Another day, another scam. As they say in the trade, grifters gotta grift. In his blog today, Paul Krugman thoroughly debunked yet another "blame the victim" canard being spread far and wide by the disinforming punditocracy. The latest bunk is the claim that a dreaded *Skills* *Shortage* is causing the unrelenting scourge of chronic unemployment. It's an idea that apparently is taking the place of the deficit hawk austerity doctrine. And, says Krugman, it's such a stupid idea that even some honest conservatives are scoffing at it: This is very much a zombie doctrine — that is, a do... more »

Why PM's Security Costs Have Doubled

So nobody does this. Source. The cost of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s RCMP personal security team has more than doubled since he took office, according to records obtained by the Ottawa Citizen. RCMP numbers, obtained by the Citizen under access to information legislation, show the annual operating budget of the Prime Minister Protection Detail (PMPD) has increased 122 per cent between 2006 and 2014 — to almost $20 million annually. There is a mightily growing number of Canadians who would love to "snatch him bald-headed." I'm one.

*SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2014* *We’ll start with Walsh’s reaction:* Randy Mastro’s report about Fort Lee has its strong points and its weak points. (For today, we aren’t considering the part of the report which concerns events in Hoboken.) On the positive side, the report includes apparent new information about the events which preceded Fort Lee. On the down side, the report never really confronts the possibility that Bridget Kelly and David Wildstein may have received a go-ahead for the lane closings from some higher source within the Christie administration. Democrats and Republicans alike have drawn up complex formulas with wonky names to set reimbursement levels. The Medicare Economic Index was the formula of choice in the 1970s. It was a big day for both of those assholes yesterday. Barack Obama, trying to square the circle of his total hypocrisy on the Ukraine Crisis, said that the invasion of Iraq was different because the USA didn't conquer and they left the Iraqis a free people. Well, sorry. Sadly no. You went in there to privatize Iraq's oil. And you turned the country into a complete hell-hole. You took an authoritarian dictatorship with torture chambers and rape-rooms and fear, and you turned it into an inferno of rape, torture, dictatorship, sectarian conflict, civil war and one-million dead million... more »

Technically just the word "Words" is still the same, along with the concept that words have been stolen. Everything else is original. Except the statistics, which I found. Current Greece Bailout Scheme as of March 28 , 2014 - As a general statement , Greece will get just enough money to payoff the latest round of debt to the EFSF and IMF - then will be allowed to wander aimlessly in its Zombie state until the next loan disbursement come due - then it will get just enough to pay that debt off as well.......of course we are soon to reach the end of the line under the current rescue scheme in place for Greece ( end of Q4 2014 ) ...... Which makes the Greece Supreme Court decision ostensibly ruling against bank confiscations quite interesting - assuming the decision is actually allowed to stand .....Meanwhile , the current Greek Government has high confidence regarding its latest reform bill ( greek citizens corn-holed by legislation ) , we shall see if this high confidence is warranted by the end of the weekend..... meanwhile greek auxiliary pensions take a big whack ( thanks Troika and current Greek Government ) .....Greek bill gives rescue fund legal cover for bank capital boosts ( banksters always get taken care of .. ) ..... The Growth of Pass-Through Entities

Greg Mankiw at Greg Mankiw's Blog - 21 hours ago
Over the past few decades, there has been an amazing shift in how businesses are taxed. See the figure below, which is from CBO. Businesses are more and more taxed as pass-through entities, where the income shows up on personal tax returns rather than on corporate returns. (Here is an article discussing how the mutual giant Fidelity recently switched from one form to the other.) This phenomenon complicates the interpretation of tax return data. For example, when one looks at the growth of the 1 percent, or the 0.1 percent, in the Piketty-Saez data, that growth is likely exaggera... more »

Defamation in the Internet Age: The Trial

Were my ears burning yesterday? Frankly, no. But a comment by Marky Mark on an old blogpost alerted me. First, the old blogpost, User Pay, from June 2012. The stage was being set for an examination of defamation in the Internet age. My point then was that no matter who *won*, everyone who participates in discussion forums, blogs, comment threads, and now, I suppose, Twitter and Facebook too, had a stake in the matter. And that its resolution was going to cost a bomb. A lively discussion ensued and some strong positions were taken. Now, finally, the issue is before a court and bl... more »
