I'm a little late on this, but I would be remiss if I did not mention the
recent death of Terry Coppage, aka BartCop. Bart died March 5th at the age
of 60, from complications of the flu, pneumonia, and leukemia.
Bart was one of the pioneers of the liberal blogosphere, starting out in
February 1996 with an email newsletter that was converted to web pages by Marc
Perkel. He gave much support to new bloggers, including luminaries like Digby
and Atrios. Though I never knew him, I am in his debt as well. The

march break for teens at our library
I've just finished my first March Break (the Canadian equivalent of Spring
Break in the US) in my new position as a youth librarian. It was
exhilarating and a lot of work, but not nearly as exhausting as I imagined.
March Break was great for many reasons. One, I have great support from a
senior librarian and manager who appreciate my efforts. Two, I am part of

In all the coverage of the 'missing' Malaysian Air 777 - Flight MH370 -
people are accepting that the aircraft's communication systems were turned
off in the plane, whether by one of the pilots or by a third party (or

FRACKED UP
A string of small earthquakes in Mahoning County, Ohio this week triggered
the Ohio State Department of Natural Resources to order a halt on fracking
operations near the tremor site. Hilcorp Energy, which is producing oil and
natural gas out of the Utica Shale, is the only company with fracking
operations near the epicenter. Although, the boom in oil and gas drilling
central and southern U.S. has been tied to an increase in the number of
earthquakes in the region, RT's Perianne Boring reporters there is little
evidence to show that hydraulic fracturing is actually the cause.

Not mentioned in the Times' editorials (March 13, 14) is the astonishing
amount of testing required by the Common Core and the requirement that
testing must be done online.
No Child Left Behind "only" required tests at the end of year in reading
and math in grades 3-8 and once in high school. The common core aims to
test all subjects in all grades, and includes interim tests to be given
throughout the school year. There is also discussion of pretesting in the
fall, to judge "improvement."

Unemployment Insurance Extension? Really?
Yesterday the Senate finally reached a bipartisan deal on extending
unemployment insurance. Does anyone think the House is going to give it
serious consideration? The 5 months worth of benefits (around $10 billion)
would go until May… if the House passes it. The Senate will vote on it
towards the end of March, after the Senate gets back from yet another
vacation.
