WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)— “Secretary of State John Kerry said

As we await Obama's speech tonight, presumably trying to justify launching cruise missiles indiscriminately into Syria to punish Bashar al-Assad for the unproven notion that he was responsible for the chemical weapons deaths 3 weeks ago, he should consider the unequivocal consequences of the stupendously larger amounts of toxic chemicals that the U.S. dumped on Vietnam...

Understanding Anbar Before And After The Awakening Part II, Sheikh Abdullah Jalal Mukhif Faraji
The Anbar Awakening, which emerged in 2006 was a mix of sheikhs, clerics,
and tribesmen, many of which were involved with the insurgency. Each was
driven by their own motivation to give up the struggle against the
Americans and the Iraqi government, and instead turn their weapons on their
former compatriots. Sheikh Abdullah Jalal Mukhif Faraji was one such
individual. He was the deputy head of the Sunni Endowment in Anbar, and a

What the government is good at is collecting taxes, taking away your

In the science of chaos, “attractors” are operational principles around
which turbulence and apparent chaos are harmonized. What the limited nature
of our prior experiences dismisses as randomness or disorder, the study of
chaos and complexity is revealing as deeper patterns of regularity.

CMS: \(3\sigma\) deficits in search for vector-like \(b\)-like quarks
This blog and other sources occasionally mention excesses, possible (or
real?) deviations of the observed quantities away from the theoretical
predictions. They're extremely rare and we expect most of them to go away
when more data is collected, anyway. But the idea that some of of them are
real is surely what keeps many people going.
However, in most of these discussions, one subtlety is neglected:
deviations from predicted values may have two signs. Plus and minus. So in

Trudeau has had a good summer:
The Liberals continued to draft in the jetstream of their leader, Justin

command the media’s attention, as few opposition leaders can. Yes, in part
this is mere celebrity fascination — dynastic politics at its shallowest —
but in part it is owing to the personal qualities that a life in the public

"Song of Childhood," by Peter Handke
I first watched Wim Wenders’s film *Wings of Desire* years ago, drunk, at
the picture theatre, and really had no clue what was going on--except that
it was worth watching later.
Later turned out to be much, much, much later. Twenty-six years later. Just
last weekend. And I’m glad I finally did, because it’s a frankly earthly
celebration. And it has this neat poem running through it by Peter Handke,
based on the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, whose poetry is supposed to have
partially inspired the movie.

"Now Obama is ****ed. Gaining traction is a push to compel the Assad
regime to turn over its chemical weapons. The idea caught fire unexpectedly
on Monday after Secretary of State John Kerry made an off-hand comment that
Syria could resolve the stand-off by relinquishing its chemical weapons

Michelle Nunn Fumbles Badly On Syria-- Steen Miles Would Make A Better Choice For Georgia Democrats
Most Senate candidates are on the same page as the American people-- they

House of Representatives seeking higher office, top challengers and

president's plan for limited engagement, nine are skeptical of the idea and

What more needs to be said?
This country is hopeless.
Anti-War Sentiment
Well, you can describe blow-back against decades of imperialism in the
Middle East and adjacent areas as an unprovoked attack based
on a medieval hatred for your freedoms.
You can invade a country and kill anywhere from 50,000 to a million people
(they couldn't be bothered to keep track) because they wouldn't turn over a
suspect in the terrorist attack unless evidence of his guilt was produced.
You can then impose a super-corrupt, oppressive government on that
country's people and blame all resistance against it as being part of an
evil conspiracy.
You can then attack a country with... more »

Screw the Psy-Ops

Fellow Democrats, it's high time to admit to yourselves that Obama is not the "great black hope" you thought you had elected. On a little reflection you will realize that in the past five years he has presided over the imminent collapse of our economy, talked of cutting Social Security while ever increasing military spending, and lied us into senseless foreign wars that have subjected our troops (who we "support" with little ribbon stickers) to grave injury, post traumatic stress syndrome, and death (often at their own hand). Syria in not a threat to continental U.S. ...although it does have Russian missiles capable of sinking ships dispatched to rain cruise missiles on it's towns. So it's high time for Democrats and Republicans who are not brain dead to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and oppose Obama's plan to strike Syria!

