The Bureau of Land Management released its revised rules last week for hydraulic fracturing — or fracking — on Indian and federal public lands.   • Please read the linked article from Civil Liberties Australia (CLA) carefully and let me know your thoughts. I have provided the following commentary.

    CLA's policy guidelines state:
    --------------------------------
    We stand for people's rights, and go in to bat for everyone's civil liberties.

    We monitor police and security forces, and the actions and inaction of politicians. We review proposed legislation, to make it better, and keep watch on government departments and agencies.

    We work to keep Australia the free and open society it has traditionally been, where you can be yourself without undue interference from 'authority'.

    It may surprise you to discover that, in an apparent contradiction with their own guidelines, CLA actually supports MANDATORY VACCINATION.

    Incredibly, CLA would endorse NEW legislation which would completely overturn the freedom of choice that parents now have to decide which (in any) vaccines they will give to their children.

    They rationalise their agenda of fascist intolerance through a series of warped logical steps.

    STEP 1
    ----------------------------------------
    Vaccination is an unusual issue, because the parent confronts a decision that has immediate potential impact on his/her own child, but also an equivalent potential impact on all other children the child frequently comes into contact with: siblings, cousins, friends, playmates, pre-school companions, schoolmates. For that reason, the usual straight line question: “Does freedom of choice apply?” is nuanced with an overlay of “What are the individual’s responsibilities to other children?” and “What is the responsibility of the state?”

    They begin by stating that vaccination is a special case and cannot be handled in the same way as other CLA topics, due to this delicate question of individual versus collective rights. This is actually a classic eugenicist/fascist argument. Sterilising mental patients was rationalised for EXACTLY same reasons, eg: "the State must act to protect society from the damaging effects of bringing children into the world who may grow up to be misfits or criminals".

    STEP 2
    ----------------------------------------
    The child has a right to health, independent of the right of a parent to adopt measures for his/her child that accord with the parent’s view.

    Here they are invoking the "rights of the child", implying that failure to vaccinate is somehow infringing those rights.

    STEP 3
    ----------------------------------------
    CLA’s position allows children (and their parents) to make their own decision on some types of vaccines, especially those that come later in life, such as the HPV[1] vaccine (which isn’t life saving in the same way Hep B, tetanus or whooping cough vaccines can be). It also allows parents a way to opt-out of ‘new’ and less-tested vaccines such as seasonal influenza.

    Here they are "softening" the argument a little, allowing parents a little bit of leeway, but defining that in the vaguest of terms. What does "less-tested" mean, and who is to be the judge of that? It is as though somebody threw in this paragraph just to make the article appear less fascist in tone.

    STEP 4
    ----------------------------------------
    CLA believes the rights of all children in a community/locale generally prevail over the rights of a local individual child, especially in the case of life-saving vaccinations such as Hep B, diphtheria, measles, mumps and whooping cough. We believe this is the case because scientific and medical evidence shows that vaccination is safe and effective and that, when a child contracts a “customary” childhood disease, vaccinated children resist it much better than children not vaccinated.

    Here they throw away all pretence of acknowledging alternative viewpoints and basically claim exclusive access to moral authority and truth. They are also invoking the concept of the State as a kind of "uber-parent", as if it were a "person" rather than a collection of bureaucracies, each overseen by individuals with varying levels of critical thinking capacity and scientific training.

    STEP 5
    ----------------------------------------
    Turning to the right of the state to intervene and make rules and regulations, as well as laws, on behalf of children generally, Civil Liberties Australia believes that it is the state’s responsibility, beyond its clear right, to enforce vaccination of children with vaccines that are scientifically and medically proven to be sound, effective and overwhelmingly beneficial to children and the state.

    Finally the other shoe drops... Once again they are invoking the State-As-Parent meme, but here they actually revoke the mandate of CLA to limit government power and support individual rights. Here they are calling for the ROLL BACK of individual rights!

    Note the use of the word "enforce" - this is important. "Enforce" is a strong word with a wide ranging application. "Enforce" can in practice mean anything from fines to arrest to imprisonment and child removal.

    STEP 5
    ----------------------------------------
    This responsibility to act proactively on behalf of the whole community applies, CLA believes, even if there is a statistical possibility of a child being infected with a disease through the vaccinations process. [Bill Rowlings says: I have met and spoken at length with a now-40yo woman who was the ‘1 in a million’ child who caught polio from a polio vaccination in India: she remains a vocal supporter of all children being immunised against polio, because of the benefits to the other 999,999 who did not get polio.]
    ----------------------------------------

    The last twist of the knife. Even if there is a possibility that a vaccine might HARM your child, they insist that the procedure should still be "enforced". This effectively absolves the State from all blame, even where harm is proven, because of the "greater good" created by the enforced program of compliance.

    My concern is that with an organisation such as the CLA firmly on the side of mandatory vaccination and even calling for an INCREASE in the states coercive powers, we really are in a very dire situation in Australia.

    I think the CLA needs to be challenged.
