An abandoned copper-uranium mine, closed in 1969, is highly contaminated with radioactive waste. The mine was opened in 1893 by Daniel L. Hogan as copper claim and converted to the mining of U308 in 1956 and closed in 1969. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

This is what the EPA was created for, It's primary purpose was not to protect the Environment, but rather to steal public lands, allowing the Federal government to use them as leverage for outstanding debt and do whatever it wants with what are supposed to be the peoples lands.

For anyone thinking that Uranium mining is a winning situation, a recent book:
'Yellow dirt : an American story of a poisoned land and a people betrayed' by Judy Pasternak, should show the lies in that assumption.
Because the EPA still has a large ongoing program across the Navajo reservation attempting to mitigate the serious effects of the numerous old small uranium mines there, one might think there would be more concern given to reopening this mine near the Grand Canyon by using outdated environmental parameters as justification for their 'rights'.

These Canadian mining companies are very aggressive. (Energy Fools Resources is not the only one.) But why do they need to mess up the Grand Canyon with that highly polluting mining operation? They could go home to Great Slave Lake and mine all the uranium they want. Then, too, they could redirect their XL shale oil pipeline to Canadian ports instead of through the US. Looks like blowback. Time for some independence south of the border.

I do wish that the people in charge had the mind to clean up the leftovers from WWII before they start making a bigger mess, and why should we ever let foreign countries dig for potential resources on US soil? (Not that US companies would do a cleaner job of it - profit whores that they are).
Living in Washington state as I do, I am quite aware of the mess at Hanford, and the fact that for all the wanking that is going on, the contaminated materials are leaking and making their way yo the Columbia river. I can understand that things were done quick n dirty during the war, but they never got around to deciding what to do with the waste! And I am not at all convinced that there is anything that they can do, here, or in the southwest eventually.
