In yesterday's installment, we linked you to photos of black and white kids together in the Tuscaloosa schools (city and surrounding county). We think those photos are pleasing. We’re glad those Alabama kids are getting that kind of experience. We’re grateful to the many people who are making those schools function. And of course, we believe in those kids. Fake "Moderate" Republicans Like Susan Collins Defeated The Minimum Wage Increase-- What Next?

The vote yesterday to shut down the Republican Party filibuster of the minimum wage bill ended badly, 54 in favor, 41 opposed (not counting Harry Reid who had to switch his vote to oppose so he can bring the bill up again later). It needed 60 votes to overcome the filibuster. Five votes shy. The only Republican to cross the aisle and vote with the Democrats was Bob Corker of Tennessee, meaning Susan Collins (R-ME), Mark Kirk (R-IL), Dean Heller (R-NV), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Rob Portman (R-OH) weren't in the moderate mood yesterday or are perhaps never in the moderate mood on ... more »

BBC Watch has posted a series of articles forensically deconstructing Jeremy Bowen’s recent series of reports about the expiration of the Middle East ‘peace deadline’, Mahmoud Abbas’s joint venture with Hamas and John Kerry’s clumsy remarks about Israel and apartheid. The latest post reveals some relevant background (which Bowen’s reporting conceals) surrounding the ‘man-in-a-cave’ broadcast, in which a Palestinian man is presented to us as a helpless victim of Israeli racism, when in fact Khaled al-Zeer is a known agitator with a criminal record. The EU's 20 absurdities: a poll

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 hour ago
Around May 24th, the citizens of EU countries will vote deputies to the European Parliament. This "parliament" isn't terribly important – for example, it is not allowed to propose any legislation (it is the only "parliament" in the world with this minor defect) but we may still think that it's important that the right people will be able to speak on that forum. Various parties opposing the creeping European unifications are expected to make a strong showing. UKIP, Politics and Populism That hundreds and hundreds and hundreds flock to read stuff about the SWP never ceases to amaze me. Happy May Day 2014

Stranger in a Strange Land at Stranger in a Strange Land - 13 hours ago
May Day. Also known as Labour Day. In many countries, May Day is also Labor Day. This originates with the United States labor movement in the late 19th Century. On May 1, 1886, unions across the country went on strike, demanding that the standard workday be shortened to eight hours. The organizers of these strikes included socialists, anarchists, and others in organized labor movements. Rioting in Chicago's Haymarket Square on May 4th including a bomb thrown by an anarchist led to the deaths of a dozen people (including several police officers) and the injury of over 100 more. ... more »

Turkey's Whirling Dervishes - Why did modern dance lose its spin?

Mike Philbin at FREE PLANET BLOG - 13 hours ago
everything in this universe spins, or has spin, and I was wondering when the act of dancing lost its spin factor. Look at kids when they do the happy dance, what do they do? Spin, on the spot or in groups. Spinning (and laughing) is a natural part of what Nature is. But apart from the recent break-dancing (back-spinning craze), these days, dancing is a one-plane stepping ritual, usually guarding a hand bag on the dance floor. You move from one side to the other, stepping with your left foot, then stepping with your right foot. Sometimes there's a flip, a hand clap or a turn. Bu... more »

Push for Growler jets points to military growth despite spending cap

[image: EA-18G Growler]It wasn't looking good for the Growlers. The Boeing-made fighter jets, used to jam enemy radar, were left out of the Pentagon's budget for next year. And with spending strictly limited by a budget cap, the plane seemed headed for extinction. But in reality, the Growlers aren't dead yet. Like dozens of other programs, the EA-18G Airborne Electric Attack Aircraft, as they're officially known, have ended up on something called the "unfunded priorities list," an inventory of what the Pentagon would like to buy if it had several extra billion dollars to spend. Steyn on Sterling on the Right to Be a Bigot in Your Own Home

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 23 hours ago
No doubt you’ve heard about the owner of the LA Clippers basketball team, who’s had his wings clipped by the NBA’s Commissioner and his team stripped from him for being “recorded saying that he didn’t want black people at his basketball games.” Mark Steyn wonders (writing under the best headline of the whole schmeer) if that’s the whole story. And why it’s really news. Russia has seized the Crimea, China is threatening to seize Japanese islands, Iran is going nuclear, and, at President Obama's Sunday press conference on his Asian tour, the accompanying reporters took time out fro... more »

Tony Blair on Terrorism

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 23 hours ago
A good conversation, here, over the weekend, on fighting an ideology. *Meet the Press* Sunday, host David Gregory suggested to former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair that the US, Britain and others made a mistake when they went after Saddam Hussein, which Gregory said only led to more terrorism. Watch Blair’s response. It makes you wonder whether his incredible unpopularity might just be because he still has the ability to concisely state uncomfortable truths. Canada takes over military leadership of military OSCE mission- Poland

Military is being stressed for the simple fact the NATO media lied about what the OSCE observers were really about... Canada is stepping into the increasingly tense showdown between Kyiv and Moscow over the future of eastern Ukraine by taking over leadership of an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s* military observer mission* in the central European country. The Dirt on Bob Behning’s Reelection Money

In fact, the Hoosiers for Economic Growth PAC, founded by an Amway/Besty Devos/Walmart/Overstock.com/hedge fund front group, just gave Behning $45,000, two days ago. Hoosiers for Economic Growth slid him $25,000 at the beginning of this month, too (page 4). Back in 2013, the super PAC handed Behning $2,000 (page 5). 'American and European aid money has bought brand new SUV's for PA officialdom, the best in (with cheap labor) construction and luxuries, but nothing has changed for the Palestinian refugees, who are being kept in deliberate misery by their fellow Palestinians. Yet, western (American and European) charity is meant to ameliorate the condition of the refugees. Instead, the camps are administered by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, better known as UNRWA, whose primary aim is self-perpetuation of the camp bureaucracy, paid for primarily by the West. Gerry Adams Questioned By Police Over Murder

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
It's fascinating how stories 'break'. Sky News is just reporting *Gerry Adams Questioned By Police Over Murder*. BBC News beat them to it by about five minutes, with *Adams held over McConville murder*. Yet, between the BBC's very brief first take and their sketchy second take, the* Daily Mail* had published a very detailed article *Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams arrested over murder of widowed mother abducted from her home in 1972*, providing the full background to the story. We're only a few minutes in but the much-derided *Daily Mail *is leading the way.

The question arose as we discussed a publishing sensation: Thomas Piketty's “Capital in the Twenty-First Century.” As you will recall, the book – all 700 pages – was recently number one on the Amazon.com bestseller list. "Withering test prep regimens" Continue in New York Despite New Law

With absolute fealty to Wall Street and the vulture philanthropists who pay for the Governor's allegiance to New York's 21st Century segregated cultural sterilization testing camps, Cuomo dares not touch the urban sprawl of charter school programs for the poor, which are based, of course, on round the clock test prep.
