“Why Is Our Government (and Deep State) So Incompetent?”
*“Why Is Our Government (and Deep State) So Incompetent?”*
by Charles Hugh Smith
“Why is our government so incompetent? Short answer: because incompetence
has been fully institutionalized in every branch, every agency and every
nook and cranny of the state. Though many may reckon the U.S. government
(and its Deep State) are not so much incompetent as merely evil, I suggest
incompetence sows the seeds of evil consequences.
It’s easy to lay the responsibility for the state’s incompetence on its
staggering size and complexity, and there is much truth in the notion that

But are we really back to " Happy Days " ? A fair read of the whole of Putin's speech indicates that while Putin has restated his view of the Ukraine situation and seemingly softened his hard talk from the weekend , he has not softened the Russian view toward the Crimea at all. And on the 2 billion Ukraine owes Russia for natural gas ( as of the end of February , it's still due and Ukraine is still subject to the cancellation of its discount ! Moreover , the speech is also geared toward heading off not just the reluctant EU on the subject of sanctions , but also head off or truly isolate the US if unilateral sanctions are imposed .

I have an essay in The New Republic here following up on the "debate" with
John Holdren. This post is so that readers can engage with me and ask
questions. All are welcome but do note that this blog has a comment policy.
Note also that at Dot Earth at the New York Times, Any Revkin has posted up
a long comment from Martin Hoerling, a NOAA scientist and drought expert.
Well worth a read.
Here it is, have a read, then come back if you'd like to discuss.
The Circular Course Of Things
Yesterday, Pauline Marois announced that Quebecers will be going to the
polls on April 7th. She is prepared to defend her Charter of Values. But
she has said nothing about holding a third referendum.
In 1980, my wife and I voted in the first referendum. But by 1995, like
many of our generation, we had left Quebec -- not so much by choice but
from necessity. I began my teaching career at a new high school in the
Eastern Townships. The school's population was 1,100 students. By the time
we left twelve years later -- because of Quebec's language law and a weak
economy -- the school's... more »
Crimea Referendum vote March 16/14- Donetsk update
Updated once and maybe more to come....
CBC-Lawmakers in the embattled Crimean region of Ukraine have decided to
hold a referendum March 16 on whether Crimea should become part of Russia.
"This is our response to the disorder and lawlessness in Kyiv," Sergei
Shuvainikov, a member of the local Crimean legislature, said Thursday. "We
will decide our future ourselves."
The parliament in Crimea, which enjoys a degree (almost complete) of
autonomy under current Ukrainian law, voted 78 with eight abstentions in
favour of holding the referendum. *Local voters will also be given the

*Saturated fat is not bad for health, says heart expert*
*The word is getting out -- at long last*
NHS guidelines which advise cutting down on high fat foods like butter,
cream and chocolate may be putting the public at risk and should be
urgently revised, a leading heart scientist has warned.
Diets that are low in saturated fat do not lower cholesterol, prevent heart
disease or help people live longer, Dr James DiNicolantonio insists.
He is so concerned about misinterpretation of ‘flawed data’ that he has
called for a new public health campaign to admit ‘we got it wrong.’

Hillary Surfaces and Compares Putin to Hitler
With the restoration of the corrupt Clinton family dynasty looming the
likely successor to Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham-Clinton has played the
obligatory Nazi card in joining in on the Putin pile on. Mrss Clinton made
her remarks comparing Russian leader Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler during
a private appearance in California, taken along with similar off the cuff

AIPAC Dictates Terms on Future Iran DealDemands Iran Dismantle Civilian

by Jason Ditz, March 02, 2014

A key Israel Lobby convention, the AIPAC Conference was severely
inconvenienced today by the media coverage of Crimean secession, which many
complained was “stealing their thunder.”
Still it wouldn’t be an AIPAC conference if they didn’t treat US foreign
policy as something they could unilaterally dictate, and today that meant specific
demands for what the details of a US-Iran deal would be allowed to include.

'Obamacare' Is Helping Many It Was Intended To Help

I had misgivings about Barack Obama from the start -- that's why I voted
for Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary. I doubted
that Obama had the Beltway experience that he needed for an effective White
House. In many ways, I'd say that has proved to be true.
But my sympathies are largely with Obama now, especially in some of his
worst hours. I think the man's heart is generally in the right place, and
he's splattered with mud no matter what he does or doesn't do. Now we even

Putin effectively annexed two parts of Georgia, he frightened the US into
not implementing a missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic
(despite both countries being members of NATO and wanting it), and now he
has taken part of Ukraine.

