Does the data support charters? Does the data support test-centered schooling?
Sent to the Wall Street Journal, March 12, 2014
"Cuomo steps up for charters," (editorial, March 10) claims that New York
charter school students outperform students in nearby traditional schools.
But charters can often be very selective in who they admit, and can expell
"problem" students. Were these factors included in the New York analysis?
Despite their advantages, studies show that in general charter schools do
not do as well as public schools.

Self Publishing Is Going to Just Get Bigger, Embrace It
Today we face the prospect of drowning in tidal wave self-published eBooks,
YouTube videos, photos, independent music videos and tracks etc which are
loaded onto sites alongside and often more frequently than traditionally
produced works. Historically these self-published works have been regarded
by many as substandard works, looked down upon by the traditional
marketplace who referred to them by the term ‘vanity publishing’. Some
would even still argue that if you can’t get a publisher, producer or third
party to publish your work, then it must be of questionable quality and of ... more »

SELLING THE COUP BACK IN THE USA
Back in the USA ..... Obama is set to play host to Ukraine's 'interim'
Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk (Yats). The two will discuss the $1
billion aid package Washington has already pledged to Kiev. It's a sign of
just how deeply involved America is in the Ukrainian crisis.
The real purpose of the trip though is a sales job - to sell the new
government of Ukraine, empowered by a US-NATO engineered coup d'etat, to
the American people. The Obama administration must make the American
people 'feel good' about this provocative intervention by the US in the
affairs of Ukraine.

Why does Maddow keep pounding Fort Lee?

*We offer the first of two theories:* We sometimes find it depressing to
discuss Rachel Maddow’s coverage of Fort Lee—to contemplate her hackneyed

Still, we said we’d offer two theories about this phenomenon—two possible
ideas concerning what makes Rachel run. Today, we offer one.
This morning’s theory follows an interesting night on the TV machine. Again
last night, Maddow opened her program with two segments about Fort Lee. Her

*WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2014*
*Part 3—We can’t comprehend the Times:* Last Sunday, in an irate editorial,
the Washington Post denounced the impending changes to the SAT.
The College Board “appears to be...making the SAT easier,” the editors

supposition-rich opinion column was built on the same presumption.
Ditto for an opinion column the Post published one day before.
For a test like the SAT, it isn’t entirely clear what it means to say that
the test is getting easier—getting “dumbed down.” The SAT isn’t a pass... more »
Keeping Corporate America White and Privileged
If you thought the SAT was just for keeping the riffraff out of Harvard and
for keeping Brown white, then think again. The SAT is becoming a standard
measure of high rolling job applications.
As Stephen Colbert said last night, now with Wall Street asking for SAT
scores from 30 years prior, you can be assured that one miserable day from
11th grade can determine the course of your entire life.
So the SAT offers another generation an added benefit to reproducing
educational inequality, so that now the bogus meritocracy system can be
used to screen direct access to high paying jobs.

Iraq Reaches Post-03 High In Oil Exports In February 2014
Iraq’s oil industry has been stuck on a 23-month plateau. After two new
single point mooring stations were opened in Basra in early 2011 the
country’s exports flat-lined. Finally, in February 2014 Iraq reached a new
post-03 high in foreign sales with nearly 2.8 million barrels a day in
exports. The question now is whether that was a one off event or whether
the Oil Ministry is capable of sustaining that effort.
In February Iraq reached a new mark in exports. It averaged 2.799 million
barrels a day. The previous high was 2.62 million barrels, which was first

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: Crabs
*I Quote The Enemy:*
The second theory for the virtual disappearance of 269 people from the site

ECONOMICS FOR REAL PEOPLE: That Which is Seen, and That Which is Not Seen
[image: image]
*Here’s the note about this week’s session with our friends at the Auckland
University Economics Group…*
In this week’s seminar we’ll be looking at one if the most prevalent
fallacy in economics, which (when committed) leads to profound economic
errors, and (when spotted) starts you thinking like a real economist.
First highlighted by French Economist Frederic Bastiat in the nineteenth

Edward Snowden says: "We have an [intelligence] oversight model that could work; the problem is when the overseers aren’t interested in oversight"
*At SXSW, Edward Snowden's lawyer, Ben Wizner of the ACLU, with ACLU

connected Snowden.*
*"The problem is when the overseers aren’t interested in oversight, . . .
when we have James Clapper, the director of National Intelligence, in front

lie, because . . . they have the questions a day in advance, and no one
says anything, allowing all Americans to believe this is a true answer.
That is an incredibly dangerous thing."*

How to Hide a Nazi Army
West backs Nazis in Ukraine, compares Putin to Hitler for trying to stop

*March 12, 2014* (Tony Cartalucci - *New Eastern Outlook*) - Blanket
denials have been made across the Western media regarding the presence of
Neo-Nazis among the ranks of "Euromaidan" mobs that had rioted in Kiev for
months before finally executing a coup, ousting the democratically elected
government of Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych. A prime example of this
was the Daily Beast’s article, “Putin’s Crimea Propaganda Machine,” which

Obituary: Bob Crow
I'm shocked I have to write this piece now. Bob Crow, probably the most
effective trade union leader of this generation has been cruelly snatched
away from our movement. Our thoughts have to be with those who feel his
passing most keenly - his family, his friends, his close comrades.
Now is not the time for a critical appraisal of his industrial and
political career. That can wait. But we can appreciate what Bob represented
to our movement. In the first place, enemies and fair-weather friends in
their effusive (some might say fulsome) obituaries all agree that Bob won

Getting some perspective on the current situation in the Ukraine...
*what's really going on?*
Ran into this a few days ago at the website of Charles Hugh Smith, *Of Two
Minds*. Definitely worth a listen in order to better understand the
situation in the Ukraine. There's been way too much disinformation
floating about the blogosphere.
My long held belief is that all wars are fought for only one reason;
economics, or to put it more crassly, "follow the money." There may be
other sub-categories of reasons, but the overriding impetus comes from the
desire for wealth, control, and power - three concepts that are closely
linked.

