HOLD THE INVASION!

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 minute ago
US government officials have claimed that Bashar al-Assad's government used chemical weapons against the citizens of Syria, but according to the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry that may not be the case. According to the findings of the commission, there is evidence that suggests the anti-government rebels in the country are guilty of these allegations. Israel has launched air strikes against the worn torn country in an attempt to stop the movement of weapons allegedly coming in from Iran, but what is really going on the ground?

Claude Megson: McMurray Rd townhouse

Things Never Ever Ever Ever To Debate

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 25 minutes ago
Thomas Roberts tweets: "From Monday's show -- Is Obama a lame duck?" Apparently in an effort to scare off anyone who might otherwise be tempted to watch his MSNBC show. Just cut it out, everyone, right now. It's not an interesting question. It's not a question that's worth debating. It's not a question that's going to shed any light on anything that we really want to know. It is useful, in my view, to speculate or to analyze a president's current reputation with people in Washington, and to assess how that might affect a battle in Congress or in the bureaucracy. Sure. As we saw yesterday, the American conservative movement is a captive of-- and virtually inextricable from-- the self-sustaining, cash-soaked universe of Big Oil and Gas. Conservative politicians' careers have been financed by Big Oil and they will fight to the death for their corporate masters. Unfortunately, the death their fighting for is our death, our country's and our planet's death. As Bill McKibben mentioned in his sermon, tiny Bavaria in southern Germany (27,239 square miles-- smaller than South Carolina) now more solar panels functioning to create cheap, clean electricity ... more »

Save us from 25 year old glibertarians with big brains and little vision. Defense Distributed successfully test-fired their 3D printed, nearly all plastic gun this week. It took some amount of nerve to actually fire it by hand since an earlier string pulled test with a higher caliber bullet exploded the whole damn gun. We should qualify that the gun does have one non-plastic component, "a common hardware store nail used as its firing pin." It also incorporates a strip of non-functional metal somewhere in the body in order to render it detectable to security gates. The owner of ... more »

Did ALEC suggest ALEC state legislators who attended the Oklahoma City spring meeting - that they try to act like moderates - that they claim more moderate stances. Would make sense to me that they would - considering that the word extremist is appearing in the press more and more in relation to ALEC and ALEC legislators. Hypothetically, why would ALEC tell their members to lie to the public? Because ALEC wants more of their members in Congress (and Tillis is running for Congress in 2014) It's harder to get elected if you are associated with of an extremist organization. or Bec... more »

Even after a million hours of World War II documentaries I had somehow never heard of the Battle of Engineer Hill until today. The event is in the news because this month marks the 70th anniversary of the struggle for the Alaskan Island of Attu, which represents the last battle between warring nations to be fought in North America. Not a bad run. The warring nations in question were the U.S. and Japan. The *Anchorage Daily News* looks backat the battle that left over 2,000 Japanese and over 500 Americans dead. I have to commend Ezra Klein for push, push, pushing everyone to understand the place of the presidency in the US political system. I do hope everyone reads his latest essay on the topic, from his Wonkblog on Friday. That said, I continue to dissent from what Klein, Rick Hasen, and others say about polarization. ALEC Chooses to #DumpALEC and then HIDE!

It’s Monday morning - - - The secretive ALEC pro-corporate, ultraconservative, extremist meeting ended last Friday. I’ve been following ALEC for a long time now and the meeting that was held this past week in Oklahoma City set new standards for ALEC PR. The only thing of note is – if the ONE press release about the meeting, is any indication, they have indeed dumped “ALEC”. Still can’t imagine the damage that decision will make to the “member base”. They have used the acronym “ALEC" for 39 years – and *then ALEC chooses to #DumpALEC.** * That must be demoralizing for their “bas... more »

Pontification From The Pompous

Conrad Black -- that great defender of the Common Man -- argued in Saturday's* National Post* that public service unions are a public plague. He was defending the Harper government's decision to dictate labour policy at the CBC, Canada Post and Via Rail. The solution to public service strikes is straight out of *Alice In Wonderland* -- off with their heads: The CBC should be reformed as Charles I and Louis XVI were reformed, by the liberative stimulation of decapitation, and the vital and creative elements should be allowed, and financially permitted, to flourish. Fisking Dan Hodges on UKIP and Labour

