Tim Maudlin's right and (more often) muddled opinions about physics
Vincent has asked me what I thought about an interview with philosopher of

On the foundations of physics.
Regular TRF readers remember Maudlin as the main villain in the 2011 story
about Tom Banks and anti-quantum zealots which was ignited by a discussion
at Preposterous Universe (well, it was at Cosmic Variance at that time).
Yesterday, Maudlin mostly said the same wrong things as he did 1.5 years

Economic Bizarro World: Persistently High Unemployment And Skyrocketing Bond Yields Are Good?

“The Jesuit scientist/mystic Teilhard de Chardin imagined what he called a
"noosphere" (from the Greek word for "mind") as the next stage of
terrestrial evolution- an envelope of pure human thought embracing the
planet. This would be the inevitable result of human progress on a
spherical Earth of finite surface area. We rub up against each other. We
are stimulated by proximity. Railroads and airplanes extend the range of
our interaction. Better still (he wrote), "thanks to the prodigious

Muslim Brotherhood: Good or bad?
Comparing the reporting of the Egyptian army's killing of pro-Morsi
protesters near the HQ of the Republican Guard yesterday evening showed
that reporters from both the BBC and ITV had a similar take on the course
of the violence.
After Friday prayers, a breakaway group of aggrieved Muslim Brotherhood
marchers arrived at the army headquarters and, in time, began to become
angrier. They were met by a military which started with a speech welcoming
peaceful protest but warning the protesters against coming closer, then
began firing warning shots and tear gas as the crowd grew more a... more »

healthy slow-cooker recipe of the week: sausage and three-bean stew
Whether this recipe qualifies as healthy depends on whether you think
sausage can be part of a healthy diet. I buy sausage that is made from
local, organically raised turkey and free of preservatives. The sausage is
slightly higher in saturated fat than skinless chicken breast, but way
lower in fat than pork sausage. Plus at about a half-sausage per serving,
you're not eating a huge amount of meat.
The sausage adds terrific flavour to the stew, and the combination of beans
and meat make it very thick and hearty. If you can, get loose sausage meat,
not in casings. If you can't, slit... more »

BARF ALERT!!! Conservatives billing themselves as ‘Canada’s founding party’ ...

*When your name is tarnished by a series of scandals and the public starts
viewing you as a bunch of entitled ne’er–do–wells, there’s only one thing
left to do: rebrand yourself!*

We assume Chris Hayes is perfectly bright!
*FRIDAY, JULY 5, 2013*
*That’s why we’re appalled by his conduct:* What did George Zimmerman do
that night, in the dark, without any witnesses watching?
Alone among observers, we’d have to say we don’t know. We can imagine a
very wide range of possibilities.
Others imagine just one.
That said, Chris Hayes said a very odd thing on his cable show Monday
night. Hayes played videotape of Zimmerman explaining what happened. Then,
he offered this:
HAYES (7/1/13): We’re talking of course about Day 6 in the George Zimmerman
trial. That account that George Zimmerman gives there in that ta... more »
Can a law firm accept a retainer to act against a current client on a matter unrelated to the client's existing files? More specifically, can a firm bring a lawsuit against a current client on behalf of another client? If not, what remedies are available

