continues relatively unabated. US border officials recently busted a ring

are some images of these prized bladders). The amount of bladders they

What Mattered This Week?
Back to basics: the employment report. Nothing great, but no disaster.
We're certainly not having anything like Clinton's peace-and-prosperity
second term, but at least for the moment it seems we're more in the
direction of getting there than we are moving towards George W. Bush's
second term. Even if there doesn't seem much hope of actually getting there
within four years.
It's good that Obama finally got around to choosing a Secretary of
Commerce, but much harder to imagine how a Secretary of Commerce can matter.
What do you have? What do you think mattered this week?

This is a truly frightening video. NASA has modeled rainfall projections
and it's very clear - if it weren't already - that food shortages from
drought are going to lead to famine and violence. Since many staple crops
are distributed through global trade, the effects will ricochet around the
world leaving aid-dependant countries wanting, and prices soaring in
developed nations, with the poorest starving first. I'm reasonably certain
that NASA's models don't include the fact that trees are dying prematurely,
at an exponentially rapid rate, from tropospheric ozone - which is going t... more »

What To Do About A GOP That Has Devolved Into Intransigent Extremism?
Joe Conason takes on the moronic Beltway adage that "everyone is equally at
fault" for the nation's problems by pointing out that the most salient fact
in American political life is (and for some time has been) the intransigent
extremism of the Republican Party.
Whatever the punditocracy may imagine, there is no way for Obama to force

There are plenty of speculation and great leaps here but what it all comes

Earth's Core 1,000 Degrees Hotter Than Expected
This is information that matters because we can now determine melt points
for other elements at similar pressures. All molecules disassociate down
there and proper modeling needs accurate transition points.
Recall that the key element at the final point of disassociation will be
elemental carbon and I suspect that we actually have a working layer of it.
Thus our diamond pipes are really carbon pipes rapidly burning their way
upward. This also establishes a natural slip plane for the crust itself and
allows the crust itself to remain in permanent balance.

The Smallest Man In Canada
Michael Harris writes that Stephen Harper is the Wizard of Wrath:
Just as in the movie, our Wizard is playing the bully with the big stick to
the very end. In big things and little ones, the movie Wizard was nothing

Consent is not vitiated in all circumstances of sexual assault causing bodily harm

Iraq’s Communist Party Celebrates May Day 2013
Iraq’s Communist Party used to be one of the largest and most powerful in
the country. Under the Baath it was mercilessly hunted down with much of
its leadership assassinated. Since the 2003 fall of Saddam Hussein it has
struggled mightily to rebuild itself. As part of that effort for the last
several years it has held marches on May Day throughout Iraq. These are
pictures of the Communist Party celebrating the event in Baghdad’s Firdos
Square, May 1, 2013.

Oh why can't we have leaderly leadership
Jon Favreau is tired of hearing the whinging about why won't Obama lead the
pack of GOP lunatics to sanity. Worth a read in full but here's the most
important point that our insidery inside media doesn't seem to ever get to:
Today, a minority of senators can kill bipartisan legislation that is
supported by a majority of their colleagues. And they frequently do. In the
House, the speaker alone can kill bipartisan legislation that is supported
by a majority of his colleagues. And he frequently does.
They do this not by changing minds with persuasion, but by blocking it with

El Pendejo Is Making Texas Look Even More Foolish With Demand For Apology
By Manifesto Joe
Gov. Rick "El Pendejo" Perry has already done plenty in his 63 years on
this planet to make Texas, and Texans, look foolish. His absent-minded,
tongue-tied participation in the 2012 GOP presidential race was
embarrassing enough.
Now he's demanding an apology from the *Sacramento Bee* for a Jack Ohman
political cartoon. Ohman's cartoon was something like this: In one panel,
Perry is shown standing at a podium, next to signs proclaiming low
regulations and low taxes, saying something like, "Business in Texas is
booming." The next panel, on the right, depicts the dead... more »

Check Out Solar Impulse, Live, Online
Think of it as an aerial solar panel. The aircraft, Solar Impulse, is now
winging its way across the United States. It's currently on the San
Fransisco to Phoenix leg of the trip. You can watch it live at
live.solarimpulse.com
Right now it's at 15,900 feet with an airspeed of 26 knots that translates,
with tail wind, to 42 knots groundspeed. Onboard batteries enable Solar
Impulse to fly at night but the lightweight airframe is fragile and heavy
weather must be avoided.
Your Absolute Value - "Spend Like a Boss"

true, to a place of hoping it could be true, to knowing it is true. You

is you.
The whole notion of cash was a set-up. A brilliant device used to enslave
and de-value you. It is no wonder the beings who devised this plan were
referred to as “gods”. With the creation of ownership, the game was on. It
is an old game, as evidenced by discoveries of hoards of ancient priceless
artifacts along with stories of servants and royal... more »

One of the things brought up was a new study by the Institute for Policy
Studies and Campaign for America's Future showing that the CEOs behind "Fix
the Debt" have benefited from tax breaks for executive compensation to the
tune of about $1 billion in 2009-11, for just those companies. This tax
break lets companies count pay using stock options -- which doesn't cost
the companies anything -- as if it were cash pay and thus deduct it against
corporate income. According to Citizens for Tax Justice (via Common Dreamsand Huffi... more »
The Future of Luxury Cars = Hybrid Hydogen

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW or the Wobblies) is an

The IWW promotes the concept of "One Big Union," contends that all workers

should be abolished. They are known for the Wobbly Shop model of workplace
democracy, in which workers elect their managers and other forms of
grassroots democracy (self-management) are implemented. IWW membership does
