*“The Commencement Address Nobody Wants to Hear” * by Bill Bonner “Yesterday was Memorial Day in the US. We used this quiet interlude to continue the commencement address nobody wants to hear. You are heirs to a great society, a great economy, a great government... and more snaky illusions than you can shake a stick at. Memorial Day gave us an opportunity to salute the fallen. Without a moment's hesitation or thought (which is the only way to do it) those who protect us rush to the barricades or recruiting offices. Germans, French, Vietnamese... WHY NO AUDIT AT THE PENTAGON?

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 9 minutes ago
There are fresh calls in Washington for the Pentagon to come clean about how it has been spending trillions of taxpayer dollars. The Department of Defense has not audited a single budget in more than 20 years, despite demands from Congress. Let some meager misappropriation happen in a social program anywhere in the US and the media and Congress go into a rip-snort and demand an immediate audit and even defunding of the agency. But the saintly military industrial complex, by handing over large sums of campaign cash to politicians (money which largely comes from the taxpayer), is ... more »

Central Office Administrator Admits: "it is almost impossible to get a charter school like KIPP closed"

Posted at Memphis Schools Matter: Since I was recently denied visitation to any of the KIPP schools in Memphis, I have considered a number of strategies that may help get me access. Today I talked with a very nice individual at Central Offices of Shelby County Schools (SCS). Why the BBC Loves UKIP

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 2 hours ago
All that was missing from the BBC's coverage of the local and European election results was Nick Robinson giving Nigel Farage a wet, sloppy congratulations kiss. Seldom have the BBC elections team been more starstruck, more craven in its uncritical promotion of a political party. Is it yet another instantiation of a putative BBC bias? Maybe. Sure, there is an overall tendency to go soft on the government of the day. Since 2003's "dodgy dossier" and the fall out of the Gilligan/Kelly affair, the BBC have self-interestedly tiptoed around those who have the power to scrap or change it... more »

I just received from a friend, a Joint Statement made today on how to improve EPIRA implementation. Many of these points are practical, some are technical. The call by many populist and left-leaning groups to "junk" or "amend towards greater government role" EPIRA is wrong. ------ Amending or making changes in the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) or the Republic Act No. 9136 will not solve the problems because EPIRA is not the problem, failure to implement it properly is. We refer to the “achievement gaps” which help define the state of America’s public schools. At a glance, you might not see that Porter was avoiding some of those gaps. As he started his column, Porter stressed a familiar old theme—the alleged failure of American schools as compared to those in the rest of the developed world. Why we have political parties and what that means

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 7 hours ago
Parliamentary democracy works on the basis that voters choose the type of government they want through proxies. Specifically, a conservative voter might like Stephen Harper as Prime Minister but that voter cannot (unless they live in Mr Harper's riding) vote for him - the voter has to vote for someone else who supports Mr Harper. Similarly someone who likes Mr Harper's policies on, say, crime cannot vote directly on the issue but must vote for a member of Mr. Harper's party in the expectation that member will vote accordingly. That means, of course, that some of the freedom an ind... more »

How Does Civil Society Influence the State

Right. So, bourgeois democracy is a crock of shit. It's a fool's errand that only the dull and the deluded participate in. What's more important than the state is civil society. On its side, the state has the police, the surveillance, the courts, the prisons. The money supply. On our side, we don't have the law. [image: F-35 Lightning II & F-18 Hornet]The Canadian companies that are participating in the F-35 fighter jet program are urging the federal government to bypass a competition and return to its original plan to sole-source the purchase of the U.S.-based Lockheed-Martin aircraft. “Using a competition to simply delay making a decision is costly, unnecessary and not in the interests of Canadian taxpayers or Canadian industry. That is bad management, bad policy and bad for business,” the industry group made up of 35 Canadian firms said in an open letter. But other voices are rising, arg... more »

Ukraine: A military-industrial complex to die for

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 13 hours ago
[image: SS-18 Satan]It seems that one of the most important dimensions of Russia's fixation on Ukraine is one little discussed in the mainstream media. That dimension, namely the importance to Moscow of Ukraine's surprisingly well developed military industrial complex, is a key reason Russian President Vladimir Putin won't let go of Ukraine. Moreover, the bulk of Ukraine's military industrial complex is in Ukraine's south and east, which adds clarity to Russia's focus on those parts of Ukraine. Read more

