Will Running Against The Koch Brothers Help The Democrats In November?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 26 minutes ago
By now you've probably noticed that the Democratic base's antipathy towards the fascist-leaning Koch brothers has been adopted by Harry Reid and is becoming standard fare in Democratic Party strategies against the "Koch-addict" Republicans. If you're wondering what's behind the new-found populism from the Democratic Establishment, Ashley Parker explained it for *NY Times* readers last week. "Democrats," she wrote, "are embarking on a broad effort that aims to unmask the press-shy siblings and portray them, instead, as a pair of villains bent on wrecking progressive politics." Could you live "off the grid"?

Small Footprints at Reduce Footprints - 34 minutes ago
[image: Could you live "off the grid"?]*Could you disconnect?*Have you ever considered living off the grid? The basic idea is to disconnect from the national electrical grid, operating one's home using autonomous systems such as solar or wind power. It sounds nice, independent living which is kinder to the earth. But, in reality, how easy would it be to make the switch? Eco-friendly forms of energy require nature's cooperation. When the sun shines and/or the wind blows, energy flows into batteries and "electrical" needs are met. But when nature doesn't accommodate us, the saved en... more »

West’s Muted Response on Terror Attack in China

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 47 minutes ago
*March 11, 2014* (Tony Cartalucci - New Eastern Outlook) - Saturday March 1, 2014′s horrific terror attack at China’s Kunming railroad station left 29 victims dead and over 100 wounded. The terrorist attack was the work of Uyghur separatists hailing from Western China’s Xinjiang province. The US would only condemn the attack as an act of terror after China accused Washington of applying double standards to its coverage and stance on the incident. However, the US’ failure to initially condemn the attack as terrorism runs deeper than mere superficial double standards applied to a glo... more »

Cronyism and the Transcontinental Railroads

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 2 hours ago
*Anyone promoting or considering the merits of so-called public-private partnerships (PPPs)– a collusion between public force and private profits that is simply an invitation to cronyism, corruption and worse – should examine the tainted history of American railroading in the Gilded Age. Why? Because it’s precisely what PPPs will produce again today. By way of following up this and this, I want to say a couple more things about intersectionality to clear up any misunderstandings - especially as intersectionality has come to be identified with privilege-checking and various forms of radical narcissism. First off, intersectionality can look something like this: It demonstrates that if you're a woman, the poorer you are the more likely you are to be obese as compared to men (there are problems with using the Body Mass Index as a measure, but we'll leave that for another occasion). How Did The Democrats Allow Ohio To Turn Into Such An Electoral Hellhole?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 11 hours ago
Over the weekend, Marilou Johanek took apart the Ohio Republicans' elaborate excuses for strangling voters' access to the polls and concluded that it's just plain old voter suppression. If we rule out cost-cutting, uniformity, and fraud as legitimate excuses to restrict the voting process in Ohio, what other explanations make sense? Why else would Republican lawmakers pass bills, signed into law by Republican Gov. John Kasich, that erect voting hurdles for Ohioans? Why curtail early voting, regulate the mailing of absentee-ballot applications, and make provisional ballots harder ... more »

[image: Housewife Eclectic: DIY Crate Shelf] This is one of those projects I have had finished for years, but have never posted, mostly because I don't love the photos. My bathroom is a pretty shade of blue, and while I love the blue for everyday, taking a picture inside a small, poorly lit space that is painted all blue is never ideal for a photograph. Even though I don't love how the pictures turned out for this project, I love the project itself. We’ll give you four quick reasons: The facts we hear are often wrong. Other key facts get disappeared. When people in *our* tribe make up facts, we tend to applaud them for it. And in a highly tribalized culture, it’s hard to convey basic facts across tribal lines, even if the facts in question are accurate and important. We’ll now offer a fifth, more specialized reason. Robert Reich writes that, in the three decades after World War II, the United States created the largest middle class the world has ever seen: During those years the earnings of the typical American worker doubled, just as the size of the American economy doubled.
