RIP BartCop

Kenneth Thomas at Middle Class Political Economist - 48 minutes ago
I'm a little late on this, but I would be remiss if I did not mention the recent death of Terry Coppage, aka BartCop. Bart died March 5th at the age of 60, from complications of the flu, pneumonia, and leukemia. Bart was one of the pioneers of the liberal blogosphere, starting out in February 1996 with an email newsletter that was converted to web pages by Marc Perkel. He gave much support to new bloggers, including luminaries like Digby and Atrios. Though I never knew him, I am in his debt as well. The affiliated site, Marty Pflugrath's BartCop Entertainment, was the first to perma... more »

march break for teens at our library

I've just finished my first March Break (the Canadian equivalent of Spring Break in the US) in my new position as a youth librarian. It was exhilarating and a lot of work, but not nearly as exhausting as I imagined. March Break was great for many reasons. One, I have great support from a senior librarian and manager who appreciate my efforts. Two, I am part of an amazing team of people who pitched in so I could devote myself more fully to programming, and who encouraged me daily. Three, so many amazing people lent their time and energy and expertise to the library, presenting progr... more »

Al Jazeera's Propaganda War Against Crimea

Once again, the laughable "news" network Al Jazeera is carrying water for the criminal U.S. government. Their programming on Crimea is awful. The people of Crimea should do what the people of Syria did three years ago, and the people of Egypt are doing today, which is to kick these liars who pose as journalists out of their country. Journalists should not abuse the right of free speech to invent lies, distort historic events, create social discord in countries, encourage violence and strife, and promote wars. We've already covered the Spanish king's bleak pre-dawn monologue ("Verdi's King Philip -- a man in crisis," January 2013), where he makes clear that he knows his young wife, the French princess Elisabeth, doesn't love him and never loved him, the proceeds to pretend that his only problem is that even royalty doesn't give people to see into human hearts, where only God can see... more »

It speaks volumes, I think, that Bonnie Greer was invited to give the first of this year's *Lent Talks *on Radio 4. That the BBC would choose someone like Bonnie Greer - a left-leaning, arts-orientated writer - to open this year's series is hardly surprising. Malaysian Airline Flight 370 Diverted ? Day 8 Updates ! Diversion of MH370 airliner was a 'deliberate act', says Malaysian PM ! Key takeaway : based on satellite communication and analysis by FAA / NTSB / AAIB and Malaysian Authorities , the plane’s last communication with the satellite was in one of two possible corridors: a northern corridor stretching approximately from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to northern Thailand, or a southern corridor stretching approximately from Indonesia to the southern Indian ocean . With a diversion being the new consensus , what is the status of the passengers and crew ? If this diversion was a hijacking , why haven't the hijackers communicated any demands in a full week of mystery ? RIP- Tony Benn

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
As a young socialist in Brooklyn and Long Island, I looked around for role models and heroes. The Democratic Party weren't offering but across the Atlantic, England had Tony Benn. He died today, age 88, at his home in London. Born into the aristocracy, Benn-- formerly 2nd Viscount Stansgate-- renounced his titles, the first peer to ever do so, and served in the House of Commons for 50 years and was a Cabinet Minister under two Labor Prime Ministers, Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. He was the leader of the left wing faction of the Labor Party and eventually lost out to the conse... more »

Setting aside a default - Five factors

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
Traditionally there are three factors considered in setting aside a default. But Mountain View Farms Ltd. v. McQueen, 2014 ONCA 194 lists five: [48] The court must consider the following three factors: (a) whether the motion was brought promptly after the defendant learned of the default judgment; (b) whether there is a plausible excuse or explanation for the defendant's default in complying with the Rules; and (c) whether the facts establish that the defendant has an arguable defence on the merits. [49] To this list, I would add the following two factors the court ... more »

Happy White Day. Onward to the White Man March

Rufus News From Atlantis at News From Atlantis. - 1 day ago
Today, the 14th March is White Day. This is a day when boys are supposed to give sweets to girls that they like. Never heard of White Day? Well, unless you live in Korea, you aren't likely to be familiar with it. In these times of United Nations sanctioned International Days for all manner of nonsense - such as a day to 'remember' the ludicrous propaganda about kosher bars of soap - one would expect there to be a day dedicated to the people of Europe, but alas, there is not. So White Day remains a day for the confectionery trade in Korea, and there is no recognition of the cont... more »

In the great tradition of letters i write you to solicit your support for my great endeavor. Gulliver's travels was a fairy tale that moved the world like an earthquake. IN SEARCH OF EVEN THE MOST BASIC SKILLS: Scripts and errors from the Post!

