You wouldn’t know it now, but Islam was once a historically moderate and
intellectual religion. Yes, true story. The seat of science and
civilisation a thousand years ago was in the Muslim world—largely because
the Muslim world had become the repository of Greek manuscripts that would
otherwise have been destroyed by Europe’s barbarians.
Aristotle and his works are important leading players in this historical
drama. In a parallel to the story of how Aristotle’s own manuscripts were
rescued from destruction by savages, scholars at Timbuktu’s Ahmed Baba

Chen Shui-bian back to the DPP?
*Snack time in the alleys across from NTU.*
Several months ago I asked foreigners who were wasting their time appealing
for the medical parole of Chen Shui-bian to stop and think about what they

Were Chen ever to get out, he would go back to seeking the limelight,
encouraging splits within the DPP in order to aggrandize his own faction
and friends, and so on. Both the China Post and Taipei Times pieces
essentially say the same thing even though they disagree. When Chen gets

Sometimes news stories just set off all kinds of alarm bells.
Honduras has apparently learned from Japan’s bogus scientific whaling

The Honduran government has announced a Queen conch fishery, justified as

It looks more like a way around restrictions on the fishery.

RESOLUTION TO THE PALESTINE-ISRAEL CONUNDRUM: FOUR OPTIONS – ONLY ONE VIABLE
For decades the resolution to the Palestine-Israel conundrum has proved
elusive and the reason for that has been staring us in the face for years.
The fact is; the elitists of both sides want all of the lands that were

Gone to the dogs
One of the best and worst things about life in Copan Ruinas is all the
dogs that roam the streets.
What's bad is that many of them are sick and starving, and at endless
risk of being the next victims of the municipally organized purges that are

What's good is that a dog lover can gain a whole lot of new friends just
by putting out bowls of dog food and water on a regular basis. I love the
many dogs that pass by our house every morning now for a snack and some
affection. It's not easy to make human friends i... more »

One Small Point on ACA Implementation
I have a post up at Plum Line about a familiar topic to regular readers
here -- that Affordable Care Act polling now is unlikely to predict much
about how people will react to the law once it's implemented.
I'll add one more point, however. There's a possible press bias involved
which might help the ACA. For the most part, the people who are helped the
most the Obamacare -- people who did not have health insurance, wanted it,
and will be able to get it through the exchanges, in many cases with
subsidies that really will make it affordable -- are not opinion leaders.

Americans are being divided / separated - even more so than in the past , from Law Enforcement in their communities , protesters are being deemed and treated as domestic terrorists , the heavy arm of the State becomes an every day ordinary set of circumstances , violence is becoming mind numbingly and casually a norm ! Are 'settlements' the main or even just the primary block to peace?
' An average reader of this article would go away convinced that building
in communities in Judea & Samaria is the main issue preventing a peace
agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. So let's take a look at just
some of what the BBC has to airbrush out of its 'peace process' narrative,
as presented in this article and many others, in order to promote that
chimera to its audiences.
1. The Palestinian Authority's insistence on the 'right of return' for
refugees: a scenario which would bring about the end of Israel as a Jewish
state.
2. The Palestinian Authority's refusal to... more »

Nearly Two-Thirds of Britons Expect a Serious Clash Between British (sic) Muslims | EuropeNews
' Nearly two-thirds of people believe there will be a 'clash of
civilisations' between British Muslims and white Britons in the wake of the

The number of those who believe such a clash is inevitable has increased by

There has also been a small increase in the proportion of people who
believe British Muslims pose a serious threat to democracy, up to 34% on
Thursday and Friday from 30% in November 2012, according to the YouGov

Is Adam Schiff Changing His Tune-- Or Just Playing Smart Politics In A New District That's WAY More Progressive Than He Is?
In 2000, I was especially excited about defeating radical right freshman

Economist and white-collar criminologist, Bill Black, reports on the recent Senate grilling of Apple. He begins "Senator Levin continues to do virtually the only real investigation being done in the United States of the elite entities. Memorial Day, 2013
This is a post I'd written four years ago for Memorial Day 2009. At
the time, I didn't think anything would change, certainly not under Obama,
who, just as Bush had with Iraq, had his little surge in Afghanistan, an
11½ year-long boondoggle that by conspicuous relief almost makes Iraq look
like the Revolutionary War.
Even moreso than avarice and racial prejudice, the one facet of
humankind that has remained unaltered is our propensity for waging war on
each other. When even armchair liberals at the Rand Corporation or

