We have seen the demise of the traditional book club, but we have to ask,
why? Was it a case that they held onto their old model and believed that
change wasn’t required, or that that their demise happened too soon before
the digital opportunities were possible, or did the new Internet retailers
just blindside them, or did they simply just lack vision?
We are reminded of the Michael Porter quote, ‘The greatest danger in times
of turbulence is to do act with yesterday’s logic.’

UK Eurovision Entry 2014
When I heard Molly Smitten-Downes was our sacrificial victim entrant for
Eurovision this year, I was hoping for something a bit poppy. Nay, *dancey*.
After all, when she was one half of Stunt our Molly was party to a few
bouncy numbers that did okay with the music-buying public, not least the
execrable reworking of *Encore Une Fois*. But no, sod what I think. And
forget about the kind of musics our Eurovision partners like and vote for,
which also tends to be poppy and dancey. Auntie, as always, knows best.
So, what do you think? Nil points?

lessons from wisconsin and michigan: tim hudak's threat to ontario workers is not over
Last September, when Tim Hudak announced that he intended to break
Ontario's unions, it came as no surprise to labour activists. The head of
Ontario's Progressive Conservative Party, cynically framing the issue as
one of "choice," talked about "right-to-work" - a familiar euphemism for
union busting - and repealing the Rand Formula. That 1946 Canadian Supreme
Court decision ensures that everyone who enjoys the benefits of belonging
to a union contributes union dues, which in turn ensures that union
workplaces can survive.

Corporate Slavery Today - the irony of the TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE Oscar win!
I mean, the fact that the title TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE ties in almost
perfectly with the twelve years anniversay of 9/11 (it premiered at the
Telluride Film Festival on August 30, 2013). Kind of a lovely slap in the
slave face with the butt end of a whip, kind of a lovely series of whip
marks across the collective back, no?
But let's not discuss the ATROCITY OF 9/11 again, let's instead discuss
this spurious claim (by the film's P.R. i.e. speech writing, team) that
there are still 20,000,000 people born into and living in slavery today.
What a crock of shit.

Trade war against Russia would be an insanity
Obama's administration knows that it is not adequate to launch a hot war
against Russia just because the two countries disagree about the recent
events in Ukraine and what should be done about them to improve the
situation. But the White House is apparently thinking about some
significant economic sanctions against the Russian Bear and wants the
European countries to join. Not too surprisingly, Europe lives in a
different world – one that is closer to Russia – so the European leaders
mostly disagree.

A Note on the Ukrainian Revolution
In his polemic against "anti-authoritarian" socialists, Engels said this of
revolution.
A revolution is certainly the most authoritarian thing there is; it is the
act whereby one part of the population imposes its will upon the other part
by means of rifles, bayonets and cannon — authoritarian means, if such
there be at all; and if the victorious party does not want to have fought
in vain, it must maintain this rule by means of the terror which its arms
inspire in the reactionists.
Engels goes on to note that the problem with the 1871 Paris Commune was not
so much its authoritaria... more »

*Paddy Chayefsky’s time travel:* Has there ever been a movie like Network?
If memory serves, and we’re not sure it does, we were pretty much left cold
by the film in real time.
Simply put, TV news wasn’t anything like that when Network appeared in
1976. If memory serves, the film struck us as weirdly over-the-top, a
satire with nothing to satirize.
By now, the film has become a monument to time travel, to an astonishing

Misconceptions that Lenny Susskind, Scott Aaronson may share
*Most importantly, computer science cannot be fundamental in physics*
Two weeks ago, I discussed a recent breakthough in proving the Erdös
discrepancy conjecture for \(C=2\). The proof is computer-assisted and not
really human-checkable. It is long but doable even though you might a
priori think that the problem is hopelessly difficult. Consequently, it
confirmed my 2013 thesis that short questions sometimes require long
answers and proofs.
The solvability of the problem in "realistic" time is a reason to think
that \(P=NP\) could hold, too. A "polynomially fast solving" algorithm ... more »
This Video Should Go Viral! : The Truth About AIPAC - AIPAC Policy Conference 2014
Right now, while the world is teetering on a new World War and the
economies of the planet go to hell, the majority of the Jewish butt kissing
US Congress critters and so called Senators, are attending the annual AIPAC
"Policy Conference" in Washington DC where they will obediently step up to

psychopathic criminal state of Israel... It is such an abomination and

The problem with facts
Pops! aka @DD1958 has a serious problem answering a question that I have
posed him on Twitter many times now (here are just four examples):
So far he's been unable to answer the question, I wonder why...
The truth is that when Jordan invaded 'the West Bank' and held it between
1950 and 1967 and likewise Egypt with Gaza, there were no screams of
protest from the 'Palestinians' about 'occupation'.But when the Israelis
(for which you can read Jews) took back these two areas in the 1967 war,
suddenly the 'Palestinians' decide that they are being occupied...

