Guest Post - A Guide to Going Green - Improvements You Can Make Around the Home
Buying a home is one of the biggest investments you will ever make, however
the spend doesn’t stop there as throughout your time in the property you
will need to spend money on many factors to ensure the space is comfortable
and meets your needs. Spending money on energy bills is arguably one of the
largest regular expenses you will have, and with finances tighter in this
day and age for a rising number of households, any ways that this can be
reduced are likely to be welcomed with open arms.

WILL AUSTRALIA JOIN THE U.S. TO ATTACK SYRIA AND IRAN?
It was clear before Australia’s recent elections that the previous Labor
government under Kevin Rudd would have supported US ‘punitive’ action
against Syria – and this despite Australia taking over the presidency of
the UN Security Council (UNSC) this month. However, while the Rudd
government may have given political support to the US, it is not known if
Rudd would have provided any military support apart from the intelligence
and communications resources that are based in Australia.
That was before last Saturday’s election. Australia’s conservative incoming

The Upcoming War On Syria: Has The US "Intelligence" Community Fabricated Evidence To Lure US Into War With Syria? (Why Do I Smell Mossad?)
It does seem that there has been a momentary delay in the US launching its
insanely stupid war against the innocent nation of Syria.... With the
recent findings that absolutely prove that Assad did not gas his own
people, and with the Syrians themselves allowing their own chemical weapons
stockpiles to be turned over to international control, there is now
definitely a backing off by the US, at least for the time being, in their
rush to launch its missile attack on that peaceful nation.....

Well, you can describe blow-back against decades of imperialism in the

You can then impose a super-corrupt, oppressive government on that

Fellow Democrats, it's high time to admit to yourselves that Obama is not the "great black hope" you thought you had elected. On a little reflection you will realize that in the past five years he has presided over the imminent collapse of our economy, talked of cutting Social Security while ever increasing military spending, and lied us into senseless foreign wars that have subjected our troops (who we "support" with little ribbon stickers) to grave injury, post traumatic stress syndrome, and death (often at their own hand). Syria in not a threat to continental U.S. ...although it does have Russian missiles capable of sinking ships dispatched to rain cruise missiles on it's towns. So it's high time for Democrats and Republicans who are not brain dead to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and oppose Obama's plan to strike Syria!

Elizabeth Warren To AFL-CIO: "If We Don't Fight, We Can't Win, But If We Fight We WILL Win"
Although Obama canceled his appearance at the AFL-CIO convention in L.A.
this week so he could work on strategy for persuading America that war
against Syria is the right move, the convention rocked without him-- by
what many pray is a future president, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth

movement to beat back the enemies of working families. Here's the body of
her address:
I love being here with labor. It reminds me of a family reunion. Lots of

Updated Major Hurricane Drought Figure
2,878 days. The US major hurricane drought continues. This length of time

Of course, it could end this month or after, but it will end sometime.
Whenever it does it has been remarkable.

Syria, War and Children
It is sad that how war-torn areas impact children and what kind of life

neighbouring countries and many of them are children. Syria's total

Today, September 9th 2013, is the day Congress will debate the prospect of
war. Then, when the debating is done, they will vote on President Obama’s
recommendation that the United States bomb Syria back to the Stone Age.
These well-heeled politicians will meet in the comfort and safety of
Washington to decide the fate of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of
Syrians. Most of them couldn’t point out Syria on a map, let alone comment
on the complex and tribal issues that beset the country.

