12:04am MSTLev Okuň: 1929-2015
As Yuri told us, Lev Borisovič Okuň died on November 23rd at age of 86. As a high school kid, I've read some books and texts he wrote (in Russian) and not only before the fall of communism, he has always been one of the symbols of the "contemporary" particle physics in the Soviet bloc and its ability to interact with the best particle physics in the world. And after the fall of communism, he may have been one of the best Russian physicists who stayed in Russia. He may have influenced me in various ways. His book (or books?) covered things like grand unification at a semi-popular lev... more »

"Summon Your Aliveness: Being Fully Present"
*"Summon Your Aliveness: Being Fully Present"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "When we live fully in the moment there is an aliveness that comes easily. When we are fully present, we offer our whole selves to whatever it is that we are doing. Our attention, our integrity, and our energy are all focused in the moment and on the task at hand. This is a powerful experience, and when we are in this state, we feel completely alive and invigorated. This kind of aliveness comes easily when we are absorbed in work or play that we love, but it is available to us in every moment, and we can ... more »
The Poet: Mary Oliver, "Mysteries, Yes"
*"Mysteries, Yes"* "Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous to be understood. How grass can be nourishing in the mouths of the lambs. How rivers and stones are forever in allegiance with gravity while we ourselves dream of rising. How two hands touch and the bonds will never be broken. How people come, from delight or the scars of damage, to the comfort of a poem. Let me keep my distance, always, from those who think they have the answers. Let me keep company always with those who say "Look!" and laugh in astonishment, and bow their heads." ~ Mary Oliver

Atheist Richard Dawkins Says ‘To Hell With The Muslim Culture’
Academic non-believer Richard Dawkins has caused controversy by saying that Muslims should not be given a “free pass” because they are not a “protected species.” Dawkins has got fed up with having to watch Muslim women wearing Burkas in public and has stood up for his thought that came to him freely, by saying: ‘To hell with their culture’ and that Islam should not be confused with a race. STOPPED MAKING SENSE: Einstein and the plastic giraffe!
*MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2015Part 1—Days of non-explanation:* We heard some really bad "explanations" over the Thanksgiving break. For starters, consider what happened last Friday. A young lady who's three years old was happily banging us on the head with a plastic giraffe. Challenged on her wayward conduct, she offered a shaky explanation: *She* wasn't hitting Uncle Bob. Her toy giraffe was doing it! Her 9-year-old sister quickly informed her that her "explanation" didn't make sense. But so what? Like a budding Candidate Trump, she doggedly stuck with her story! The plastic giraf... more »

Saddam’s Faith Campaign & Iraq’s Tribes Two Pillars Of The Insurgency, Interview With Iraq Historian Prof. Amatzia Baram
Iraq’s insurgency has drawn from many different groups in Iraq, but two major ones were the tribes and Salafis. Many sheikhs turned against the United States in 2003 due to the actions of the military and the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA). In the 1990s Saddam Hussein started his Faith Campaign, which led to the growth of Salafism in the country. That ideology fueled many to join Islamist insurgent groups later on. To help explain these two phenomena is Dr. Amatzia Baram Professor Emeritus at the Department of History of the Middle East and Director of the Centre for Iraq S... more »

UN climate talks: the ritual
The most powerful climate alarmists among politicians – and you may find such deluded people in almost all countries of the world – have gathered for another meeting in Paris. Josh gave us a wonderful new cartoon: The Global Warming Policy Foundation has collected lots of quotes from the newspapers that show that it is always the same ritual, indeed. The seven aspects of the ritual could have been seen in Bali 2007, Poznań 2008, Copenhagen 2009, Cancun 2010, Durban 2011, Doha 2012, Warsaw 2013, Lima 2014, and Paris 2015, and mostly at many meetings before 2007, too. It appears that this young scholar felt offended because a homily on love made him feel bad for not showing love! In his mind, the speaker was wrong for making him, and his peers, feel uncomfortable. A Sad Reminder of What Anti-Terror Legislation Really Is For
Prez. Barack Hussein Obama, the aider of ISIS, the protector of Daesh, the water carrier for Islamic Terrorists, is using undemocratic anti-terror legislation to not go after the finances of ISIS barbarians and their state backers but the finances of heroic whistleblowers in his own administration. This is how evil governments can be. The tyrannical use of anti-terrorism legislation was entirely predictable. We have known all along that anti-terror laws that were introduced in Western countries in the wake of false flag terrorism attacks, specifically 9/11, would be used to target b... more »
