The Liar's Crusade

Capt. Fogg at The Impolitic - 1 hour ago
By Capt. Fogg *Reckless and incompetent expounders of Holy Scripture bring untold trouble and sorrow on their wiser brethren when they are caught in one of their mischievous false opinions and are taken to task by those who are not bound by the authority of our sacred books. For then, to defend their utterly foolish and obviously untrue statements, they will try to call upon Holy Scripture for proof and even recite from memory many passages which they think support their position, although they understand neither what they say nor the things about which they make assertion. * *--S... more »

Oh, the Humanity

Karen Garcia at Sardonicky - 1 hour ago
If CNN devoted even a hundredth as much time covering our hijacked economy as it does to covering that missing airplane, we might just be getting somewhere and afflicting the comfortable. But reality shows which feature an international scavenger hunt with overtones of terror, intrigue, and anguish are ratings magnets. And so the corporate media are only too happy to sate our appetites. The Saga of Flight MH370 must and will take dramatic precedence over that other truly epic humanitarian crisis playing out right now, in our own backyard. That's because marathon coverage by cable ... more »

Market Failure vs. Government Failure, Part 4

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 2 hours ago
Market failure can be created by everyone and anyone in this planet, anytime and anywhere. For instance, person A will demand a USB/flash disk with 100 GB memory sold for only P300. Person B may demand for the same product for only P400 (their “willingness to pay”) and so on. There is a demand for that product. Where is the supply? Zero at those prices. There is no market clearing price as its current price could be several thousand pesos now. Market failure. R. v. Wilson, 2014 ONCA 212 holds not wearing a seatbelt is a strict liability offence: [33] Holding s. 106(2) to be an offence of strict liability comports with the wisdom of *Sault Ste. The Hanged Man and the Towers

Paul Coker at News Spike - 1 day ago
As the Fool leaves the throne of the Goat God, he comes upon a Tower, fantastic, magnificent, and familiar. In fact, The Fool, himself, helped build this Tower back when the most important thing to him was making his mark on the world and proving himself better than other men. Inside the Tower, at the top, arrogant men still live, convinced of their rightness. Seeing the Tower again, the Fool feels as if lightning has just flashed across his mind; he thought he'd left that old self behind when he started on this spiritual journey. But he realizes now that he hasn't. He's been s... more »

Iraq’s Anbar Council Claims Stability Returned To Ramadi

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 1 day ago
Fighting continues every day in Iraq’s western Anbar province. Recently however, the Anbar provincial council has claimed that the city of Ramadi has become a bastion of stability in an otherwise unstable governorate. Its talked about the end of military operations in the city, the return of displaced families and everyday life, and called on Baghdad to send funds to help the refugees and compensate those that have suffered losses. Those statements are contradicted by the fact that Ramadi has seen the most violence in the governorate over the last several weeks. (*BBC*) Beginnin... more »

Policy Follies

My experience has made me skeptical. I believe that’s a requirement for scientists and “herd quitters.” After all, the opposite of skeptical is gullible. When sustainability comes up, I’m usually left wondering who’s defined the criteria. It frequently seems that profitability isn’t part of these discussions, for example. But there’s no sustainability without profit. After all, there are easier ways than farming to not make money! A definition I am most comfortable with describes sustainability as “ … meet[ing] the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future ge... more »

Students Occupy the Legislature, Roundup and Linkfest =UPDATEDX7=

A form of madness

I always enjoy The Life Scientific. I wasn’t even put off by the episode where the subject turned out to be a prominent anti-Israel campaigner as well as an eminent scientist. Well, I was a bit, and I probably learned to be even more distrustful than I already was. Anne Glover Anyway, I listened to the delightful Anne Glover, professor of molecular and cell biology at Aberdeen University amongst other things, and one thing in particular resonated with me, and stayed in my mind. The strap line to her episode states: “Opposing GM crops is a form of madness” Her expertise is in the... more »

Commentators are lining up to praise Jim Flaherty. Andrew Coyne is not among them. Under Flaherty, he writes, budgets ceased to have much meaning. They became masterpieces of obfuscation: Under Flaherty, not only did budgets cease to be budgets — now they are Economic Action Plans — but they ceased to mean much of anything. The budget and the estimates are not only expressed on different accounting systems, but parliamentarians are provided with no means of reconciling the two. Actual departmental spending, as recorded in the public accounts, routinely bears no resemblance to ei... more »

Could Lindsey Graham Lose to a Democrat?

The South Caolina Senate race may be more of a tossup than anyone realizes. With Patty Murray, the architect of the DSCC's stunning series of victories in 2012, having turned over the reins of the committee to one of the Senate's weakest, lamest and least capable members, Michael Bennet, there are ominous signs ominously pointing to the possibility that Democrats will narrowly lose the Senate this year. The hackish executive director, Guy Cecil, who totally controls Bennet has vetoed DSCC involvement on behalf of grassroots progressives in races in South Dakota and Maine and Senate... more »

Singing & Music Were Given To Man - A Discourse by Peter Deunov

Stranger in a Strange Land at Stranger in a Strange Land - 1 day ago
*Singing and music are given man as a method of transforma**tion of energies*. Music plays in Nature the role of a transformer. Music is a transformer not only for man but also for the whole of Nature. The occult science recommends singing as a method of transformation of negative energies into positive. Music uplifts the vibrations of human organism and on the other hand, revives the vital energies. Knowing the power and action of music upon the organism man should sing in all life conditions – being sick or healthy, during difficulties, trials, sufferings. When sic... more »

*Saturated fat 'ISN'T bad for your heart': Major study questions decades of dietary advice* Guidelines urging people to avoid ‘unhealthy’ fat to stave off heart disease are wrong, according to a major study. After decades of advice on the harm done by saturated fat such as butter, scientists have found no evidence of a link with heart problems. A ‘mega’ study which analysed a huge amount of existing data also said so-called healthy polyunsaturated fats, such as sunflower oil, had no general effect on the risk of heart disease. *Music* - the language of creation and its creatures "Running streams, gushing springs, the falling rain, roaring torrents, the ceaseless motion of oceans and seas, the sound of the wind blowing, of leaves rustling, of insects chirping and birds singing… everything in nature is music. And from the dawn of time, it is this natural music that has awakened and sustained human beings’ feeling for music. It has prompted them to express themselves through an instrument or through song, to evoke the important moments of their life, to express their love, their joys and their sorrows. T... more »

"Life is a beautiful, magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish. The trouble is you won't fight. You've given up. But there's something just as inevitable as death. And that's life. Think of the power of the universe- turning the Earth, growing the trees. That's the same power within you- if you'll only have the courage and the will to use it." - Charlie Chaplin, Calvero's answer to Terry's question: "What is there to fight for?" in “Limelight”, (1952)