The main narratives of the Iraq War tend to come from American and British
sources. It has not been until recently that the Iraqi perspective has been
added to the mix. One major difference between the two is what was the
turning point in the conflict. According to the U.S. Iraq had fallen into a
civil war by 2006, and things were not reversed until 2007 when the Surge
began. That brought new counterinsurgency tactics, which focused upon
protecting the population and turned many tribes and insurgents against
their compatriots. Some in Anbar would disagree with that history. Thamir

the case may be!)
It moved chronologically from Rome's destruction of the temple in 70 AD to
the expulsion of the Jews from Christian Spain in 1492, when hundreds of
thousands of people were "sent packing from a country where they'd lived
for over a thousand years."
This latter event bookended the programme's narrative arc and, as with last
week's programme, the episode opened by concentrating on a si... more »

Pol. Ideology 48: Hobbes, Locke, Rosseau and Social Contract Theory
A friend, one of the few real political science academics who can dabble in
political theory and discuss things in their facebook walls or blogs, *Amado
“Bong” Mendoza* (http://bongmendoza.wordpress.com/) of the UP Pol. Science
Department, posted the following in his facebook wall yesterday.
I like Bong's discussions about these three classical thinkers of the
social contract theory, so I am reposting them here. "Social contract" is
an agreement, explicit or implicit, between citizens and the State and how
freedom and power are to be divided and implemented between them. I made a

US: There is no Evidence Syrian Government Carried Out Attacks
*September 9, 2013* (Tony Cartalucci) - US White House Chief of Staff
Dennis McDonough made the unbelievable admission this week that Western
interests have concluded Syria carried out an alleged chemical attack in
eastern Damascus based on "common sense" rather than "irrefutable
evidence." Slate's "White House: “Common-Sense Test” And Not “Irrefutable”
Evidence Hold Assad Responsible," states [emphasis added]:
White House Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough went on the Sunday talk shows
to drum up support for what he called a “targeted, limited effort” that

Federal law prohibits the military from using propaganda and psychological

Afghanistan, according to reporter Michael Hastings, who joins us to speak
about his recent exposé for Rolling Stone magazine, "Another Runaway
General: Army Deploys Psy-Ops on U.S. Senators."
In the article, Hastings writes that Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, the

By Attacking Syria, The Obama Administration Will Be Throwing Syrian Christians Under The Bus

"Rebels including al-Qaeda-linked fighters gained control of a Christian
village northeast of the capital Damascus, Syrian activists said Sunday.
Government media provided a dramatically different account of the battle
suggesting regime forces were winning.
It was impossible to independently verify the reports from Maaloula, a
scenic mountain community known for being one of the few places in the
world where residents still speak the ancient Middle Eastern language of

"No cliché is an island," says "New Yorker" cartoon editor Bob Mankoff, and he reports on his cliché challenge to readers
*"Relax, honey -- change is good."*
*by Ken*
Last week *New Yorker* cartoon editor Bob Mankoff, in the
newsletter-blogpost "No Cliché Is an Island," issued a challenge to
readers, having to do with clichés in cartoons. He had been set off by a
blogpost by Teju Cole, "In Place of Thought," which bemoaned "too many
standard formulations in our language" that "stand in place of thought" yet
are proclaimed "due to laziness, prejudice, or hypocrisy -- as though they
were fresh insight."
"Cole's statement resonates with me," Bob wrote, "being a lazy, prejudiced
hypocrite."
Yet, for me... more »
Gareth Morgan v Liberty Scott: update
I reported on last Friday’s ramble the online stoush ‘tween Captain Morgan

badly the prison state has been misunderstood by everyone but him and Kim

Turns out Gareth has backed down—in exactly the same way that Soviet
historians used to back down, i.e., by rewriting the past.
Scott reports that Gareth
has removed his libel threat and his lengthy ad-hominem attack on me which
started with a diatribe against ad-hominem attacks. He has edited many of
my comments extensively, and has done the same to hi... more »

They call it a recovery. The OECD has raised its forecast of UK economic
growth from 0.8% to 1.5%. This follows on from the British Chambers of
Commerce who've floated a similar figure. While economics wonks are
muttering "caveats, caveats" the *Daily Express* have had no hesitation
proclaiming "Britain's economic recovery is now in overdrive". Resting
arguments on evidence might be out of sorts when it comes to punditry, but
as someone who thinks commentary should fit the facts and not the other way
round it would be dumb to deny the numbers are, handily, falling like

