Death by the barracks
This is not a post about the killing of a soldier, about which there is little to say, nor about the 'double standards' in the use of the term 'terrorism'. It is about how the notoriously pliable category of 'terrorism' has been put to work in developing fables about our racial selves, about 'Britishness' and its others.
Through 'race', social relations, events and bodies are symbolised and come to be seen as 'racial'. When the victim of yesterday's killing was revealed to be a soldier, now known to be a fusilier who had served in Helmand, sections of the media instantly began to seek a Muslim connection.
"You think politicians are going to die? No, it's going to be the average guy - like you - and your children. So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so you can all live in peace." While a Muslim man spoke those words, they do not constitute a religious diatribe but rather a straightforward, and perfectly coherent, political message.
Before the body of Drummer Lee Rigby was cold, his mutilation was
already being registered, not simply as a killing, but as 'terrorism'.
The Telegraph refers to the perpetrators as "Al Qaeda-inspired Islamic terrorists", situating the attacks as a 'return' of the 'terrorism' last seen in July 2005. The Guardian likewise referred to the killers' "typical Al Qaeda rhetoric". The Independent warns us, citing a former Flying Squad Commander, of an emerging "new type of terror threat". David Cameron is reportedly attending an emergency meeting of Cobra, presumably intending to contrive a 'tough' new response to 'terrorism'.
Glenn Greenwald
has done the usual sterling work in anatomising this response. Without
duplicating his points, a simple comparison suffices to convey it: of
all the freelance racists who have murdered black people in the UK over
the years, sometimes in groups and sometimes individually, how many have
been characterised as 'terrorism'? And it seems worth asking what is
left of the term 'terrorism' once one has discounted for the consistent
inconsistency of its usage? No one can agree on a definition. No
serious scholarly book on the subject dares venture a definition that
isn't either weighed down with caveats or ultimately self-cancelling.
Suffice to say that in some cases, violence with a clear political and
symbolic purpose is classified as 'terrorism', and in some cases it is
not, and there appears to be no explicit, principled distinction between
those which are and those which are not.
The distinctions which are offered, say between 'terrorism' and 'just
war', are pure ideology. Talal Asad points out that there are typically
three such distinctions offered. First, a just war is fought in pursuit
of virtuous, liberal, humane and democratic ends, while terrorism is
waged only for nefarious, fanatical ends. Second, a just war is
restrained, seeking to avoid civilian casualties, while terrorism is
unrestrained mayhem that if anything actively seeks out a civilian body
count. Third, a just war takes place only at the last minute, after all
alternatives have been exhausted, while terrorism is capricious, and
barely needs provocation. It goes without saying that this is pure
ideology: no serious examination of the course of, say, the 'war on terror', would bear out any of these claims.

Just One Life
Sometimes, in some amoral struggle between two cynical nation-states, an
eloquent person can say how seeing how one life was cruelly snuffed-out by
the other nation-state was what made them choose the other nation-state.
The valid idea is that one human life unnecessarily snuffed-out is a crime.
We should always believe that. But too lately, when a life is snuffed-out
in a worthless cause, ... many Canadians feel unapologetic in saying that
history will be the judge and that "there's plenty more where *that* came
from."

As some of you know, Google is soon to unveil a new system for rating the
value of a blog. It has come to my attention that some of the ways that I
use to promote others is actually going to hurt them in the new ranking
protocol. We all work so hard on our blogs ... it's a shame to be penalized
for something like having your link shared on other sites.
So, I'm discontinuing the Meet & Greet Monday feature. I haven't been able
to determine if having your blog's address in that "linky" lowers your rank

In hot water
So, you're on a well, you can do things. Here's one: put a wye (with gate
valve) on the line to the house and pipe some of your water to the inlet
pipe of a discarded (but non-leaking) hot water heater.
The heater has had half its jacket and insulation peeled back and is lying
on its side with some unobstructed southern exposure. The pop valve is on
the uphill side so it can bleed off some air for more heat efficiency. A
box has been constructed round the tank, partially filled with yet more

Thoughts from Readers
I am very frustrated by the lack of collective response to Fukushima. If
the plant is lost in flames then we will see nuclear dominoes fall in an
unprecedented nuclear extinction event. Yet it seems as if no one is doing
anything or paying attention to the most pressing crisis humanity has ever
confronted (in written history, at least).

How big is media surveillance under Obama
I'm as unhappy as the next guy about government surveillance on journalists
*and* private citizens but I sure wish the media had been this focused when
the Bush administration was doing it illegally. Even the NYT is verging on

'Sunday' reflections
Maybe it's being a Northerner but, despite the BBC's relocation to Salford,
I can't help feeling that there's a massive disconnect between the BBC's
London elite way of thinking and that of most of the people I know - a
feeling amplified by this week's horrific murder in Woolwich.
A piece by Trevor Barnes on this morning's *Sunday* (Radio 4) reported on
how faith communities in Greenwich are responding to the murder. The report
was strongly insistent in its projection of the message that they are all

I've said that the fate of the immigration bill depends on whether
mainstream conservatives in the House Republican conference want it to pass

Fourth Amendment protection to electronic communications, which if
successful would be a major move to protect online privacy.
This comes after it was revealed that both the IRS and the FBI claimed they

(CDC) says that 20 percent of American children now have mental health
issues.

Kurt and I went to two more games in May. Both of them, the Tigers lost
and we are beginning to think we are cursed. LOL. Both were fun days
w/gorgeous weather though, and we had a really nice time regardless of the

Almost the end of May and I have not posted once! Whoops!
May has been pretty busy, but good.
I turned 36, which was kinda odd for me. I think 36 sounds so much more
close to 40 than 35 did! But, I am OK with it, it is just kinda odd. I

We've had another outstanding day of seeing cave paintings, an entirely
different experience that complemented the other two cave tours.
We left Santillana del Mar early and drove on back-country roads to the
town of Puente Viesgo, to see the caves known as El Castillo and Las
Monedas. The countryside here is beautiful - lush green hills dotted with
red-roofed stone houses, groups of cows and sheep and horses grazing here
and there. The rural routes wind through little town centres with the usual

There's a new judge on the DC Circuit, the first one nominated by Barack
Obama. That's going to matter. I'll add that the developments over
nominations and Senate reform matter more generally, although it's still
too early to know how they will turn out.
I'm inclined to think that the McCain/Cruz feud won't turn out to matter
much. I certainly don't think it matters whether or not Congress goes to a
formal conference committee on the budget.

Why do we have to have our news filtered through the weirdest prism, day in
day out. Is it because of this?
I mean, this morning we were treated to the news of an increase in
Islamophobic incidents. A spike, no less. No-one was beheaded in the course