Re: "Can writing be assessed?" March 10.
There is no point in testing writing form, i.e. the use of conventional
writing style, grammatical accuracy. Research consistently tells us that
writing form comes from reading, not from writing and not from study.
Writing itself is a powerful tool for solving problems and making yourself
smarter. This requires mastery of the composing process (e.g. knowing that
as you revise you come up with better ideas). This cannot be tested.

In the last few months Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s State of Law (SOL)

Muslims of the British Raj would not submit to British rule or acknowledge

Harper's South Korea Trip
I am not against free trade per se, it has its benefits in expanding
markets and bringing our world together. When people are trading with each
other and making money, they are much less likely to wage war on each
other. However, we should not uncritically accept free trade deals. We must
be cognizant of national sovereignty and jobs.
Harper is travelling to South Korea to seal a free trade deal with them, it
would be Canada's first free trade deal with an Asia-Pacific country. There
are some potential benefits to this deal - in particular for Canada's
agricultural exports - howe... more »
“5 Things I Learned From Helping My Dad Die”
*“5 Things I Learned From Helping My Dad Die”*
by Noah Michelson
“During the summer of 2006, my father suddenly developed a deep,
science-fiction-scary cough unlike anything my family had ever heard
before. It wasn't the kind of cough that comes with an ordinary cold. It
was the kind of cough that makes anyone who hears it - even strangers in
the next aisle over at the grocery store - nervous. It was a warning. An
omen. We just didn't know it.
The cough persisted for months, and after an incorrect diagnosis of
pneumonia, in September we finally learned that it was lung cancer. Even... more »
The Charter School Advantage is Built on Discrimination and Inequity
Heilig writing from Express-News:
. . .The achievement gap is real, and it must be fixed. But I don't believe
charter schools writ large have found the magic elixir. Charters are
diverse, with many models. In recent years, so-called corporate charters
have swept into San Antonio, dazzling the media with high test scores and
college-going rates. These franchises include KIPP, IDEA, Great Hearts,
BASIS and Carpe Diem.
The reports from some of these corporate charters of 100 percent graduation
rates and 100 percent of students attending college seem too good to be
true. They are. A cl... more »

The Roswell Slides - Once Again
Although this might be considered kicking the sleeping dogs and stirring
the pot unnecessarily, I think it important to address this issue one more
time. I have, previously, denied that I was involved in the investigation
of the slides that allegedly show the body of an alien creature. When I
said that I hadn’t participated in the investigation, some saw that as a
lie on my part, but the truth then, as now, is that other than a few
limited enquiries made prior to learning more of the story, I did not
investigate.
To recap, about a year ago, rumors began to circulate that members of... more »

*EHUD BARAK:* It's a clear act of war. I believe that Tony Blair put it

Photos for Sandy Hook victims created in AP's media photo use site, month before shooting. Video proof.
The guy had access to AP's photo site for media use at college. AP has
now restricted that photo site, after his videos have come out. . He was
able to do searches of photos uploaded to AP for stories with a pre date of
December 13, 2012. The site, shows when the photos are created and
submitted to AP for media use, they all have 'creation' dates. Remember

I can admit it: I was SUPER EXCITED!!

The Flim Flam Men
Listening to Pierre Poilievre defend the "Fair" Elections Act, you really
have to ask yourself: Just who is this guy? He insists that voter fraud is
a major problem. But Michael Harris writes that a report by Harry Neufeld
concluded that voter fraud was virtually non existent in Canada. However,
in what will surely go down as one of the funniest spectacles in Canadian
political history, Poilievre has been quoting from a report to defend Bill
C-23 even after the author of the report said he has misread it. That said,
Poilievre manfully insists that *his* interpretation of Neufeld’s ... more »
Jerry Brown Runs Into Trouble-- Conscious Grassroots Democrats
Do you notice that it isn't just conservatives who don't care about
protecting the planet but that there's also a fault line between young
people-- who believe in a future-- and lots of old people, who just don't
get all that worked up over the future? For the record, I'm old-- and I
very much do care about preserving our planet. I heard Alan Grayson

Playing your cards right.
You know when you’ve made a bit of an arse of yourself and later you go
over it in your head thinking up clever things you should have said? Well
most of us just have to ‘get over it’. But if you’ve got a column in the

*What is this contraption for?*
What you should read today, since I am too busy to blog:
This came out last week, but I missed it: Tensions rise between Beijing and
Hong Kong, so Hng Kongers are increasingly looking to Taiwan. This was not
hard to see coming -- colonizers reinforce and reconstruct local identities
in opposition to their own. Beijing is simply too inept and too insecure to
tolerate Hong Kong's autonomy in the long run. Sad, but it's (yet another)
warning for Taiwan, as if Tibet and Xinjiang were not enough....

But why have McLaren eradicated the Marlboro logo from Senna's rear wing?
Rewriting history? Just because cigarette advertising is banned in F1 now,
doesn't change that it was allowed back then. Ridiculous decision.
