10:25pm MDST Obama & Rouhani: the historic handshake that never happened

As political leaders in Washington and Tehran signal they are in favor of
diplomacy, is a genuine rapprochement between the two powers actually
possible?
The speeches at this week’s UN General Assembly by the leaders of Iran and
the US, although each striking conciliatory tones, both envisage a vastly
different international order. Recently-elected President Hassan Rouhani,
in his first speech to the assembly, reiterated that the Iranian nuclear
issue is essentially a red herring, while eloquently addressing the moral
deficiencies of the international order... more »

If we look up "holistic" in Google we find, apart from the narrower medical

The 1% Government
Taiwan is getting pummeled by several long-term trends -- the financial
liberalization of the late 1980s that brought in big global financial
players, to Taiwan's detriment; the shift of factories and investment to
China; and governance by the KMT. The trend is clear, as Commercial Times

According to government statistics, the disposable annual income of people

‘The Billionaire and the Mechanic’
It’s the story of how the billionaire, Larry Ellison, brought the America’s
Cup to San Francisco through his friendship with a car mechanic. “It’s
non-fiction that reads like a novel.”
And this is just the story of how he first won the Cup, and that’s almost
the material for a film.
As if history’s greatest ever sporting comeback—the dramatic story, that
finally ended this morning, of how the Cup was held by the same team—isn’t
material enough on its own!

Are the mainstream media informing Americans of climate change? "Absolutely not." Says Subhankar Banerjee: "The corporate media is doing a dismal job. After my first piece was published about the Boulder Colorado flood last Friday, I received numerous comments from readers that the media is showing the tragedy and what is going on, but no one is raising a single question about if this event is related to climate change. Jaisal Noor, TRNN Producer: "...supporters of President Obama would say that he is confined by the political reality, lack of public support, and the Republicans, who will not back any real climate change initiatives. What's your response to people that say that President Obama is doing is much as he can?" Bannerjee: "That is absolutely not true, because you just mentioned the public. The public, as polls after poll show, are deeply concerned about climate change, and support, actually, public policy to address climate change. And you brought up the Republican. Republican leadership of course has been horrible. Bush was the oil president, and then Obama is following in his heels. But the public ...even some 70 percent Republicans are actually in support, do now understand, and believe climate change, and do support public policy to address it."

But before we know how things go wrong, we need to know how they go

So we’ll start by discussing how economies grow, contrasting the growth

INDEPENDENCE, MO., Dec. 21—I think it has become necessary to take another
look at the purpose and operations of our Central Intelligence Agency—CIA.
At least, I would like to submit here the original reason why I thought it
necessary to organize this Agency during my Administration, what I expected
it to do and how it was to operate as an arm of the President.

"The U.S. stock market is near all-time highs, while politicians and

More Notes on the Cruz Speech
First, on "fillibuster." As Josh Huder pointed out on twitter, there
certainly is a filibuster involved here. That's correct, but the filibuster
is, essentially, the objection to the motion to proceed, which forces a
cloture vote and sets the clock for the cloture vote. That's the
filibuster. By all accounts, the filibuster will be defeated at that point.
Cruz's speech is occupying a (very large!) portion of the time within that
filibuster; if he wasn't speaking, either someone else would be or the
Senate would be in recess. So there is a filibuster -- which Cruz and Mike

Iraq’s New 5-Year Development Plan Sets Nice Goals But Will Have Little Effect Upon Policy
Iraq just issued its new 5-year National Development Plan (NDP). Its main
goal is to use the country’s vast oil wealth to diversify the economy
towards agriculture, industry, and other sectors. It has the same basic
goals as the previous plan. The problem is that the NDP is not a real path
of action for Baghdad to follow rather it just sets broad goals for Iraq.
More importantly, the government does not pay attention to it when passing
legislation or making policy, which means it has no real affect upon the
future of the country.

(apart from the classic syndrome) cirrhosis of the liver independent of
viruses or alcohol, are hard to treat by simple removal of gluten grains,
because gliadin sensitivity creates cross-sensitivity to peptides found in
other foods.
(Hat-tip to Suppversity for posting about this).
Gliadin (Wheat), Casein (Milk), Avedin (Barley and Oat) and Zein (Corn)
peptides are prolamines (peptides with Pro-Pro bonds). But why does instant
coffee feature at all? Well, coffe... more »
EU to Legally Enforce Genocide of Europeans
The European Soviet Union is the enemy of Europe. This is something
everyone who cares to pay* *attention to globalisation and the destruction
of the European people *must* be aware of. Now we have the evidence of the
genocidal conspiracy against the 'goyim'. The following video and
information deserves to go viral on the internet. There is no excuse for
not spreading this as far as possible - indeed, we must do this urgently,
as even discussion of this depotism is due to be criminalised in the gulag
which has been built across much of Europe.

