Head of Newsroom tells BBC staff: "Don't do anything stupid!"
This is now... The upshot of DB's latest fine work in highlighting bias at the BBC through the tweets of BBC journalist - the Jasmine Lawrence affair, taken up by Guido Fawkes, the *Daily Mail *and the* Huff Post *- is that the Head of the BBC Newsroom, Mary Hockaday, has now sent an e-mail to BBC staff warning them "Don't do anything stupid!" on social media. The *Guardian* quotes her saying the following: Social media is now a vital part of our work, allowing us to get our journalism to new audiences, connect with people, and gather news as it happens. But the guidance is clear ... more »

“To the Class of 2014: Congratulations Chumps!”
*“To the Class of 2014: Congratulations Chumps!”* by Bill Bonner “There are 4,495 colleges and universities in the US. By our count, they reckoned there were at least 4,495 commencement speakers more suitable than your editor. Not one asked us to give the graduation address. That was probably a good decision on their part. Nevertheless, we prepared an address we would have delivered had we been asked. The Rich Are So Afraid of Piketty's Book That They're Sounding the Alarm About their Fear of a New American Revolution Against Them (The HORROR!)
People in America are under attack daily. The greedy rich know it, because they are the ones doing the attacking. They know that they have made collateral damage out of hungry children, hard-working parents, grandmother and grandfathers. And somewhere behind the gates of their private communities and the roped-off areas — their private schools, private hospitals, private modes of transport
The Art of Creation
We are creative artists. Creation is what we do. The video shared here uses this brilliant description of the process: "...(it) patiently refuses to observe any of these casualties, while at its heart, it continues to sing: "*Let there be light!*" The miracle of creation is held in this knowing - *that only what is intended will ever be the outcome. * This time we share now is one of collecting and utilizing the truths and tools of the creative process. This video offers a nice summary: On Friday, May 23, 2014, Artist and Producer Katy Walker will be interviewed on the Doubl... more »
OUR PROGRAM IS HARMONY
I'm still smarting after the turn down I got from the Maine Army National Guard not allowing me into the Arctic ice melting jamboree they had in Bangor earlier this week. Mr. Big was gathering to say their devious blessings over "new gifts" from the very Earth they so despise. I've often wondered if Mr. Big was from another galaxy and just landed here by accident, or had intentionally come here to mine the hell out of us. We are all the worker bees. But things got out-of-hand and now there are too many of us and the oli-i-garchy is trying to thin the herd. Wars, plagues, fami... more »

TRUTHOUT: Stepping Forward or Chaining Oneself for Justice
Last semester, the husband of one of my students was deported to Mexico. To see that battle ensue during the school year was not pleasant. I accompanied her to see lawyers that might help, yet in the end, all said he had no chance. He was deported and despite this, this semester, she graduated with honors. Also, the previous semester, Cynthia Diaz, another one of my students, waged a very public battle to bring her mom back home after seeing her mother deported from their house in Phoenix some three years ago. Her public battle, which included a 6-day fast this semester in front o... more »
WIll Mark Foley Run For Congress Again?
Maybe Fox was just prescient-- instead of stupid or partisan When Mark Foley was forced to resign, in the midst of a shocking sex scandal just before the 2006 election, no one would have imagined he would ever run for office again-- no, one that is, except for people who know Mark Foley. He needed some time off. There were even rumors that he was begging the Republican House leadership to let him retire before well-placed leaks from Rahm Emanuel tanked his career and-- many say-- Republican chances in the 2006 midterms. Today, Foley is a political consultant and... a lobbyist-- somet... more »

Meat Prices Skyrocket: Is Soylent Green on the Horizon?
The crushing economic destruction of the American people is to borrow one of those great Orwellian terms from the oligarchy's media shills "picking up steam". Food prices, in particular meat prices are currently exploding into the stratosphere in inverse proportion to the purchasing power of American wage slaves who continue to be sucked dry by the corrupt government, the permanent war machine and the ongoing subsidizing of Wall Street casinos. It is a long holiday weekend and the traditional BBQ's that will take place will likely feature more cheap hamburger cut with pink slime a... more »

