If you live in certain parts of Europe, you can get a Volkswagen directly
from the factory. Your car is built to order and then stored in one of
these 60 metre/200 feet silos where it awaits your arrival to take
delivery. Among other things you get your car with "zero" on the odometer.
There are two of these silos at the VW car store or Autostadt near the
factory in Wolfsburg. This video shows how the lift fetches a new car for

We were up very early this morning, which was not difficult for me, since I
hardly slept all night, most likely from drinking alcohol too late at
night, which keeps me up... but what are holidays for. The Eurostar train

Here we go. TEPCO plans to discharge water from the wells that they have
dug to intercept part of the groundwater before it leaks into the reactor
buildings, into the Pacific Ocean.
400 tonnes of groundwater go into the basements of the reactor buildings
every day. The 14 wells to intercept that water can only divert about
one-quarter of it. It is better than no diversion, but not by much.

Last night was a weird kind of night. Lot of people, including me, getting

Faking it with planters
I don't do much with ornamentals, preferring to think of our food plants as
the beautiful ones. But I'm having over some folks (yes, you're invited)
Saturday afternoon in honor of my 64th birthday (Beatles will be playing in
the background). So I thought I would grab some planters and pretend-plant
them with color spots, to be re-purposed after the party as potato planters.
Son climbed down into the creek and got me a wheelbarrow load of rocks. We

Boehner loses control of the House
Well if there was any tiny doubt left, it's clear now that John Boehner is
no longer leading the House. The crackpots are ruling the roost. Now that
they've lost interest in the battle of the budget, there will be yet
another vote on repealing Obamacare.
“We’ve got 17 new members that have not had the opportunity to vote on the
President’s health care law,” Boehner said, referring to next week’s ACA
repeal vote. “Frankly they’ve been asking for an opportunity to vote on it,
and we’re going to give it to them.”

Easy-does-it mulching
It's time to add mulch to the shade bed. But the greens here are a third
planting, still pretty small stuff. Risa doesn't like to work hard, or bend
over much, so she covers the little plants with inverted pots, handling the
pots with a pair of tongs.
Now she can throw straw without worrying too much where it lands, or having
to bend over and mess with misses. Toto supervises.
Oops, feet in the bed. Ignore, please. Once the mulch is down Risa lifts
the pots away with the tongs ...

Too Hot to Handle
When we think of nuclear screw ups it's usually the Soviet Union/Russia
that comes to mind - Chernobyl, submarine accidents, old nuclear reactors
jettisoned at sea, that sort of thing.
It turns out the United States has its own nuclear quagmire, the 586-square
mile Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Benton county, Washington, hard

I do not see that there is actual evidence here for this speculation.
However we also know that another researcher froze some organic precursors
for twenty years and did get encouragement. The fact remains that we are
just breaking into slow cold chemistry to see where it all takes us and
right now we can expect surprises.
Thus brinicles become interesting if we can set up a stable experimental
system that uses them. They are the cold water analog of the volcanic hot
spring.

US Home Prices up 9.3 Percent
In fairness, what this means to us is that we have switched from a
buyer's market to a sellers market and most transactions are taking place
without discounting. It still has to expand somewhat before we see forward
momentum in the market. It is clearly good news and we can hope to see
rapid growth in the new homes market to absorb this burgeoning demand. Yes

risky. Worse, we can organize and classify all that data to produce trends

beloved Moneypennies in a recent post, I was half-kidding. But isn't it a
coincidence that the title of his latest *West Wing Week *propaganda video is called
"Nobody Does It Better" -- the theme song of *The Spy Who Loved Me?* Check

New documents reveal that the Department of Justice takes a similar stance
to that of the IRS in claiming that they do not necessarily need warrants
to spy on emails, Twitter direct messages, Facebook chats and other private
communications of Americans.
In the case of the IRS, the head of the agency said last month that they
would abandon their policy that claimed the authority to read the emails of

No, Campaign Money Isn't the Root of All Evil
The Brennan Center's Jonathan Backer gets upset with Ezra Klein's recent
(excellent) post in which he concluded that money in the 2012 elections
turned out to be rather less of a threat to democracy than many had feared
in the post-Citizens United world. Backer's point: well, maybe Super PACs
didn't change the election results, but surely they changed the politicians
who received all that money.
I doubt it. And Backer's examples certainly don't convince me.
