healthy slow-cooker recipe of the week: sausage and three-bean stew
Whether this recipe qualifies as healthy depends on whether you think
sausage can be part of a healthy diet. I buy sausage that is made from
local, organically raised turkey and free of preservatives. The sausage is
slightly higher in saturated fat than skinless chicken breast, but way
lower in fat than pork sausage. Plus at about a half-sausage per serving,
you're not eating a huge amount of meat.
The sausage adds terrific flavour to the stew, and the combination of beans
and meat make it very thick and hearty. If you can, get loose sausage meat,
not in casings. If you can't, slit... more »

Alone among observers, we’d have to say we don’t know. We can imagine a

That said, Chris Hayes said a very odd thing on his cable show Monday

How Jon Stewart Launched the Coup in Egypt
*The recent coup in Egypt may be the first successful peaceful revolution
by way of satire, and if so, an unlikely hero could be Jon Stewart.*
*Activist Post*
American political comedian Jon Stewart appeared on Egyptian television and
less than two weeks later there's a coup. Coincidence?
Last month, appearing with Egyptian political satirist Bassem Youssef,
Stewart said "If your regime is not strong enough to handle a joke, then
you don’t have a regime."
Boy was he proven right! Following massive protests in Egypt, said to be
the largest in human history, the army declared yes... more »
Poll: 71% Say Founding Fathers Would Be 'Disappointed' in Today's America
*Activist Post*
Gallup published a survey today that showed 71% of Americans say the
signers of the Declaration of Independence -- the Founding Fathers -- would
be 'disappointed' in the way the United States turned out.
That is a dramatic increase since the same question was posed in 2001 where
only 54% of respondents said the founders would be disappointed.
Gallup cites the rising anti-government sentiment and lack of confidence in
Congress as possible reasons for the increase:
This is most likely an outgrowth of Americans' current level of negativity

"When you break out the data over the long term and ask who is improving,
the answer is everyone,” an educational expert was quoted saying. For our

What We Believe to be True - Is Not
I'm still trying to figure out what everyone was celebrating yesterday,

Based on what is happening in the US - the best I can guess is that we were

Middle Eastern democracy, in pictures
It’s not true just for Egypt. It’s true for *every* Islamic nation …
(Click the pic to enlarge)
which is why it’s best never to confuse democracy with freedom.

Kiriakou Warns Snowden from Prison, Morsi Out In Coup, and Washington Driving The World To The Final War? (One More Anyway - It's All About the Money, Folks) Happy 4th of July!
And we thought the FBI were the good guys. Among all the bad guys who work
for us. DO NOT, under any circumstances, cooperate with the FBI. FBI agents
will lie, trick, and deceive you. They will twist your words and play on
your patriotism to entrap you. They will pretend to be people they are not
– supporters, well-wishers, and friends – all the while wearing wires to

People-Powered Coup Is No Setback For Democracy In Egypt
*Source of photo*.
The word democracy has been thrown around a lot in relation to the recent
explosive events in Egypt. Countries such as Germany have *said* that the
removal of President Morsi via military force and massive public protests
is a "setback for democracy."
First of all, Germany and any nation that is part of the dictatorial
European Union has no right to speak for democracy since they don't
practice it themselves. Get off your high horses, jackasses, and look at
reality on the ground in Egypt with open eyes. Democracy does not belong on
a pedestal. If the fruit of ... more »

Scurvy returns among UK children with diets'worse than in the war’ ...
*With the advent of junk food as well as highly processed microwave food,
the corporate world is slowing enticing huge numbers of people into highly
dangerous eating / diet practices.*
*Wartime diseases are returning to Britain because some children are
living on junk food diets that are worse for them than rationing was 70
years ago, officials have claimed. *

**Cases of scurvy and rickets have been on the rise in parts of the UK
where some parents rely on takeaways and microwave meals to feed the
family, health staff warned. *