Having a Soul or Been the Soul
Thank you for sharing this. I will share my thoughts so far. As you can imagine and we are really moving quickly here, this is an inquiry in progress and I have already found myself adjusting positions. So by no means will this be a final position. First it is necessary to understand the underlying meta mathematics of our physical universe that includes a sixth operator which we see expressed as consciousness and by inference as soul, as spirit and as angel and as the super mind as well. The easiest way to tackle this is through the five operators of Boolian Algebra which omi... more »

Bacteria That Produces Pure Gold
There had been speculation that this did happen in nature. There is far too much fine gold in existence in just that form when the processes considered did not seem appropriate in terms of the actual distribution observed. There still needs to be a geological source for the gold but liberating it uniquely is clearly important as the other material is then largely left behind. This may also explain why gold appears to be missing in some mineral suites. *Researchers Discover Bacteria That Produces Pure Gold* *Jesus Diaz* *http://gizmodo.com/5948739/researchers-discover-bacter... more »
King David's Legendary Citadel
More critical is that the citadel was built using five ton blocks which conform to our expectations for an important city during the Bronze Age which was in serious collapse post 1159 BC or just preceding the reign of King David. Thus we find David taking over a diminished world still retaining robust infrastructure. The remaining remnants of that world are the living background of this pre exile polity of the Jewish people. Our error has been to habitually underestimate the scope and size of that remnant culture, although the scale of the philistine presence should have tippe... more »

That figure fell to 6.4 percent during the 1990s and 4.4 percent during former president Chen Shui-bian’s (陳水扁) two terms. A major reason for this slowdown has been declining investment in Taiwan. Is Shinseki Fired Yet? How About Congress?
I can't see any way for Obama to keep Eric Shinseki on as Secretary of Veterans Affairs. No matter how good a job he did fighting in Vietnam or commanding in Bosnia or as Army Chief of Staff, he screwed up royally as Secretary of Veterans Affairs. At least 40 veterans have died while waiting to see V.A. doctors. That's not what Americans expect from the Veterans Administration and Shinseki should resign at once or be fired by Obama. Here Paul Craig Roberts shows us that Americas wars have never been to protect us from foreign powers and that the main results of these wars have been millions of dead civilians and thousands of new American millionaires and billionaires. Finally he remarks that with about 17,300 nuclear weapons deployed in at least 9 countries it would take only "one fool – and Washington has thousands of fools – and all life on earth terminates in 45 minutes."

David Autor on Inequality
From a recent interview of the MIT economist (discussing this article): *Q*. You are focused on inequality among the so-called “99 percent,” not between the 1 percent and the 99 percent. Why? *A.* There’s a real national debate about the significance and causes of inequality. This public debate is dominated by the discussion of the top 1 percent. And the top 1 percent is important, but focusing on the top 1 percent conveys the message that the game is all rigged, that if you’re not in the elite stratum, there’s nothing to shoot for. And that’s just not the case. The growth of skill ... more »

Improving Econ 101
Noah Smith says introductory economics needs to be more empirical. Economists usually do empirical work with statistical tools that most college freshmen have not yet learned. We teachers of introductory economics can and should explain where and why economists disagree. That is part of helping students develop their critical thinking skills. But I doubt students are in a position to try to evaluate the competing empirical work that shapes the ... more »

With a length of about 17 meters and an 11.5m wingspan, the J-31 is about the size of the F-35 Lightning II and smaller than the F-22, J-20 and PAK-FA. A large model of the J-31, designated as "F-60", appeared at the Zhuhai 2012 Airshow, indicating a Chinese willingness to export the J-31 as a interna... more »
Mast fitted to tallest warship
[image: HMS Queen Elizabeth mast]The mast has been fitted on the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, making it Britain's tallest warship. From the tip of the newly-installed pole mast to the keel, the carrier now stands 73 metres (239ft) tall - taller than Tower Bridge or Nelson's Column. With a draught of 10 metres (33ft) it means the aircraft carrier - due to be officially named by the Queen at Rosyth, Scotland, on July 4 - will stand 63 metres (206ft) above the waterline. Read more