How Jon Stewart Launched the Coup in Egypt
*The recent coup in Egypt may be the first successful peaceful revolution
by way of satire, and if so, an unlikely hero could be Jon Stewart.*
*Activist Post*
American political comedian Jon Stewart appeared on Egyptian television and
less than two weeks later there's a coup. Coincidence?
Last month, appearing with Egyptian political satirist Bassem Youssef,
Stewart said "If your regime is not strong enough to handle a joke, then
you don’t have a regime."
Boy was he proven right! Following massive protests in Egypt, said to be
the largest in human history, the army declared yes... more »
Poll: 71% Say Founding Fathers Would Be 'Disappointed' in Today's America
*Activist Post*
Gallup published a survey today that showed 71% of Americans say the
signers of the Declaration of Independence -- the Founding Fathers -- would
be 'disappointed' in the way the United States turned out.
That is a dramatic increase since the same question was posed in 2001 where
only 54% of respondents said the founders would be disappointed.
Gallup cites the rising anti-government sentiment and lack of confidence in
Congress as possible reasons for the increase:
This is most likely an outgrowth of Americans' current level of negativity
toward their government, ... more »
What climate disruption?
I know these things aren't unprecedented but extreme weather events do seem
to be more severe and happen more frequently as our climate changes.
SANTA ROSA, N.M. -- A massive thunderstorm turned a summer day into a
winter wonderland in Santa Rosa, New Mexico on Wednesday by dropping more
than a foot of hail around town.
The hail, some of which was golf-ball and paint-ball sized, according to a
report from the Guadalupe County Communicator, damaged some roofs and
skylights as it fell non-stop for 20 minutes.

DAZED MEETS CONFUSED: Uncaring, incompetent!
*FRIDAY, JULY 5, 2013*
*Part 4—The AP utterly fails:* For our money, the Washington Post was
basically right about the latest NAEP scores.
According to reporter Lyndsey Layton, the new data “paint a picture of
steady student achievement that contradicts the popular notion that U.S.
educational progress has stalled.”
"When you break out the data over the long term and ask who is improving,
the answer is everyone,” an educational expert was quoted saying. For our
money, Layton pretty much got it right.
Indeed, we would say that Layton *understated* her case in certain ways.

Hello? Budget Senate and Audit Rentals?
G&M : "The Conservative Party of Canada initially planned to repay Senator
Mike Duffy’s improperly-claimed expenses from their taxpayer-subsidized war
chest but balked after learning the debt owed was nearly three times
higher."
Apparently $32,000 in taxpayer and donor war chest funds to whitewash the
audit and shut Duffy up was an ok deal, but $90,000 - not.
Thank goodness for Nigel Wright and his cheque - stepping up just in time
to save the Senate the embarrassment of clawing back Duffy's wages like
they are doing with Brazeau's.

What We Believe to be True - Is Not
I'm still trying to figure out what everyone was celebrating yesterday,
July 4th.
Based on what is happening in the US - the best I can guess is that we were
celebrating our independence from Britain in 1776.
Some kind af archaic birthday celebration?
Maybe we should rename it "Fireworks Day" or "Family Reunion Day"?
Cause today, in the USA, what are we celebrating, really
- the Constitution, as we believed it to be true - is not.
- our representative government, as we believed it to be true - is not.
- the presumption of innocence, as we believed it to be true - is not.

North Carolina Republicans Ramp Up The GOP War Against Women

responded when Laura Leslie, the WRAL Capitol Bureau Chief, asked him point

Are We Really Free When Big Brother Is Systematically Turning America Into A Giant Prison?
Michael Snyder
Every year on July 4th we celebrate our "independence", but is America
really free? How could we possibly be free when "Big Brother" is
constantly intruding in our lives in hundreds of different ways? And I am
not just talking about NSA snooping. Sadly, the truth is that the United
States is beginning to fully embrace a "police state" culture. We have
learned that the government monitors and keeps a record of all of our cell
phone calls, emails, Internet searches, credit card transactions, and every
piece of mail that we send.
But most Americans don't seem to c... more »
The Easiest Way to Measure Shortening
It seems like I am always using shortening. In my homemade frosting, my

me a ton of trouble. *Before *you measure your shortening, place a piece of

cancelled each other out and allowed him to slide to victory. Once
nominated, the election was a formality.

I think it's also a good title for my blog posts about leftist failure
and
irrelevance. I used to get lots of applause for my fire and brimstone

damnation jeremiads but not so much for my constant harping about how
our
tactics on the left are brain-dead and useless.
That having been said, I think there's more value in trying to change my
team with my essays, rather than the enemies' attitudes.
