In place of our usual Thursday evening meeting, we will instead be attending what promises to be a fascinating presentation this Wednesday evening by Dr Oliver Hartwich titled *Old world crisis, new world future*, a presentation on how global population changes and economic repolarisation are ushering in a ‘new world order.’ The future will increasingly be dominated by the Asia-Pacific region. What’s the matter with (the term) “rape culture?”

*MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2014* *Valenti opines in the Post:* Jessica Valenti is often featured in the Washington Post’s Sunday Outlook section. Yesterday, she extended a fascinating recent discussion about either 1) the term “rape culture” or 2) the concepts behind the term “rape culture.” The fact that no one seems to know what is actually being discussed shows us something less than great about our emerging “progressive” culture. The current discussion (or non-discussion) started with a cryptic remark by RAINN, which describes itself as “the country’s largest anti-sexual-violence org... more »

*BBC Watch* has published a fascinating account from Sam Green about how he finally convinced the BBC Trust's Editorial Standards Committee to uphold his complaint against the BBC for a *Today *report by Kevin Connolly. Supreme Council Tries To Position Itself As Centrist-Nationalist Party Before Iraq’s 2014 Elections

--> The Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) and its Citizen’s Alliance is attempting to move into another stage of its political career as it prepares for this year’s parliamentary elections. The party was originally formed in Iran to organize pro-Khomeini Iraqi forces on its side during the Iran-Iraq War. Before the 2003 invasion it aligned itself with the United States so that it would gain a seat in the post-Saddam government that the Americans would put together. Poor Robert Peston is forced to admit that: 'This leads to two stupidly obvious thoughts. First, it would be wrong to characterise the recovery as debt-fuelled. Second, with austerity rolling relentlessly on this year, and GDP at market prices likely to keep rising faster than private sector debts, 2014 should be a year in which the overall leverage or indebtedness of the British economy falls pretty sharply.' [image: 335056]*March 31, 2014 *(Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - Since 2011, Syria has been the target of an attempted foreign-backed regime change. Riding on the momentum of the US-engineered “Arab Spring,” protesters took to the streets across Syria, serving as cover for armed militants the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia – on record – had been preparing since at least as early as 2007. It was in Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh’s 2007 article, “The Redirection: Is the Administration’s new policy benefiting our enemies in the war on terrorism?” that prophetically stated (emph... more »

MB and I just watched this film. It's a great one and we highly recommend it. Legendary New York disc jockey Bob Fass revolutionized late night FM radio by serving as a cultural hub for music, politics and audience participation for nearly 50 years. Long before today's innovations in social media, Fass utilized the airwaves for mobilization, encouraging luminaries and ordinary listeners to talk openly, taking the program in surprising directions.

The Internet Party: Mostly Clowns

[image: image] The magic of German megalomania continues to transform journalists into either sourpusses, sycophants or clowns. Mostly clowns. Last week was another political and journalistic circus, with both DotCom and the commentariat turning themselves into clowns. The circus started with Dotcom’s “confession” he owned a book, and continued with his party “launch.” A “soft” launch, you’d have to say, since virtually the only thing we heard about it was that DotCom owned both a book and an MP. Why is it that I've spent my adult life believing that the purpose of the IMF has been to help indebted countries out of debt? Whereas its true purpose has been to force those countries to privatize their profit-making sectors, allowing them to be bought off by speculators and global corporations, while forcing the government to cut old-age pensions, government services, government employment, and subsidies to the rest of the populace in order to pay back the IMF for the money that they promised but never really deliver, because the Western banks are given the money (something you surely won't learn from the presstitute "mainstream" media).