*“The Ghost With Consciousness And Potential”*
by The DailyOM
“One day a ghost paid Ari a visit. She had long blond hair and wore a
banana-colored satin nightgown. Even though she had the power to interrupt
and to come and go as she pleased, she arrived between sessions as a
gesture of respect and good will.
"I never got to use my talents!" the ghost wailed. She floated about the
room, agitated and unable to alight. "Now I'm dead and buried!"
"You can't create where you find yourself these days?" Ari asked the
miserable ghost.
"No! I just wander the universe, pointlessly an... more »
From Chris Lubienski: Do Charter Schools Promote Social Justice, Privatize Public Education (or both)?
Some liberals are quite enthralled with the social justice possibilities of
school choice. While district and enrollment boundaries reflect segregated
residential patterns in the US, in theory, choice allows families to select
schools across these artificial barriers, eradicating an important
institutional impediment to equity. Moreover, schools then must compete to
attract students, just like businesses […]
The Elegant Solution
Peter D has been running a fantastic series on PUFAs and cancer. Lots of
references to linoleic acid promoting the growth of hepatoma cells.
"In the lab situation rapid hepatoma tumour growth needs either arachidonic
or linoleic acids. The acids must be taken up in to the hepatoma cells,
they must be acted on by lipoxygenase to produce 13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic
acid, better known as 13-HODE. 13-HODE appears to be the mitogen which
promotes rapid cancer growth. 13-HODE looks like a repair signal gone wrong
in cancer cells."

personal update, our new (rental) house, and why we'll never own a home
We've moved! We're renting a much larger, newer, and more comfortable house
in central Mississauga. We've lost the huge backyard of our old rental
home, but the backyard here is still a decent size, the largest of any
house we saw that we'd want to live in. (The choices were huge backyards
with old, un-maintained, falling-apart houses, beautiful new townhouses
with either no backyard or a tiny square of cement, or this place!)
We have more space - *way* more space - in this house on two floors than we
had in the old place on three floors. And after two major floods, we're

Nothing left to lose
This is criminal. Witness government sponsored predatory debt collection.
On the day Bennie Coleman lost his house, the day armed U.S. marshals came
to his door and ordered him off the property, he slumped in a folding chair

Movers carted out his easy chair, his clothes, his television. Next came

Why announcing who replaces Bernanke has anything to do with Syria is a puzzler - an announcement tomorrow doesn't mean Hearings on the Nomination would occur Wednesday - this only makes sense if Obama is going with Summers and just doesn't need further uproar from Dems who want Yellen - no need to give another reason to vote NO before the votes on the War Resolution are cast....
Sounds like it's going to be Larry Summers......

Is There A Remedy For The Dysfunction Of American Politics?
Financiers of the far right's anti-democracy jihad: 2 Kochs
Elizabeth Drew, in a fascinating piece for the *NY Review of Books*, The
Stranglehold on Our Politics, talks about the determinative properties of
voter turnout in midterm elections. Normally turnout sinks from between
51.7 to 61.6% for presidential elections into the high 30s for midterms.
When the Democrats took back the House and Senate from the GOP in 2006,
they managed to turn out a whopping 40.4%. The GOP learned a lesson and,
with the help of right-wing billionaires and their zombie Tea Party
brigades turned out 41.6%... more »

Empty-headed know-nothingism not good enough, says educator
*This is a long post, but it is, I think, worth your time. There is no
subject that could be more important than this—and I bring good news…*
[image: Ministry_of_Miseducation]
I was overjoyed to see Associate Professor of Education Elizabeth Rata
writing in the *Weekend Herald* about a serious affliction brought on by
the Ministry’s national curriculum. Knowledge, she says, has been removed
from school curricula, “increasingly abandoned for a misguided focus on
skills and the process of learning.”
I was overjoyed to see her say that—not because I’m happy it’s happened,
but becau... more »
