#optout contemplation 2011: This is how it happened.

Timothy D. Slekar at @ THE CHALK FACE - 31 minutes ago
For as long as I can remember I have had serious issues with high stakes standardized tests. However, it wasn’t until after NCLB was in full swing and my son started to dread going to school that I actually contemplated doing something about it. I know that sounds kind of funny coming from me—a full […]

Rob Zerban And Patrick Hope Won The Blue America End-of-the Quarter Contest

Dennis Kucinich congratulating Patrick Hope on his straw poll win in Arlington last week It makes sense that Rob and Patrick won. Both have strong teams and both have won elections in the past and understand how to communicate effectively with voters. Both teams were in it to win from the first day and both teams sent out numerous, well-crafted e-mails and worked the social media outlets to turn out their voters. Blue America sent each campaign a $1,000 check this afternoon. The "contest" was to see which campaigns could persuade the most donors to contribute through ActBlue in a 48... more »

"Seal-fie"

Way Way Up at Fort McMurray Adventures - 1 hour ago
This post is re-post from my Nunavut blog that I thought I'd share here. It never hurts to have more than one platform to get a message out. Having lived in both Nunavut and Alberta, I'm used to running into stories about celebs spouting off against issues involving seal hunting and the oil sands. Issues they aren't necessarily that educated about. I'm not saying that such celebrities are necessarily stupid, but rather ignorant, in the sense that what they espouse is quite often mis-informed. Which is why when I read about a group of Iqaluit residents starting a seal-fie campaig... more »

"Be Like a River" by Paulo Coelho “A river never passes the same place twice,” says a philosopher. “Life is like a river,” says another philosopher, and we draw the conclusion that this is the metaphor that comes closest to the meaning of life. Consequently, it is always good to remember during all the year to come: *A]* We are always doing things for the first time. While we move between our source (birth) to our destination (death), the landscape will always be new. We should face these novelties with joy, not with fear – because it is useless to fear what cannot be avoided. A riv... more »

Andrew Nikiforuk writes that petropolitics are behind what is going on in Ukraine: Russia, a true petro state, sits on one-fifth of the world's natural gas supply. About one-third of the natural gas burnt in Europe comes from Russia via Ukraine, which once housed the Russian capital centuries ago. In addition, Russia almost exports as much oil as Saudi Arabia. Not surprisingly, Putin gets his political mojo from oil and gas revenues just as Margaret Thatcher once secured her power base on proceeds from the North Sea. Nearly 50 per cent of Russia's total budget depends on the sale ... more »

A New Day Dawnin' In South Carolina? Not Likely

The only state that has *both* Senate seats up in November is South Carolina. That's because Lindsey Graham has served his 6 year term and is up for reelection for one seat and because Jim DeMint resigned and was replaced with a gubernatorial appointment, right-wing extremist Tim Scott, for the other seat. There will be a special election to fill out the rest of DeMint's term. We've been concentrating on the Graham seat since he makes such a flamboyant target out of himself-- and because 6 hilarious crackpot teabaggers are running against him, plus a Democrat, Jay Stamper, who has... more »

WHITEWASHING THE TRUTH

The hypocrisy of Obama is beyond imagination. The fact that he feels he has to make excuses for US attacks on Iraq, Yugoslavia, or Libya indicates though that much of the world is not buying what the Obama team is selling. It's quite sad really that this man is reduced to groveling on the world stage - "The US attacks are not as bad as Russia's referendums." In the larger scheme of things the US is finished as the 'shining light on the hill'. The bulb has burned out.

The latter, Sally Morgan, in particular, does something very emotional with her voice when she's 'relaying a message from the other side'. Now, I don't even believe in an afterlife (I certainly have no first-hand knowledge of such) and her voice-trick might be a *heartless con-man's technique* but I don't care, it really works and brings the tears to my eyes every time. bob somerby at the daily howler - 1 day ago
*WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014* *Salon gets wonderfully thorough:* At the start of the week, we were puzzled by some of the work we found at Salon. Our most significant puzzlement concerned a piece by Katie McDonough. McDonough started this-a-way concerning the gender wage gap: MCDONOUGH (3/23/14): *There is something bizarre about celebrating the “top five states for women’s salaries” when women who live in these five states are still making, on average, 90 percent or less of what their male colleagues earn.* It’s not wrong, it’s just … strange. Women in the District of Columbia came ... more »

WHAT WE KNOW

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
*THE REALITY, RISKS AND RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE* The overwhelming evidence of human-caused climate change documents both current impacts with significant costs and extraordinary future risks to society and natural systems. The scientific community has convened conferences, published reports, spoken out at forums and proclaimed, through statements by virtually every national scientific academy and relevant major scientific organization-including the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) - that climate change puts the well-being of people of all nations at ri... more »

“Why a New Depression Would Be Good For Us”

*“Why a New Depression Would Be Good For Us” * by Bill Bonner “The Dow rose 91 points yesterday. Gold was flat – after getting battered last week. Today, we go even farther into the unknown... beyond eventually and past sooner or later... to what happens next. Specifically, we don't think central bankers are going to take the end of the world lying down. They've got tricks up their sleeves. These are not new tricks. They've been used many times in many different forms. But they've never been used on the scale we now foresee. But before we begin guessing, let us tell you a bit about... more »

Good Advice to Bad Agents

jurassicpork at Welcome Back to Pottersville - 1 day ago
If you're a serious writer like me, then you've already been to countless literary agent websites. And if you've been to more than two or three, you'll click the backspace button with the growing uneasy feeling that, while they don't look alike, they all begin to sound alike. British literary agents, as is typical of the British, tend to be more civil and polite in their submissions pages. However, their American analogs across the pond tend to be insufferably arch, arrogant and sound as if they're ready to reject your next brilliant opus completely out of hand just for yo... more »

Parent Suspended and Threatened with Arrest for Opt Out Notices

Kris Nielsen at @ THE CHALK FACE - 1 day ago
Not too long ago, some parents from the small oil town of Hobbs, New Mexico, told me that some middle school kids had been handing out test refusal forms to their peers for the upcoming state tests. The principal, unsurprisingly, collected the remaining opt out forms and asked the students to stop passing them around. […]

Obamacare: Kevin Drum asks a sensible question!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 1 day ago
*WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014* *Concerning those horror tales:* On Monday, Kevin Drum asked a fairly good question: Why have we heard so many stories about people getting screwed by Obamacare? More precisely, why have we heard so many *bogus* stories of this type? Drum’s question was inspired by a 1500-word piece in Sunday’s Los Angeles Times. In that piece, Michael Hiltzik wrote about Rita Rizzo, age 60, who owns a management consulting firm for nonprofit groups with her husband, Lou Vincent, 64. Vincent suffers from several medical conditions. For that reason, he hadn’t been a... more »

John Thompson at @ THE CHALK FACE - 1 day ago
Rick Hess, in “A Small Request for My Friends at Gates,” was kind enough to urge the Gates Foundation to consider three of my research proposals in order to better estimate the bias resulting from the inability of value-added added models to control for peer effects. Donn Marten at Carrying a Flag - 1 day ago
Oleksandr Muzychko aka Sashko Bily of the extremist Right Sector group that was instrumental in backing the US backed coup d’etat in Kiev was shot dead by police yesterday. Has the Night of the Long Knives arrived? Has “Yats” been given the order to clean up his unelected regime to make the country safe for corporate plunder? There are conflicting stories about the killing of Muzychnko, one being that the brutal thug was gunned down while trying to escape what is officially described as a "special forces operation" that took place at a cafe in the city of Rivne in western Ukraine.... more »