I've been rather distracted the past week, I must admit. But I have a
pretty good reason as I've been considering heading back to school.
Initially, I figured if I was going to undertake a Masters degree it would
be later in life, "just for the heck of it", as I'd say. I've been out of
academia and any serious research work for a dozen years now. Once I
graduated for the 3rd (and what I thought was the final) time I needed to
get out into the workforce to start paying off all those student loans

Just One Life
Sometimes, in some amoral struggle between two cynical nation-states, an
eloquent person can say how seeing how one life was cruelly snuffed-out by
the other nation-state was what made them choose the other nation-state.
The valid idea is that one human life unnecessarily snuffed-out is a crime.
We should always believe that. But too lately, when a life is snuffed-out
in a worthless cause, ... many Canadians feel unapologetic in saying that
history will be the judge and that "there's plenty more where *that* came
from."
But if even one Canadian citizen gets tortured, it's too much. ... more »
Economist Umair Haque Uses Twitter To Dissect Conservatism
Most people who know who author and economist Umair Haque is, probably know
him for his coverage of modern capitalism at the *Harvard Business Review*.
But he's also a voracious twitter. This (partial) series of tweets
yesterday is one of the best uses of Twitter I've ever seen:
It would be great to see Mike Lux put his book on the nature of American
conservatism, The Progressive Revolution: How the Best in America Came to Be,
into twitter form.
Changes to Reduce Footprints
As some of you know, Google is soon to unveil a new system for rating the
value of a blog. It has come to my attention that some of the ways that I
use to promote others is actually going to hurt them in the new ranking
protocol. We all work so hard on our blogs ... it's a shame to be penalized
for something like having your link shared on other sites.
So, I'm discontinuing the Meet & Greet Monday feature. I haven't been able
to determine if having your blog's address in that "linky" lowers your rank
per Google but I don't want to take chances. If you have a link to Meet &
Greet on ... more »
Boston - a look at still unexplained mysteries , including a review of the shifting official versions and contradictions impacting the truth regarding the shootings of MIT Police Officer Collier ( killed - may he rest in peace ) and Police Officer Richard Donohue ( seriously wounded but not killed fortunately - friendly fire the cause ? ) ......... Other unresolved mysteries still abound.....how many security outfits were providing security ( besides Craft ) and what were their missions .... JFK Library Fire - what was the deal with that anyway .....death of Tamerlan Tsarnaev mysteries.....how does a massive sweep in a City underlockdown just happen to miss the block where Dzhokar Tsarnaev just happened to be hiding out ..... And how about the capture of the second brother - did that make much sense , on the whole, I mean really.........what was the real deal regarding the brothers - were the radicals portrayed or just convenient patsies who have largely been silenced on the whole......And what about the shady Uncle - where does he fit in all of this ? Ponder away as the media has no interest in digging any deeper into this one ?
While there isn't a desire to dig deep by the media , cowed as they are ,
question about Boston still exist and inquiring minds want to know the
answers....

If the whole world protests against Monsanto and BigMedia refuses to cover
it, did it happen? Maybe not in the United States but the rest of the world

The man who thought psychiatrists were nuts
*Guest post by Doug French*
This week is a big one in the psychiatry world. The American Psychiatric
Association released the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). What is now a massive 1,000-page tome
doesn't come out very often, but when it does, as Johns Hopkins
distinguished professor Paul McHugh writes, the book "shape[s] what
psychiatrists say and do with their patients."
Back in the old days, say, in 1952, when the DSM-1 was a spiral-bound
pamphlet, people were shy; now they have “social anxiety disorder.” People

The recent collapse of a garment factory building in Bangladesh, resulting

building. It is demanded that they assume responsibility for working
conditions in the factories that supply them and not deal with factories

In hot water
So, you're on a well, you can do things. Here's one: put a wye (with gate
valve) on the line to the house and pipe some of your water to the inlet
pipe of a discarded (but non-leaking) hot water heater.
The heater has had half its jacket and insulation peeled back and is lying
on its side with some unobstructed southern exposure. The pop valve is on
the uphill side so it can bleed off some air for more heat efficiency. A
box has been constructed round the tank, partially filled with yet more
insulation, with a window parked over it, a la solar cooker.