Eradicating Not Expanding Bad Ed. Policy
” For those who support high-stakes testing and the Common Core, how about
we mandate that ALL schools, public, private, or charter use these
policies?” (Chris Cerrone) First, why would we want to mandate such
garbage for all schools? We must preserve those places which are not a
part of the corporatization of schools. Public […]
China's Green Goo
29 thousand square kilometres of coastal green goo is a lot, even for
China. That is the size of the algae bloom now blanketing China's Yellow
Sea coastline. Here's a Chinese beachgoer wading through the stuff.
*Pictures on Thursday showed beachgoers swimming and playing in the green
tide in the eastern city of Qingdao, while bulldozers shovelled up tonnes
of algae from the sand.*

*The State Oceanic Administration said on its website the algae,
enteromorpha prolifera, started to appear a week ago and had spread across
an area of 28,900 square kilometres.*

Lighten up Francis
Well, it *is* the holiday and by now you're all probably about drinking all
the beers and eating all the barbecue, so here's a mild amusement to
lighten the mood. . Ted Cruz sings Amazing Grace to the tune of Gilligans's
Island. Surprisingly the lyrics really do fit.

Did You Think Buck McKeon Only Hates Gays? He Also Hates Latinos
A few days ago we mentioned the 26 districts in Republican hands that have
at least 25% Hispanic populations. The district with the 9th biggest
Hispanic population is CA-25, Buck McKeon's district. Last year Democrat
Lee Rogers won the heavily Hispanic third of the district in the Antelope
Valley. With 38% of his constituents being Hispanic, maybe McKeon should be
a little more respectful. The DCCC compiled a list recent comments and
actions from the bigoted McKeon, Happy 4th of July:
McKeon: “I Do Not Support Amnesty For Those That Entered the Country
Illegally.” In 2013, on his... more »

Sweet land of liberty
Not every day you see a claim for Third Amendment violations in a police
misconduct suit. Well deserved in this case against the City of Henderson,
Nevada's finest. You have to read it all to appreciate the full scope of
this intentional breach of civil rights but here's some highlights:
The complaint continues: "Defendant Officer David Cawthorn outlined the
defendants' plan in his official report: 'It was determined to move to 367
Evening Side and attempt to contact Mitchell. If Mitchell answered the door
he would be asked to leave. If he refused to leave he would be arrested for... more »

How I killed newspapers, Part Two
OK, I didn’t really kill newspapers.
But my career began when newspapers were doing extraordinarily well, and
continued as they did less and less well. For much of the time, I was in
newspaper management. So I’m hardly blameless.
Looking back, it’s amazing how many mistakes we made.
In my early days at The Red Deer Advocate, we published two 96-page
newspapers in the run-up to Christmas. Advertisers needed to use the paper,
and we benefited. (The paper made lots of money, circulation was increasing
and we were adding newsroom staff every year.)
A chunk of that advertising was from big... more »
Unite and Falkirk, Again
Who needs to talk about Egypt* when the fallout from the Falkirk stitch
uphas cast light on the shoddy state of Labour's selection process, and
brought
down Tom Watson? It's like the Blairites' christmases have all come at
once. Shadow ministers closely linked with the *ancien regime* have been
popping
up and down stirring the pot. Unite have been forced into the untenable
position of saying their grossly incompetent fix was within the rules,
and
the party has announced the 'Union Join' membership scheme is getting
binned.
Indeed, not a few champagne glasses will find themselves rais... more »

Happy Fourth of July!
Happy Independence Day!
The latest version of my Fourth of July essay is over at PostPartisan: "A
nation defined by politics." As regulars know, I write on the same theme
every year on the Fourth.
And that's all from me for this Fourth. Plain Blog HQ moved over the
weekend, and I'm spending most of the day trying to get things in order
(the toaster must be somewhere, right? Right?). The good news is that most
of my baseball books are in their customary place right in front of
me...the Giants Media Guides, at least, although the Abstracts are still
boxed somewhere, but I can see Cur... more »