Ukraine Descends Into Chaos Ahead of Sham Elections
*Image: Armored vehicle operating in Lugansk, eastern Ukraine.. * *May 23, 2014* (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - The regime in Ukraine is rushing forward with elections, supposedly to take place on May 25, even as much of the country descends into chaos. With Crimea now part of Russia, and two more provinces declared autonomous after recent referendums - with more provinces to follow - Kiev has responded with a campaign that resembles more of a foreign invasion and occupation than a national security operation. With its regular army in shambles, Kiev has turned to a patchwork of militia... more »
Death of all Gods
- We are Flesh & Blood & Bone. - We Dream. - We inhabit this (*quite small*) rock in space. The Pagan (*or so-called Nature*) Gods were a hardy bunch, surviving even in Canaan Judaism as FERTILITY GODESS statuettes in the form of Mother + Child. But they ALL DIED (or were subsumed) into the Monolith, the Onesong, the Tone. "You will buy more shit," it shines like a blinding beacon in a profit-storm of war-machines. Higgs contest, top ten
As you may have noticed (by looking at my reduced activity on this blog), I have spent hours with the ATLAS Higgs contest in recent two days. It's time to boast a little bit. Here is the screenshot of the current leaderboard: *Click to zoom in.* You see that there's someone new in the top-ten list, someone who jumped up by 179 stairs in recent two days. And his name is the same as mine! ;-) Finally, I could apply some idiosyncratic improvements to the data manipulation. To compare, Tommaso Dorigo of CMS is at the 116th place. Maybe he should try to learn some string theory if he'... more »

Lockheed, Austal respond to U.S. Navy query on small-warship ideas

The Navy last month asked U.S. and foreign weapons makers to submit cost and technical data on ship designs and weapons to inform the work of the task force that is due to report on various options by July 31. That, in turn, will help the Navy shape its fiscal 2016 budget request. The Navy created the task force afte... more »
Quantum technology to help submarines find their way
[image: USS Chicago]British scientists have developed technology that could allow submarines to determine their exact location without needing to surface. Researchers at Imperial College London are working on a portable “quantum” accelerometer, which they claim would be far more accurate than current technology, by engineering smaller and better-controlled lasers. This could allow accelerometers to help map the exact movements of a submarine or other vehicle as it moves around the globe, enabling the crew to determine their current position with an error range of just 1m. America Is Finished: The Slow And Humiliating Death Of The US Dollar
I have been reading the startling reports over the last while of China and Russia's agreement to end their international trade using the US Dollar and instead use their own currencies for trade and commerce... And it seems that other BRICS nations will follow the Russian/Chinese lead and do all of their trading in currencies other than the US dollar as well. This is an unmitigated disaster for the United States and could indeed spell the end of the US dollar as the world's one and only international trading currency since the days of the Bretton Woods agreements of 1944. How bad is... more »

Review - Zabada
When Zabada asked me to review some of their products, I was intrigued. Why? Because, their invitation included a video which shows customers how to use their bathroom cleaning system. Now, I'm familiar with microfibers and I'm VERY familiar with cleaning. So I was curious about just what made this cleaning system so unique that customers might benefit from a "how to" video. So, yeah ... the glove is a unique design over the more common flat versions. But after watching the video, I was even more fascinated by their claim that the bathroom glove wouldn't transfer dirt ... even g... more »

MOYERS DENOUNCES OBAMA
Bill Moyers criticized President Barack Obama for his decision to seemingly leave the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the hands of the anti-net neutrality forces he opposed as a candidate. “They believed he would keep his word, would see to it that when private interests set upon the Internet like sharks to blood in the water, its fate would be in the hands of honest brokers who would listen politely to the pleas of the greedy, and then show them the door,” Moyers said of the supporters Obama won when he promised to keep the internet free from corporate influence. “Unfo... more »
Texts in Transition
The mid-thirteenth century saw something rarely known in the annals of the conquerors and the conquered: the re-emergence of written texts in English from amidst a people still ruled by Norman French-speaking aristocrats. Perhaps the rulers were too few in number, or too many had, generations before, taken Saxon wives and raised their children in bilingual households. And yet the English which emerged was not quite the same as the one which had disappeared: it had lost most of its inflectional endings, all noun cases except the genitive, and many of its verb tenses. Instead of ch... more »