Agents and Trolls and Shills, Oh My!!!

*Agents and Trolls and Shills, Oh My!!!*
All of us who write on topics like the ones that I cover over here on RTS
have been inundated with "troll" or "shill" activity at one time or
another. That is the main reason why I closed the comment section of RTS
down, because with most of the articles I was putting out last year we were
getting over a hundred, if not 200-300 comments, and there was so many
agents/shills/trolls hitting the site that just moderating the comments was
taking hours and hours of my time.

CORRUPTION SPREADS: How bad is New Jersey?
*MONDAY, MARCH 3, 2014*
*Part 1—Our propaganda, our selves:* How bad is corruption in New Jersey?
Any corruption is bad, of course, including that which continues to spread
through our corporate “news” channels.
But how bad is corruption *in New Jersey?* If you’ve watched Rachel Maddow
in recent weeks, you have been repeatedly told that it’s extremely bad.
But alas! You’ve seen no real attempt to examine this claim in a
journalistic fashion.
In fairness, references to the Sopranos have largely ended at MSNBC.
Routinely, though, Maddow pushes the idea that corruption in New Jersey ... more »

Iraq’s Resurgent Insurgency, Interview With Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi
Since fighting broke out in Iraq’s Anbar province at the end of 2013 many
of Iraq’s older insurgent groups have returned to the fray. Organizations

There's No Legitimate Reason To Assume Shenna Bellows Can't Defeat Susan Collins In Maine
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee seems content to waste their
resources on reactionary Blue Dog Travis Childers' hopeless attempt to win
a Senate seat in deep red Mississippi (where Obama lost with 44%) while
ignoring the best Democrat running for Senate in years, Maine's Shenna

LIGHTING THE FIRES FOR CHAOS IN UKRAINE
A couple of people have wondered if I exaggerated the possibility of war
with Russia over Ukraine. I don't think so - in fact I would suggest that
the proxy war is already underway.
Two of the first things that happened following the US led coup d'etat in
Ukraine was the "new government" declaring that Russian would be removed as
one of the official languages (Ukraine has millions of Russians in it) and
that the ban on Nazi symbols and ideology would be lifted. It cannot be
said often enough that many of the violent agitators in Kiev were in fact
the ultra-nationalist descendants... more »

What Does it Mean to be Anti-Growth?
I have a new piece out today in the* Earth Island Journal*. It is part of an
exchange with John de Graaf, who argues that economic growth must end. My
piece explores what it actually means to be anti-growth.
Here is how I start:
It has become fashionable in some circles to come out against economic
growth. Bill McKibben, the author and climate change activist, asserts that
“growth may be the one big habit we finally must break.” He adds that this
is “a dark thing to say, and un-American.” Such calls for an end to growth
are typically advanced in environmental debates and those abou... more »
Don't punish Russian Canadians
The situation in Ukraine is dire and the Canadian government - quite
rightly - is considering all options in terms of response.
One option being considered is increasing restrictions on travellers from
Russia.
That option must be avoided.
Hundreds of thousands of Canadians come from Russia and have family there.
Russian Canadians are Canadian and they must not lose family visits and
contact because of what a government not elected by them has done.

Alan Morrison: Another Indiana Amway/Walmart Player

After Indiana House District 42’s Republican Alan Morrison appeared at a
crackerbarrel session in the small town of Clinton over the weekend,
someone noted on facebook that “Morrison was very condescending and
argumentative to some of the citizens, especially to a couple of local

school privatization movement in Indiana, but the good citizens of Clinton
(and those in Vermillion, Vigo, Clay, Warren, Fountain, and Parke counties
which make up Morrison’s district) probably don’t know that Morrison, l... more »

Improvement of Real Estate Investor Opportunity with Financing
Real estate investors could play a key role in the upturn of the housing

maximum was four financed properties allowed per borrower. The new limit is