The main narratives of the Iraq War tend to come from American and British
sources. It has not been until recently that the Iraqi perspective has been
added to the mix. One major difference between the two is what was the
turning point in the conflict. According to the U.S. Iraq had fallen into a
civil war by 2006, and things were not reversed until 2007 when the Surge
began. That brought new counterinsurgency tactics, which focused upon
protecting the population and turned many tribes and insurgents against
their compatriots. Some in Anbar would disagree with that history. Thamir

intruders who, according to the paper, caused the ball to move 40
centimeters away from the goal.
This is the text as it appears at Depor.pe:

ADULT ABUSE: Sort of a nervous bustdown!
*MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2013*
*Part 1—The Times brings in the gloom:* Last Friday, we listed “five myths
about public schools,” noting that there were others we could have chosen.
Just to refresh you, these were the five myths we chose:
*Myth:* American students have been losing ground, or showing no progress,
in reading and math.
*Myth:* American students can’t compete with students in other nations.
*Myth:* American students were once the best in the world on international
tests.
*Myth:* The United States is constantly humbled by educational powers like
Finland.
*Myth:* Our “achieve... more »
The Unrepentant Sinner?
*"I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that
repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no
repentance."*
But will there be such joy in heaven over one sinner who only *says* he
repents, but who seems much more concerned with getting an eye for an eye
and a tooth for a tooth from his enemies, and who most definitely doesn't
seem prepared to turn the other cheek or examine too closely the beam in
his own eye?
Namely Chris Huhne.
Forgiveness has already been granted to the fallen politician by the *
Guardian*, which has now giv... more »

From NEPC: BOULDER, CO (September 9, 2013) – “Good schools shouldn’t weed

Meet the six Muslim Brotherhood operatives in Obama regime
Do you wonder why Barack Hussein Obama seems so keen to come to the rescue
of the Muslim Brotherhood and its associated organisations?
Here's a possible explanation
http://www.fireandreamitchell.com/2013/08/18/obama-six-muslim-brotherhood-operatives/
Remember when you were told that women want to wear the burqua and that women are not forced by Islam to cover up?
The Herald Sun reports:
'*A SUDANESE woman says she's prepared to be flogged to defend the right to
leave her hair uncovered in defiance of a Taliban-like law. *
* *
Amira Osman Hamed faces a possible whipping if convicted at a trial which
could come on September 19.
Under Sudanese law, her hair - and that of all women - is supposed to be
covered with a "hijab", but Ms Hamed refuses.
The 35-year-old's case has drawn support from civil rights activists and is
the latest to highlight Sudan's series of laws governing morality, which
took effect after the 1989 Islamist-backed coup by P... more »
Read Stuff, You Should
Happy Birthday to Jeffrey Combs, 59.
Ah, back to it. Which means back to the good stuff:
1. Seth Masket on where the problems with political journalism can be found.
2. Very good overview of the ACA "premium shock" debate from Jonathan Cohn.
3. I generally agree with Danny Vinik's speculation about a post-retirement
(announcement) Boehner, should we get one.
4. Nice to have Andrew Rudalevige out there writing about the presidency.
Recommended. Well, I suppose everything I put here is recommended, but I'm
not sure I've emphasized how useful Rudalevige is on these issues.
5. Jordan ... more »
Harper Unleashes The Dogs Of War
Stephen Harper is stocking his office with fanatical loyalists and
delivering red meat speeches about the "dangerous" opposition. Clearly he
is preparing to go to war -- not in Syria, but at home. And that tells you
a lot about the man. He does not see that he is the author of his own folly.
Lawrence Martin wrote back in May that "serial breaches of trust will doom
the Harper machine." The Wright-Duffy affair is only the latest in a long
list of abuses of power:
Much has been written about their odious record on ethics and abuse of
power. But there’s a common thread to the narrati... more »
South Carolina Senate Race: Jay Stamper vs Lindsey Graham
Jay Stamper is the Democratic candidate for Senate in South Carolina and
he's running against Lindsey Graham-- or whoever the Tea Party replaces
Graham with in an increasingly bitter and contentious Republican primary.
Blue America endorsed Jay and he needs your help, not just to help fund his
grassroots campaign, but to help to send a message to Graham and John
McCain that the people of the United States will not be scared and
stampeded into agreeing to an unnecessary and illegitimate war. We asked
Jay to give us a rundown on how the battle over attacking Syria looks from

