complaints if, in cases in which those complaints are found to be
valid, the output concerned is neither subsequently amended to reflect that
fact, or removed.'
The BBC's hatred of Israel knows no bounds, anybody fancy complaining about

Courts Rule Vaccines Containing MMR and Thimerosal Caused Autism and Brain Damage
Dees Illustration Joe Martino
All information containing new and unprecedented conclusions begins by
being violently opposed by those who create the prior information and those
who subscribe heavily to it. This is very much the case with the link
between Autism Spectrum Disorder and vaccines; mainly the MMR vaccine and
other thimerosal-containing vaccines.
It is clear that the stance from mainstream science is that there is no
link between vaccines and autism. You can find more about that here. But
for many people this does not dispel all concern. Dr. Hooker, PhD, PE says
that th... more »
The "Primitives" Have Got It Right
In a recent article, Noam Chomsky asks the question we should all be
asking: "Who will defend the earth?" The people who are desperately
interested in the answer to that question are people we have traditionally
thought of as "backward." But, Chomsky writes, they understand what is at
stake:
That the Earth now desperately needs defense from impending environmental
catastrophe is surely obvious to any rational and literate person. The
different reactions to the crisis are a most remarkable feature of current
history.
At the forefront of the defense of nature are those often called... more »
Lead Gardasil Vaccine Creator Confesses to Clear Conscience
Heather Callaghan
Media, medical and science claims love to push that untreated HPV (Human
Papilloma Virus) perhaps-maybe-someday can lead to cervical cancer. So far,
it can't be confirmed if getting Gardasil and Cervavix actually take
cervical cancer cases down. What's really shaky is the safety of a
seriously under-evaluated vaccine pushed on both young girls and boys who
may or may not become sexually active soon and may never contract HPV.
According to the manufacturers, the vaccine only addresses 4 out of 40 HPV
strains.
What is confirmed is that 44 girls have died after v... more »
Venezuela Grants Snowden Asylum
On July 6, Russia Today headlined " 'Free from imperial persecution:'
Venezuela offers Snowden asylum."
Days earlier, President Nicolas Maduro said asylum would be "seriously"
considered if sought. Snowden deserves a "humanitarian medal," he added.
"If this young man is punished, nobody in the world will ever dare to tell
the truth," he stressed.
He's a man of his word. It's official. Maduro granted Snowden asylum. He
did so on Venezuela's Day of Independence.

11 Signs That Italy Is Descending Into A Full-Blown Economic Depression
Michael Snyder
When you get into too much debt, really bad things start to happen. Sadly,
that is exactly what is happening to Italy right now. Harsh austerity
measures are causing the Italian economy to slow down even more than it was
previously. And yet even with all of the austerity measures, the Italian
government just continues to rack up even more debt. This is the exact
same path that we watched Greece go down. Austerity causes government
revenues to drop which causes deficit reduction targets to be missed which
causes even more austerity measures to become necessary.

Insanity in the genes.
During the few years I contributed to the Biased-BBC blog the area that
particularly interested me was the BBC’s one-sided attitude towards all
Israel-related matters, and latterly the BBC’s naïve, misguided and flawed
interpretation of Arab Spring; from ecstatic live reporting from Tahrir
Square, to the ongoing Pollyannaish euphoria over the dawning of democracy
throughout the Arab World.
Those pieces are archived on that blog until another site revamp sends them
into cyber-oblivion, but they still seem relevant, despite everything that
has occurred since.

Another debate with an anarchist in facebook. It started in one thread

started a new fb status just on the debate on limited vs. zero government.
This is seven pages long. 3.600+ words. Enjoy with your fave drinks :-)