President Benigno Aquino will attend as part of his government's visible push to try and modernise the country's defence forces. After acquiring two Hamilton class cutters from the United States, the Philippines wants to purchase two more navy ships from the US to boost its maritime capabilities. Murmansk conference concludes sunken Russian subs must immediately be raised

[image: K-27 (Project 645) submarine]It is of critical importance that two sunken derelict Russian nuclear submarines, one of which was scuttled as radioactive trash and the other of which sank in rough weather on its way to decommissioning, be raised from the floor of the Kara Sea, scholars from Moscow’s Kurchatov Institute said Friday. The two subs in question – the K-159 and the K-27 – lay on the ocean floor, the first at the entrance to Kola Bay and the second in the shallows surrounding the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago, a former nuclear bomb testing range during Soviet times, as w... more »

Pope Francis Does Wonders In Palestine, Gives Gift of Hope

*Photo source: AP.* An excerpt from, *"Pope Francis exceeds expectations for Palestinians"* by Daoud Kuttab, Al-Monitor, May 26, 2014: If the pope’s unscheduled stop at the wall provided the most dramatic image of the day, the pontiff’s speech at Manger Square in Bethlehem provided the media with a tangible news item. Politicizing The Court

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 16 hours ago
Stephen Harper has worked very hard to politicize this country's institutions. The story of how he tried to politicize the Supreme Court is beginning to emerge. Geoff Stevens writes: I am indebted to Sean Fine, the very good justice reporter at the *Globe and Mail,* for pulling aside the curtain that normally shields the judicial-selection process from public scrutiny. Working with sources independent of the Supreme Court -- no leaks there! -- Fine uncovered two crucial lists. One was the long list, prepared by the Prime Minister's Office and the Justice Department, of six potent... more »

Does Marco Rubio Still Snort Coke?

I'm not wondering if Rubio is still a cocaine user because he supported Florida coke dealer, teabagger, hate talk radio sociopath and ex-congressman Trey Radel (not to be confused with another kind of GOP sociopath, Trey Gowdy; still in Congress). I'm asking because the Tallahassee party house he and another disgraced former Republican congressman (and his ex-best friend), David Rivera, own, was once a notorious for free-flowing drugs, women and dirty cash. But maybe Rubio cleaned up his act. Watch the Colbert video and judge for yourself. And, as long as we're talking about v... more »

They can see that it’s time to learn, to think, and to change. Understanding how we got into this bog of predicaments requires learning, lots of learning. A welfare and nanny state will ultimately over-extend its "care" for the citizens. Spy, stop and penalize them because it cares for them so much. Dr. Paul Craig Roberts was not merely Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy under Ronald Reagan and an Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal. In 1982 he became the first occupant of the William E. Simon Chair for Economic Policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, holding this position to 1993. He became a Distinguished Fellow at the Cato Institute from 1993 to 1996. In this blog post he speaks of Zbigniew Brzezinski as his colleague, and explains the Brzezinski and Wolfowitz doctrines to prevent other countries from rising above the US. How Central Banks Are Waging War on Your Savings

He has reached an all time low with his recent editorial (“Wipe out Rentiers with Cheap Money,” 5/6/14), where he argues that the cheap money policy used by central banks is here to stay, so get used to it. What makes his conclusion so tainted is that he understands the consequences of this policy. Diabetes and dairy fat in India. The epidemics of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related conditions in India have been called iatrogenic (Raheja B.S. 1994), a product of diets high in linoleic acid as a result of “chasing the phantom of cholesterol” (Raheja et al. 1993). The traditional Indian diet (39% fat) supplied 20.3%E as saturated fats, mainly from ghee, with 5% from linoleic acid. Concerns that this diet is atherogenic have resulted in replacement of ghee with high-linoleate oils; the modern urban diet being 31.9% fat, with 5.6%E as saturated fat, and 16.9% linole... more »
