A Decade of Global Weirding

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 22 minutes ago
The first decade of this millennium was marked by unprecedented climate extremes. That according to a report from the World Meteorological Organization. *The World Meteorological Organization says the planet "experienced unprecedented high-impact climate extremes" in the ten years from 2001 to 2010, the warmest decade since the start of modern measurements in 1850.* *Those ten years also continued an extended period of accelerating global warming, with more national temperature records reported broken than in any previous decade. Sea levels rose about twice as fast as the trend ... more »

Scope of review by certiorari is very limited

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 26 minutes ago
* **Pèse Pêche Inc. v. R*, 2013 NBCA 37 holds: At the outset, it bears noting that the decision whether to grant or refuse a prerogative remedy such as certiorari is ultimately a matter of discretion, exercised by the superior court as part of its general and inherent jurisdiction. Moreover, the scope of review by certiorari is very limited, being conducted "only where it is alleged that [a lower court] has acted in excess of its assigned statutory jurisdiction or has acted in breach of the principles of natural justice which, by the authorities, is taken to be an excess of ju... more »

'Any Answers' - the screening filter

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 33 minutes ago
Many a complainant at sites like *Biased BBC* over the years would allege that programmes like the BBC's *Any Answers *were screening out people who expressed views the BBC didn't like, such as those holding anti-immigration opinions. Well, they weren't wrong - according to Stuart Prebble's report: According to a former producer of *Any Answers?* who worked on the programme ten years ago, people ringing in to the telephonists who act as a first filter for the programme would probably have found that, if they said they wanted to come on air and say immigration was too high or was ... more »

Authoritarianism And The Nature Of Government: Voting Rights In North Carolina, Obama's Persecution Of Ed Snowden

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 34 minutes ago
Governments by nature tend towards the authoritarian. Even when a liberalish type, like Obama, is elected, its almost inevitable that when something like Ed Snowden happens, the government errs on the side of repression. All governments. European governments are either flipping out or feigning flipping out over Snowden's revelations that the U.S. was relentlessly spying on all of our allies all the time. But have any of these any governments agreed to give Snowden political refuse from the American gulag which is looking to devour him? Françoise Hollande, the Socialist president ... more »

Yes, the BBC is biased over gun control

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 45 minutes ago
Here's an extract from today's report from Stuart Prebble that certainly rings true: I believe that many people listening to or watching the BBC in recent months would infer from its coverage that the BBC is in favour of gun control in America. This does not mean that opponents of gun control are not given airtime on the BBC but that, when they are, it seems to me that they are likely to be challenged in a manner which is different from the way that proponents are treated. This happens, I suggest, because of what we could call “an assumed consensus” within which we make editorial ju... more »

Technology, the Grand Blur, Is Ever Harder to Escape

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 51 minutes ago
I'm surrounded by technology and I'll bet you are too. In an arc around me are a wireless printer, a desktop computer, a flat screen monitor, a speaker system, a wireless mouse and keyboard, a high performance modem, a cordless phone, a high output wireless router, a tablet and a smart phone. Damn, but I think they're closing in on me. The paper shredder behind me isn't part of their high-tech gang but it's got blades so I keep one eye on it anyway. In the garage, my motorcycle's engine is computerized. The brakes too. My car speaks to me although it mostly talks back. One... more »

Was the BBC biased? Yes, says an official BBC report

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 51 minutes ago
The BBC's official review into bias has been published. It was carried out by former ITV executive Stuart Prebble and found that the BBC had been out of step with the public on the issue of immigration and Britain's membership of the European Union. The corporation had a fear of causing offence over immigration and had, what former BBC news boss Helen ("Impartiality is in our genes") Boaden described as "a deep liberal bias" over the issue when she came in to the job in 2004. So that's that - and straight from the horse's mouth! With reference to the title of the previous post, ... more »

REMEMBERING HOMER

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 hour ago
While I was away to Sweden our dog Homer was killed by a car in the street in front of our house. We only had Homer for one year but he and I became very close. He was a coon hound and his sniffer worked overtime. He took us all on walks - dragged us actually. He had an amazing internal clock....he knew his eating times and was good at reminding us. About 2:00 pm everyday he would begin working me hard to get away from the computer and take him for a walk. I owe him alot for helping improve my mental health. We got Home-dee from the dog pound. The "credenza defense"

Left I on the News at Left I on the News - 1 hour ago
Back in the days before the invasion of Iraq, George Bush was quoted as saying that he "didn't have plans for invading Iraq on his desk." I quipped, via this blog, that "no, he has them on his credenza" (look it up if you don't know what that is!) and defined the "credenza defense" - something which is "literally true, but fundamentally a lie and meant to deceive the listener." And now we have the classic "credenza defense" from President Barack Obama (a.k.a. Bush III), who just a few days ago (mis)informed the world that he was "not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old... more »

*WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2013* *The New York Times is astounding:* Truly, the New York Times is astounding. The paper defies belief. Its latest collection of howlers concern the Zimmerman trial. They appear in today's news report by Cara Buckley, who replaced Lizette Alvarez on the Zimmerman beat in yesterday’s paper. We should have known it was curtains for Alvarez when we praised her fairness. Yesterday, Buckley flirted with error. Today, though, she goes whole hog. Hmmmm...O'Malley

