(By *American Zen*'s Mike Flannigan, on loan from Ari.) *“It is an immutable law of the universe that if you give government power, it uses it.”*- Former Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA) If, after 2016, we take away any real revelations and insights from the Obama administration, it will be Republican-Libertarian Bob Barr's maxim of government always using power if it has it given to it. Perhaps, in a recycling of the Bush era cynicism of the overreach of government power, we may also trot out Ben Franklin's bromide about those who surrender liberty for a little security and d... more »

Is This Our Civilization's Obituary?

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 39 minutes ago
From the *New Yorker.* Nicholas Thompson, on the crossing of the 400 ppm marker, tries to put our civilization's future in perspective, to show the moral collapse that we work so hard to ignore, and the brutal prospects we bequeath to our children and theirs. It's something of a *pre-mortem*obituary. *We’ve got more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now than at any point since the Pliocene, when there were jungles in northern Canada. And the number hurdles ever upward, as ocean levels rise and extreme weatherbecomes routine. Three-fifty was the old target; four-fifty is the new one. ... more »

I’ve been virtually incommunicado for a few days and didn’t manage to finish follow-up piece in time to post before I left. I read an article on Harry’s Place that explored, above and below the line, Hawking’s boycott and related issues in depth. Sadly the comments will be zapped all too soon. One in particular steered Hawking’s allegiance with the BDS movement in the direction of the BBC. It was from commenter ‘mind the crap’, whose blogging moniker forewarns the reader about the content of his own comments, which, unintentional or not, is quite considerate. Farmacology with Daphne Miller

I just read this book and I certainly recommend it. What it captures is the ongoing effort by individual farmers to achieve an holistic protocol for agricultural production. This is not mainstream as yet and what we understand as organic practice is very much a work in progress even if it is now clearly shown to be superior to industrial ways. This is still a glimpse of the true future of agriculture. To fully emerge, holistic agriculture needs to integrate the people themselves and overcome a long history of the low grade abuse of the land's servants. This can be done ... more »

We need to learn a new phrase. Graphene Based Heterostructures. This was an obvious promise of graphene research but it turns out to be unexpectedly way more accessible than anyone imagined. Most though, I would like to see thin skinned batteries and thin skinned coolants. Both are difficult in three dimensional configurations but may now become surprising. Global Fig Culture

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 2 hours ago
This is an interesting issue. First of, it is the most transportable fruit we can imagine. The simple act of drying allows it to be carried on land and at sea. This likely even preserves pollination insect larvae. Thus our conjecture regarding the global Atlantean world pretty well demands such a global distribution. Plenty of other crops also made the Bronze Age trip although with spotty results. That a wide range of separate varieties gives a year round harvest certainly drove any general effort to move the horticulture. We have really just begun to explore this fr... more »

Grape Hypertension Linkage Identified

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 2 hours ago
This tells us that the relationship is way more direct and important than anyone ever imagined. It makes the lifestyle choice rather compelling. Our primitive ancestors were clearly evolved to eat a lot of fruit on an ongoing basis. Any animal protein was always a bonus and not always too important. What the animal protein did was plausibly top off a steady but often irregular diet of plants. In our world, it is possible to consume a steady diet of fruit, vegetables and nuts. This strongly suggests that we need to build our diets around just that and use fish, insect... more »

Four Easy Fixes for Corporate Taxation

Everyone "knows" that the corporate income tax is a mess. Ask any company. They pay too much in corporate income tax, face rates higher than in any other OECD country, and are just following the law when they use tax havens to keep profits eternally deferred from taxation and to perform general sleight-of-hand. Don't believe a word of it. While some economists believe we shouldn't tax corporations at all, the corporate income tax (CIT) is a necessary backstopto the personal income tax (PIT). New Zealand to Outlaw Patents on Software

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 12 hours ago
*Guest post by **Dale Halling** * According to Kiwi Blog, which calls this “A good move from the Gov’t on patents,” there is a new Patent Bill that will prohibit patents on software. Logically, this suggests that there is something special about software that is incompatible with patents. In order to determine this, we first have to have a clear understanding of what software is and what a patent is. A patent is a property right that a person earns by creating a new invention. But what is an invention? An invention is anything created by man that has an *objective result*. Thi... more »

As an extreme example, if an individual is threatened by the use of force against him which could result in grievous bodily harm or death, to the extent that he is justified in repelling that force with deadly force, and he possesses a loaded firearm, it would be a defence to that individual if he shot the aggressor but not if he only threatened to... more »

Rubio plays the fool - Updated

Well, I suppose Rubio's ridiculous demand will play well with the rubes: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) on Monday called on the IRS commisioner to resign in the wake of the agency's admission that staffers in the Cincinatti branch targeted conservative non-profit groups for extra scrutiny in the run-up to the 2012 elections. You see, the well deluded base probably won't hear this on Fox News. Commissioner Douglas H. Another Vision

Majia's Blog at Majia's Blog - 22 hours ago
Last night I was lying in bed ready to fall to sleep and I had my second vision. I describe the first vision here, which occurred May 19, 2012. That vision was of a worm that surged up from the earth and then exploded into a terrible fire in the sky. Then, rapidly, a new image was burned into my brain. It was off a bridge shrouded in mist. I could not see the other side of the bridge. It signified to me the uncertainty of death brought upon by the worm. Kurdish Alliance Agrees To Face Saving Agreement With Iraq’s Central Government To Return To Baghdad

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 23 hours ago
Since March 2013, the Kurdish Coalition had been boycotting the central government. This was the result of on-going disputes over the 2013 budget, and the country’s oil policy. Recently the two sides came to a new agreement that allowed the Kurdish ministers and lawmakers to return to Baghdad. The deal was roundly criticized, because it gained no immediate benefits for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The reason why the Kurdish list agreed to return to office with none of its demands met was that it was gaining nothing from its absence, and simply wanted a face saving devi... more »

Spurious Impeachment? Probably Not

I've been writing about possible impeachment for a long time, and I said back in 2009 that "If Republicans take back the House, the odds are very good that they will impeach Barack Obama. 2012 Aquaculture at 42% of Global Fishery

If you inspect these charts, the one thing that is clear is that the wild catch is not growing at all and is stable at 90 million tons. A fishery collapse or two and it is heading down. At the same time aquaculture innovation is continuing apace and will soon displace even the tuna with an equivalent. Thus it is apparent that aquaculture will surely surpass the wild catch in 2021. In time I also expect that aquaculture economics will also force the wild fishery to contract and rationalize. In fact that has been happening in many subtle ways. In the long term, all f... more »

The take home of course, is that it is necessary to listen to the students as they struggle with the new concepts been presented. That will flush out already established error. From that starting point, the teacher then has a chance to be effective. Whenever we set out to change a paradigm in people's thinking, it is the same problem. They already have a satisfactory solution in hand that they have no reason to question. Electricity flowing like water is a great idea and works very well. I wonder how it might behave in low gravity. I have not found anyone doing high level research on gravity and time using a pure empirical approach without the built in assumptions of our theory.