That power belongs to no one else. In particular, it doesn’t belong to the State. The State will try, will always try to suggest that it is granting power to the individual, but this is a lie. "An Exquisite Balance..."
“It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas… If you are only skeptical, then no new ideas make it through to you… On the other hand, if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense in you, then you cannot distinguish the useful ideas from the worthless ones.” - Carl Sagan
The Poet: Mary Oliver, "Wild Geese"
*“Wild Geese”* "You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagi... more »
“Dark Night of the Soul: Surrendering the Ego”
*“Dark Night of the Soul: Surrendering the Ego”* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "While we are in a dark night of the soul experience, hold steady knowing the light will appear once again. Whenever a word is overused, it is most likely being misused, and over time, it begins to lose its meaningfulness. For example, we often refer to a fleeting feeling of depression or a period of confusion, as a dark night of the soul, but neither of these things qualifies as such. A dark night of the soul is a very specific experience that some people encounter on their spiritual journeys. There are... more »
Morality and Postmodernism
Postmodernism is a belief in the subjectivity of existence; a post-human condition; and a context-based empirical, as opposed to ideological, approach to the social and moral issues. To assert that the Western culture is superior to all other cultures is simplistic and reductive. There is no existing standard to judge the advancement of a culture. The visible Western progress is primarily a scientific-technological progress and that too only in the domain of the physical sciences. On the basis of technological advancement, can it be said that the West is also intellectually superior... more »
Musical Interlude: Josh Groban, “Gira Con Me”
Josh Groban, “Gira Con Me” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bYD38yomIw ◆ English Lyrics: *"Gira Con Me Questa Notte"* *"Turn With Me Tonight"* "The world turns with me tonight. Small steps that I make with you. I follow your heart, and I follow the moon So hidden far from me. The world turns with us tonight, Ah, if only far from here there existed A place where to discover my heart, To know if it can love you or not. And it will turn, and it will turn, My heart together with you, And the earth will turn, And my life will turn, And one day, yes, it will understand. It's you who turns ... more »
Free Download: Dante Alighieri, “The Divine Comedy”
*Free Download: **Dante Alighieri, “The Divine Comedy”* “The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia) is an epic poem written by Dante Alighieri between c. 1308 and his death in 1321. It is widely considered the pre-eminent work of Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative and allegorical vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan dialect, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. I... more »

Congressional Progressive Caucus Endorses Stanley Chang
Last year, Honolulu City Councilman Stanley Chang wrote a guest post for us explaining why he wants to join the Congressional Progressive Caucus. This week, in their first round of 2014 endorsements, the CPC endorsed Chang, who's in a crowded 9-way August 9th primary for the seat New Dem Colleen Hanabusa is giving up. Stanley's opponents are, first and foremost transactional careerists rather than principled, values-driven leaders. Last week, we took a closer look at nominal front-runner state Senator Donna Mercado Kim, a corporate-oriented conservative from the Republican wing of...more »

“Spying Is Meant to Crush Citizens’ Dissent, Not Catch Terrorists”
*“Spying Is Meant to Crush Citizens’ Dissent, Not Catch Terrorists”* The Big Secret Behind the Spying Program by WashingtonsBlog “While many Americans understand why the NSA is conducting mass surveillance of U.S. citizens, some are still confused about what’s really going on. In his new book, "No Place to Hide", Glenn Greenwald writes: "The perception that invasive surveillance is confined only to a marginalised and deserving group of those “doing wrong” – the bad people – ensures that the majority acquiesces to the abuse of power or even cheers it on. But that view radically misu...more »

We Can't Get Piketty? (They Wish) We Do Get the Geithner Buy-My-Book Glibberties
Did you catch Tim Geithner's comedy act last night on Stephen Colbert? (Sorry that there's no link yet to be posted - I'll post it when it becomes available later.) It was quite a triumph. Colbert was speechless at the end. You'd have been too if you'd bought any of Geithner's glibness with what seemed to be either Colbert's star struckness (or dumbstruckness). When I was in graduate school