Consider reaction within the Washington Post to last week’s announcement that the SAT will be changed. Last Saturday, Alexandra Petri debuted the scripted standard reactions from within the Post. PetrI is Harvard class of 2010. (We misstated the year in yesterday’s post, which we have corrected.) As such, she’s barely 25. Another Blow to the Claim that Successful Charters Serve the “Same” Students

John Thompson at @ THE CHALK FACE - 1 day ago
For years, charters have gotten away with the spin that they serve the “same students” as high-poverty charter schools. In almost every case, those brazen claims were transparently false, but they were repeated with such confidence that many seemed to believe them. Rarely was there an effort to explain the seemingly arcane issue of “backfill.” […]

The Bully

Sophia Love at AMERICAN KABUKI - 1 day ago
There is little need for a judge and jury in a place of equality and sovereignty. In fact, these terms would be obsolete; reminders perhaps of such notions from a time long ago. The whole concept of one sovereign being standing in authority over another sovereign being is very much like the bully in the playground. Cartoon depictions of this child show him to be typically male and larger than average with less intelligence. This image defines the justice system as it currently stands. For what is the definition of justice? Fairness and tacit compliance with the law of the la... more »

Extending time to appeal by Crown

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
R. v. Hobbs, 2014 ONCA 183: [2] The test for an extension for the Crown in these circumstances is the interests of justice, having regard to factors such as whether the Crown formed a*bona fide* intention to appeal during the relevant time period, whether reasonable diligence was used in locating the party for service, whether the respondent would suffer undue prejudice and whether there is an arguable appeal: see, *R. v. Watkins*, [1999] O.J. 2314 (C.A. In Chambers). This is not a rigid test. The focus is on the interests of justice. The failure of the Crown to establish ... more »

Corporate Welfare Queen, Eva Moskowitz, Strong Arming of School Staff and Students to Save Her Empire

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 1 day ago
from the Nation: On the first Tuesday in March, thousands of students, parents and teachers rallied at the New York state capitol in Albany to protest what the media quickly dubbed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “war” on charter schools and minority students. Eva Moskowitz, the founder of the Success Academy charter network and one of the mayor’s fiercest critics, closed all twenty-two of her schools so that students and staff could participate in what she called “the largest civic field trip in history.” But it wasn’t merely a field trip; the rally was a political event, in p... more »

The time has come. You’ve got a house full of… stuff, for lack of a better word, and it needs to go. Whether if you’re planning on a new minimalist lifestyle, where you’re scaling back to the bare necessities, or you’re simply after a fresh (and tidier) start, you’re ready for a change. That old sofa with the coffee stains on its cover, the kitchen table with the one stumpy leg, those horrible lace curtains that your mum gave you, that belonged in the 80s… they’re going to go to a better place. sue at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
It was a neat twist that the presenter who was chosen to host the item about BBC 3‘s censorship of the gay/Muslim debate was Mishal Husain the ‘Asian’ rather than Evan Davis the ‘Gay’. The internet has been speculating as to whether ‘Muslim’ trumps ‘gay’ in the BBC’s hierarchy of specially protected minorities. It seems Muslim *does* trump gay, which is odd when you take into consideration the relative preponderance of BBC employees in each category. But I guess gays haven’t go so much leverage or something. “Dr Mohammed Naseem, chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, and Terry Sand... more »

Unemployment Insurance Extension? Really?

Yesterday the Senate finally reached a bipartisan deal on extending unemployment insurance. Does anyone think the House is going to give it serious consideration? The 5 months worth of benefits (around $10 billion) would go until May… if the House passes it. The Worst In History?

When historians eventually get around to rendering judgement on the Harper Government, they will point to many things. They will certainly cite the gutting of Statistics Canada. Jeffrey Simpson writes: In the summer of 2010, more than 200 institutions and individuals asked Stephen Harper’s government not to eliminate the long-form census. They represented a Who’s Who of experts in statistics. All sorts of groups, from B’nai Brith to business associations and trade unions, argued that the long-form census, which required some, but only some, citizens by law to answer questions for... more »

Russia will nuke U.S. if tensions run too high

I have been amazed by the degree of anti-Russian warmongering by the U.S. and other Western politicians who are willing to ignite an economic conflictbecause of events in Little Russia, a territory that they don't understand at all. Despite the devastating global economic consequences, we cannot really exclude that a trade war against Russia will occur. But things are worse. War games are taking place near the NATO-Russia borders, Ukraine is asking for U.S. weapons, and the U.S. tends to suggest that they will help the "people of Ukraine" (a category that clearly explicitly remove... more »