Phil at A Very Public Sociologist - 10 hours ago
I quite like Dan Hodges' corner at the *Telegraph*. He writes well and is one of the few hard Blairite commentators around willing to give it to us straight. But he's often badly, dangerously wrong. With his 1997 route map to electoral victory out, Dan is terrified that anything sniffing of social democracy will lose us down the back roads and country lanes. Labour needs to stick to the clearly signposted highway to reach our 2015 destination. He is of the school that Labour will win (and can only win) if it promotes a policy agenda little different to that pursued by the Tories and... more »

Assistant professor Mehta had offered a cherry-picked account of American test scores in the New York Times. Reply in the affirmative to the efficacious use of technical language

Roobin at THROUGH THE SCARY DOOR - 12 hours ago
Some thoughts thoughts for the brain on this. A metaphor is a means by which a perhaps complicated idea or set of ideas is compacted down into a single phrase or even word. Take the phrase “all the world is a stage”[1] from Jacques soliloquy in As You Like It. The world is not a stage, but people do act out their lives, as it were, in roles thrust upon them. Karl Marx, a Shakespeare aficionado, put it differently: men make history but not in circumstances of their own choosing. If metaphor is a way of transporting meaning all language is in a sense a metaphor. Jargon[2] is a form... more »

Aging Control?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
Research on aging is clearly gaining momentum. Here we have another aspect of the aging condition. Several working protocols are already been field tested by motivated subjects as was inevitable and generally reports are favorable, if not obviously spectacular. For that reason, public enthusiasm is obviously muted. This state of affairs will not last, simply because a number serious folks are waking up to the possibility and going for it. We are still in the dissemination phase. I am actually quite optimistic here. This is likely to blow up fast and furious because ... more »

I grabbed this map from Dale Drinnon's blog, and it tells the story pretty clearly. The puma is well on its way to reestablishing itself everywhere. The deer populations are growing hugely, to say nothing of turkeys. I also expect to see plenty of the grey wolf as the years progress and both are dangerous to humans, particularly in winter when food does become scarce. Our core problem is that we are not yet seriously managing populations of both preditors and prey, and at some point we must. For the moment we are dealing with early recovery. What a surprise! The sheep are finally squealing. Of course it is obscene profiteering driven entirely by the inability of the insurance industry to contain their own costs when everything they do is juiced on the way through and more is better for them as it rationalizes higher premiums. Roundup Health Fears

There are serious concerns regarding roundup but this attempt to link it to low level chronic inflammation runs rather thin. It would be easier to start with automobile air pollution. Yet there is a problem. This is now an invasive broadly applied product that is unavoidable and that means we are running an uncontrollable long term experiment. In fact if we are going to speculate, it could well be linked to the reduction of male sperm counts over the past two generations. There are also few other possible prospects if any. Comparing the depth of the millennium problems

*The Riemann Hypothesis is probably the deepest one* In 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute offered 7 times $1,000,000 for the proofs of the Millennium Prize Problems. Is it possible to compare which of them are deeper than others? Needless to say, such a comparison depends on personal preferences, emotions, and there is probably no rigorous way to "prove" that one problem is deeper than others. However, that doesn't mean that one can't have an opinion; and it doesn't prevent some opinions from being more well-informed than others. So let me offer a sketch of the seven problems an... more »

The list seems to be: Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Martin O'Malley, Andrew Cuomo, Kirsten Gillibrand, John Hickenlooper, Amy Klobuchar, Brian Schweitzer, Mark Warner, Elizabeth Warren, but feel free to add anyone else you don't like! So: which, if any, do you think are totally unacceptable?

Yes, vegetables. This past year was especially momentous for me, so for this year's rating system, I'm going with Life Events of the Past Year, best to worst.*** * * (*** The actual worst day of last year was, without a doubt, when we helped the family of war resister Kim Rivera lea... more »