BIlingual education: What does the research say?
Sent to Education Week, March 5, 2014
There are two crucial research findings related to the Sen. Lara's proposal
to repeal Proposition 227 ("Calif. Bill Would Repeal Bilingual-Education
Restrictions," March 4).
The first: study after study has shown that students in bilingual programs
outperform similar students enrolled in English-only programs on tests of
English reading.
The second: As noted by Prof. McField in the Ed Week article, dismantling
bilingual education in California has not improved achievement for English
learners in California.
Both of these findings deserve m... more »
As draft law nears passage, haredi Israelis take to streets
The powers that be, aka Zionist's, in Israel would have us believe that it
is always against them, but nothing could be further from the truth. Many
of the Jews in Israel and throughout the world disapprove of the ongoing
agenda to take control of that part of the world and would prefer to live
in peace. Hundreds of thousands of haredi Orthodox Jews protesting a
measure to draft them into the Israeli military, March 2, 2014. By Ben

Tax Cut 17: BIR vs. Physicians
The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) made this paid advertisement that
appeared in several national newspapers last weekend I think.
Posting below some comments by doctors expressed in facebook, posted on my
friend Dr. Jed Inciong's fb wall, except those from change.org petition and
Dr. Calimag. My own discussion at the end. Other posters/images are also
posted in fb, copy-pasting them here.

Equal treatment for UKIP?
The Telegraph reports that:
'Ukip have been given a boost in the run up to the European elections after
Ofcom ruled that broadcasters have to treat them in the same way as any
other major party.
The decision means Ukip will be given the same status as the Conservatives,
Labour and Liberal Democrats for election broadcasts and news coverage of
the May 22 contest.'
If the BBC do actually give UKIP equal status to Labour, Conservatives and
the LibDems then the type of coverage will be similar to the Conservatives
not Labour. The BBC's coverage of the Labour party will as usual be

Sandy Hook Police Dash Cam Video does not show children evacuating per Official Timeline.
The One and only photo released of children at SH. Suppose to have
happened at 10:47 AM - would have been in front of police dash cam shown
below. Never happened in front of dash cam. They were not running, but
walking. There is a Police Dash Cam video of the parking lot of Sandy
Hook. I show the official timeline as written out by the Police of what
happened and when. The official
President Obama just doesn't seem to understand! 我認為普京的目標是烏克蘭分裂成東,西,隨著工業和農業生產力的東與俄羅斯對齊。
WATERBOARD THE BITCH!
I mean, just stop and think a moment. Obama claims the authority to murder
a US citizen by drone strike just because they *might* be thinking of
harming US citizens, and here we have the most destructive force ever
unleashed against the American people, the IRS, clearly having committed
illegal actions (or Lerner would not need to take the Fifth) and Lerner
gets to walk out of the room? Remember that using the IRS against political
enemies was one of the articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon!

*R. v. Goleski*, 2014 BCCA 80:
Elements of Failure/Refusal
[71] As discussed in Lewko at para. 9, the elements of the offence that
the Crown must prove are: (i) a proper demand; (ii) a failure or refusal to
provide the required breath sample; and (iii) an intention to fail or
refuse to provide the required sample. In R. v. Moser 1992 CanLII 2839 (ON
CA), (1992), 71 C.C.C. (3d) 165 at 176 (Ont. C.A.), Mr. Justice Doherty
said this:
The essential elements of the offence described in s. 254(5) consist of a
proper demand and a refusal or failure to comply with that demand. The

'MISSILE DEFENSE' AGENCY..... RIGHT ON SCHEDULE
*Fiscal Year 2015 Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Budget Press Briefing *
You might not watch all of this so I thought I share a few of this
officer's words on the new "missile defense" (MD) budget request:
- "due to recent threat developments"
- The new missile defense interceptor "kill vehicle" will allow for "new
tactics in weapons doctrine"
- The MDA is "engineering the kill chain from beginning to end"
- New accuracy will "allow the war fighters to dramatically improve
their shot doctrine"
- The budget will allow the MDA to "continue to support Israel's missi... more »
Ukraine-O-Mania: Kerry Does Kiev
So on Tuesday (a.k.a. Kill List Day in the White House) John Kerry did the
helicopter hustle in Kiev (cue the *Pictures at an Exhibition* music in the
previous post), a bag of bribery cash in one hand, a bouquet of flowers in
the other. Nobody does subtle like the secretary of state:
And nobody does propagandistic bathos like the *New York Times:*
*Trudging through a damp mist, Mr. Kerry stopped first for an emotional
visit to improvised memorials where protesters were gunned down last month
as they voiced opposition to what was then Ukraine’s pro-Kremlin
government.*

Kiev snipers hired by Maidan leaders - leaked EU's Ashton phone tapeRT
The snipers who shot at protesters and police in Kiev were allegedly hired
by Maidan leaders, according to a leaked phone conversation between the EU
foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Estonian foreign affairs
minister, which has emerged online.
There is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers,
it was not Yanukovich, but it was somebody from the new coalition,” Urmas
Paet said during the conversation.
“I think we do want to investigate. I mean, I didn’t pick that up, that’s

Nigel in the Lions' Den
*Managers at the BBC (at the instigation of senior BBC management) have
passed a decree that Nigel Fagage is to debate Nick Clegg on the BBC, with
David Dimblebly presiding, in the run-up to this years's Euro elections. *
In the first year of the reign of Tony Hall, Director-General of the BBC,
came Nickuchadnezzar, Deputy Prime Minister, prince of the eunuchs, unto
the BBC, and besieged it.
It pleased Tony Hall to set over the BBC James Harding.
Now God had brought Nigel Farage into favour and tender love with the
voters of the United Kingdom, and the prince of the eunuchs sai... more »