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 2 hours ago
Alec MacGillis had a piece yesterday talking down Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley as a presidential candidate. He may be right! But...well, let me give you a taste: For all his gym-rat, pub-rock credentials, O’Malley is not a very charismatic politician... In speeches, this lack of dynamism becomes especially noticeable... When attempting to explain a deeper rationale for his policies, O’Malley tends to offer long lists of metrics, or anodyne pronouncements like, “It’s not about whether we move left or right; it’s about whether we move forward or back.” He has a penchant for quot... more »

The Problem Of Institutionalized Corruption In Iraq

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 2 hours ago
Transparency International is a global organization committed to fighting corruption. In April 2013 it released a report looking at the problem in Iraq, and its attempt to deal with it. Like many that have researched the issue, Transparency International did not find a pretty picture. It found that corruption wasn’t just at the bottom where bribes for example are commonplace amongst the police and bureaucrats. The real theft came at the top where all the political parties were involved in skimming money off of contracts, the oil industry, and the budget. It’s for that reason that ... more »

The linkage between earthquakes and apparent resultant volcanic activity has always been inferred and generally accepted. However, today we have a smoking gun to make thing completely certain. The quake and the actual vertical drop in the volcanic chain turn out to be effectively simultaneous. Thus we can be certain that Earthquakes do trigger the pent up subsidence of volcanic buildups as a matter of course and can be predicted. In fact volcano prediction modeling for most can be predicated to triggering quake likelihood. Actual stand alone events are what we know and ... more »

Egyptian Army Gives Mursi 48 Hours

This is startling. The army is signaling both its desire to remain aloof and its desire to seek legitimacy through a united political dispensation and is applying pressure to get that. The army is the anvil that focuses the mind. The authoritarian agendas of the Brotherhood are already thwarted by a natural decline in popularity and the rise of creditable alternative voices. Their foot dragging bluff has been called brilliantly. This will likely force the creation of a working cabinet like body of folks who can cooperate and win support. The case against GMOs is quickly becoming overwhelming and serious pushback is also rapidly building up. It is becoming outright hostile throughout Europe and Russia. As the alternatives are seriously superior to the failing GMO protocol the transition itself will not be too painful unless you are operating a huge industrial scale operation. Yes, huge amounts of capital are surely at risk here. The reason this has happened is pretty clear cut. The science demands long time lines to clarify safety and effectiveness. Ignoring Inconvenient Arctic Data

Like everyone, I was led to believe that the data began in 1979, and now we learn that it was selected in order to demonstrate the maximum possible slope. This is so in the face of sound practice, that the perp. should be tossed out on his butt. The original easily supported a full melt by 2012 which we actually arrived at by which I mean that most multiyear ice had been destroyed. Yet, the strength of the slope did lead me to state publicly that that level would be reached by 2012. I was successful only because we caught a huge fortuitous change in the wind regime in 200... more »

Russel Norman rightly points out that John Key’s expansion of the powers of the GCSB is “part of a global picture of an expanding surveillance state.” What we heard yesterday [at select committee with John Key in the chair doing little more than doodling and keeping time] was about the expansion of the powers of the GCSB. And remember, these people don’t need a warrant from a judge to intercept your communications. They can just intercept them. Does Islam forbid car insurance as the above would suggest? It would be interesting to find out how many (if any) Muslims follow this and don't have car insurance. Evil overlords

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 1 day ago
Of all the uber-wealthy crackpots who bought out our government, two stand out from the rest. It couldn't be clearer. The Koch brothers rule our worldand their apparent mission is to destroy our planet, and civil society, for their personal profit. The House of Representatives voted to slash the EPA budget by 27 percent, one of the biggest cuts since President Richard Nixon and the Congress created the agency in 1970. The Senate subsequently modified the severity of these cuts, and the budget was ultimately cut by nearly 16 percent. What is less known is that more than 100 House mem... more »

The Federal Reserve Is Paying Banks NOT To Lend 1.8 Trillion Dollars To The American People

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 1 day ago
Michael Snyder Did you know that U.S. banks have more than 1.8 trillion dollars parked at the Federal Reserve and that the Fed is actually *paying them* not to lend that money to us? We were always told that the goal of quantitative easing was to "help the economy", but the truth is that the vast majority of the money that the Fed has created through quantitative easing has not even gotten into the system. Instead, most of it is sitting at the Fed slowly earning interest for the bankers. Back in October 2008, just as the last financial crisis was starting, Federal Reserve Chairm... more »

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 1 day ago
Sara Burrows The 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals June 27 reversed a trial judge’s decision to dismiss Charlotte-area “paleo diet” blogger Steve Cooksey’s free speech case. In October, a U.S. District Court judge in Charlotte threw out Cooksey’s lawsuit, which claimed the North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition had violated his freedom of speech by censoring his blog about his Paleolithic or “caveman” diet. The board went through 19 pages of Cooksey’s website with a red pen, marking out what he could and couldn’t say about his diet. Specifically, the board’s director told C... more »

We were told they are here to fight terrorism???? I guess they forgot..... Enter your email address to subscribe to our newsletter: Delivered by FeedBurner Be the Change! Codex Alimentarius Permits a Wide Range of Dangerous Chemicals in Food

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 1 day ago
image source Brandon Turbeville In my past few articles, I have discussed the documented adverse health effects related to pesticide use [1], the difference between general pesticides and POPs [2] (Persistent Organic Pollutants), and the requirements that must be met [3] in order for the designation of POP to be applied to a specific pesticide. With all of this in mind, one may be surprised that Codex Alimentarius actually allows for the presence of such dangerous chemicals in food. Before explaining this position, however, it is important to note some of the background regardin... more »
