Neil Young Contest Update: Last Call

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 16 minutes ago
Tomorrow afternoon we'll randomly pick the winner of the Neil Young contest. So, it's still not too late to enter. Like we explained last week, it's easy to win the RIAA-certified double platinum award for Neil's classic *Harvest Moon*. We're hoping to help Pennsylvania state Senator Daylin Leach win the open seat and beat back Steny Hoyer and his lobbyist brigade, which, predictably, is trying to insert a more conservative and Establishment-friendly candidate into the PA-13 seat (Northeast Philadelphia and Montgomery County). As I've explained before, Daylin and I have something... more »

in which i discover yet another internet scam

laura k at wmtc - 49 minutes ago
Looking for rental houses on Craigslist, I've discovered a scam that I was previously unaware of. I replied to an ad for a place that sounded wonderful, with unusually low rent. I was keeping in mind the old maxim "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," but at the same time, it's only an email. It can't hurt to ask. Everything I wanted to know about the property was answered in the affirmative. Then the supposed owner told me that I should fill out a rental application and, if approved, I could see the place. Hmm. It's been six years since we looked for a place to live... more »

Now that Martin Scorsese has adapted it into the movie "Hugo," I wanted to make sure I read it before seeing the film. *The Invention of Hugo Cabret* is a wonderfully inventive and engaging book. Commentary On Syria And FSA (Fictitious Syrian Army) - A Round-Up of Articles

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 3 hours ago
Here are interesting articles about Syria that caught my eye. *Obama Administration Should Clarify Syria Policy (Al Monitor, July 14)*: Underpinning congressional unease is how unpopular the policy seems to be with Americans. A recent Gallup poll reported that 54% disapprove of providing military aid to the rebels, while a Pew poll revealed 70% oppose such aid. The administration’s difficulty in getting congressional and popular support for its Syria policy might in part be that the decision to aid the rebels has been portrayed as the outcome of an internal administration policy st... more »

What happened to the adage about following the money in coverage of the NSA surveillance revelations?

The Fiction of Maori Ownership

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 4 hours ago
*Guest post by A. Mous.* In “Maori Land Law,” Sir Hugh Kawharu blatantly sets out to fabricate a universally recognised body of Maori property rights pre-dating the Treaty of Waitangi. By implication, these were rudely subsumed by white-settler governments, who substituted their own Eurocentric notions of property ownership. This now widely accepted thesis was explicitly created to fudge or remove the fact that “customary title” is in practical terms no title at all. The functional social unit of pre-European Maori society was the hapu, or sub-tribe. Each hapu was in a Hobbesian ... more »

Hegemonic Warfare Watch: Taiwan in the Pivot

Michael Turton at The View from Taiwan - 13 hours ago
Michael Mazza over at AEI argues that Taiwan has a crucial role in the US "pivot" toward Asia.... Yet Taiwan can take steps to ensure that US forces would have access to the island’s facilities during a time of crisis, even in the absence of a formal access agreement. Taiwan, for example, could invest in infrastructure that would enable the island to serve as a logistics hub for US forces in the event of a conflict to the island’s north or in the South China Sea. Along similar lines, Taiwan might stockpile supplies that would be of use to American forces operating in the region. Doi... more »

Some Thoughts on the Zimmerman Trial

Karen Garcia at Sardonicky - 15 hours ago
I was saddened, but not shocked, by the not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman in the point-blank killing of Trayvon Martin. There is a simple explanation for it: it happened in Florida. George Zimmerman had Florida law on his side. Without the relentless publicity and the pressure brought to bear by national political and media figures, there never would have been a trial in the first place. This was in Florida, where holding such a trial would have been unthinkable even a generation ago. This was in Florida, home of the infamous Groveland Four case, in which a duly sworn sheriff ... more »

But Maloney is good on gay issu... more »