Edward Teller: anniversary, interview
Edward Teller died exactly 10 years ago. See the biography I wrote 100
years after his birth and other TRF articles mentioning Teller.
In this 30-minute interview taped on August 5th, 1974, he talked to James
Day.
At the beginning, the father of the H-bomb claims that what exploded and
changed after the war was technology, not science. He tries to explain to
the host that the pure scientific discoveries had no major impact on the
life of the society and this impact isn't the right criterion to measure
their importance.
The theoretical breakthroughs are pillars of applicatio... more »
Monday linkage
Syria continues to dominate the news. President Obama will appear on
television both tonight and tomorrow to make the case for intervention in
Syria. Both Senate and House votes are leaning against authorization. Assad
will appear tonight on Charlie Rose (!) to deny responsibility for last
month’s chemical weapons attack. More Syria linkage after the jump. The

Leonard Peltier's Statement on Indigenous Rights Tribunal
September
9, 2013
By Leonard Peltier
My dear friends and family,
There is a lot being said about the scheduled “Leonard Peltier
International Tribunal on the Abuse of Indigenous Human Rights" on
October 2-4, 2013, on the Oneida Reservation in Oneida/Green Bay, WI. I
want to express support for and appreciation to my team for all of the
hard work they are putting in to make this a
Secretary of State demands Syria surrender its chemical weapons within one week - otherwise the US would launch an " unbelievably small and limited effort " to punish the Assad regime for the August 21 , 2013 chemical attack ....US admits it does not possess irrefutable evidence that President Assad was behind the alleged chemical weapon attack on August 21 , 2013 - but will rely on " common sense test irrespective of the intelligence " .....additional updates on syria !

US secretary of State John Kerry (Reuters)
US secretary of state John Kerry has given an ultimatum to Syrian president
Bashar al-Assad to avoid a military strike by turning over his entire
chemical weapons arsenal to the international community within the next
week.
At a joint press conference with UK foreign secretary William Hague, Kerry
said that America was not going to war but would launch an "unbelievably
small and limited effort" to... more »

*"Premonitions: Yes, We Do Have A Sixth Sense”*
By Sarah Chalmers
"On Friday, October 21, 1966, a mountain of coal waste, perched above the
Welsh mining village of Aberfan, broke loose and came flowing down
uncontrollably. Destabilized by recent rains, a river of black coal sludge,
water and boulders bore down on Aberfan. It steamrollered over a tiny
cottage halfway down the slope, thundered through Pantglas Junior School,
obliterated a further 20 houses - then finally came to rest. A total of 144
people, including many children, were c... more »

Ken Roth from HRW. Spins for NATO despite significant lingering doubts

Bombing for Peace
* The loaded language is very interesting. His organization is quite
obviously a NATO propaganda tool.* *Clearly*. *Not that I had any doubt,
but, just in case anyone else did?*
*Ken Roth makes many false or misleading claims including:*
-Claiming Assad undertook the chemical attacks. Conveniently the same
stance as US/Israel
-Claiming NATO mercs do not have weapons the do indeed have.
-Claiming the casualty total from... more »