Somalia: The New World Order
George H. W. Bush: Somalia New World Order Speech - Remarks at Texas A&M
University (December 15, 1992) from Spike1138 on Vimeo.
"For the first time, turning this global vision into a new and better world
is, indeed, a realistic possibility. It is a hope that embodies our
country's tradition of idealism, which has made us unique among nations and
uniquely successful. And our vision is not mere utopianism. The advance of
democratic ideals reflects a hard-nosed sense of our own, of American
self-interest. For certain truths have, indeed, now become evident:

Iggy's Back - Slamming Dion, Rae & Layton
Michael Ignatieff has a reputation for smearing others, even where they've
been right and he's been wrong, and he appears to have lost none of his
appetite for that sort of thing.
In his new book, *Fire and Ashes*, Iggy takes swipes at Stephane Dion, at
Bob Rae and at Jack Layton - everyone it seems *except* Stephen Harper.
And as for Harper soaring to a majority on the back of Ignatieff's hapless
leadership? Well that's the voters' fault, not Iggy's. “*So instead of
getting the democracy they deserve, voters end up paying for their own
disillusion.*”
Thanks, Mike. You're all... more »
Lapham Visits Death
*For 40 years during the Cold War, the American government,*
* both Democrat and Republican, deployed the shadow of death (i.e., the
constant threat of nuclear annihilation) *
*to limit the freedoms and quiet the voices*
* of the American people.*
* The surveillance apparatus now waging the perpetual*
* war on terror is geared to control a herd of trembling obedience.** *
*
*
So writes American intellectual (and Caroline Mulroney father-in-law) Lewis
Lapham in an ode to Death.
It is not unnatural once one passes the threshold of 60 to pay a bit more
attention to the subject. It's not a... more »

We have existed long before you were created. We will exist after earth has
turned to a star. We come forth from a place that has always existed as
Light. You hold memoirs of us within your genetic encodings. We are the
‘Council of One’ and each one of us is stationed at a sacred access and
exit on Earth. We align with what has been holy, long before the Earth was
fit for life. We align with what was holy b... more »
Second Grade - Skills Strand Lesson 1: Thanks Engageny
Reblogged from An Antique Teacher: So, today, I did the Core Knowledge
Skills Strand Lesson 1 from Module 1. This is the lesson that SHOULD HAVE
been taught on Day 1 of Second Grade. There were many materials that I
didn't have - flip picture cards (hat, cat, sad, etc), and some things I
didn't […]
Coates continues to seem to flip concerning the Zimmerman trial!
*TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2013*
*A favorite blogger, a struggling progressive culture:* Ta-Nehisi Coates is
easily one of our favorite bloggers.
Two reasons: He has his own subject matter and he has his own point of
view. He doesn’t roll out the twenty familiar topics and say the thirty
familiar things, with one or two of the standard points ever so slightly
adjusted.
That said, Coates has seemed to be doing something unusual in the past
week. Unless we’re reading him incorrectly, he’s been changing his stance
on the Zimmerman trial, without explaining why. The process continues toda... more »
The Story of the Jews (Part 4)
Chagall, Russian Wedding
Simon Schama's *The Story of Jews *is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of
the best things the BBC has done in years.
A good deal of the credit for that goes to Simon Schama himself. As a
story-telling historian, few can match him.
This week's episode, Over the Rainbow*, *took us from Eastern Europe to the
United States and back again - from the Pale of Settlement to *The Wizard
of Oz, *and then (leaving a lump in this viewer's throat) to a village in
Nazi-occupied Lithuania - homeland of Simon Schama's own family, on his
mother's side. Just one Jewish surv... more »
Some random Cup questions
How do you manage to go sideways in one race for the Auld Mug just when
you’re catching up, and then put yourself dead in the water at a start in
another one—putting your boat right in the way of the other boat—*just at
the moment it looks like you’ve taken the advantage?*
From 8-1 down to 8-7 (or 8-9 if you exclude the court’s penalty against
Oracle) *are we witnessing the greatest comeback ever in any major sporting
contest?*
*Isn’t that a reason to admire James Spithill and Russell Coutts*, *instead
of denigrating them?*
Given that sailors are saying Oracle is a better boat b... more »

*“Washington’s Tyranny”*
by Paul Craig Roberts
"The war criminal Barack Obama has declared his “outrage” over the 62
deaths associated with the takeover of a Nairobi, Kenya, shopping mall by
al-Shabaab fighters. But the attack on the shopping mall was Obama’s fault.
Al Shabaab spokesmen said that the attack on the Nairobi mall was a
retaliatory response to the Kenyan troops sent to fight against them in
Somalia. The Kenyan troops, of course, were sent to Somalia as a result of
pressure from Washington. Just as the outbreak of violence in Mali resulted
from the fighters that O... more »

“The liberties of our Country, the freedom of our civil constitution are
worth defending at all hazards: And it is our duty to defend them against
all attacks. We have receiv'd them as a fair Inheritance from our worthy
Ancestors: They purchas'd them for us with toil and danger and expence of
treasure and blood; and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It
will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation,
enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by
violence without a struggle; or be cheated out of them by the artifices of

Nazi Takeover In North Dakota?
Leith, North Dakota is on the map. Actually it isn't *literally* on the
map, just in the news. The town was founded in 1910 along a railroad line
that was abandoned in 1984. Since there were no highways going through
Leith it started losing population. At its height in the 1930s there were
174 people. Today there are 24. It's in Grant County (pop.- 2,394), named
for Ulysses S. Grant. Last year Grant County gave Romney 1,012 votes (73%).
It also went for defeated Republican Senate candidate Rick Berg by 61%
(842) and for winning Republican House candidate Kevin Cramer by 65% (912). ... more »
