Parliament or legislature can overturn a precedent
*Régie des rentes du Québec v. Canada Bread Company Ltd*., 2013 SCC 46

Catch of the Day
An easy one this time, as Steven Benen goes the Ignore Those Polls! route
with regard to the debt limit.
Let this be a reminder to the political world: there's nothing quite as
useless as a debt-ceiling poll. Folks have no idea what the debt ceiling
is, what default is, what bond markets are, or what the full faith and
credit of the United States means, so polling on the subject tells us
nothing.
Since my position is that politicians should probably ignore all
deficit/debt polls in general, I obviously agree that they should ignore
debt limit polls.

Diverting the Bewildered Herd
Let's
see....
Income inequality in America has officially reached its highest
levelsince the Great Depression. Conservative estimates now have a third
of us
living at or below the poverty line, but in real life, fully 50% of the
population is teetering on the brink of financial catastrophe. Compared
to
the rest of the civilized world, only the recent dictator- devastated
Romania ranks lower than we do on the child poverty scale. These stats
are
a feature -- not a bug -- of what happens when plutocrats take charge,
and

Noncompete Answers: Am I Bound If My Employer Violates FMLA?; Wages Cut Right After Signing; Can They Restrict My Livelihood?
Having received more questions on noncompete agreements than any other

contracts on employees all over the country. There are lots of defenses to
them, but defending takes money. I continue to hope that some legislators

that some attorneys general will start fighting illegal noncompetes with

In the days following Obama’s recent request to Congress to “delay a vote”
on authorizing his Syria attack many peace groups were sending emails
around declaring victory. In many respects it was right for people to
celebrate the fact that the House of Representatives was going to
resoundingly defeat Obama’s “red line” military strategy. Even the vote in
the Senate was becoming more contested than anyone ever imagined possible. Here
in Maine our Republican Sen. Susan Collins, always a loyal supporter of the

*Part 4—Return from Gilligan’s Island:* Does anyone at the New York Times
know jack-spit about schools?
Certainly, very few *readers* do. Consider the way of the Times:
Last month, the former executive editor, Bill Keller, wrote in his weekly
op-ed column that the United States has experienced “decades of
embarrassing decline in K-12 education.”
Among journalistic elites, such claims are very familiar. They’re also
extremely hard to square with our best educational data.

war is coming Michael Snyder
Over the past few days, there has been a tremendous wave of optimism that
it may be possible for war with Syria to be averted. Unfortunately, it
appears that a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria is extremely
unlikely. Assad is certainly willing to give up his chemical weapons, but
he wants the U.S. to accept a bunch of concessions that it will never agree
to. And it certainly sounds like the Obama administration has already
decided that “diplomacy” is going to fail, and they continue t... more »

‘Corruption’ is a subtle word, because it describes a process rather than

MR. NOBODY - as long as you don't choose, everything remains possible
what a lovely message from Hollywood, this time
new film by Jaco Van Dormael MR. NOBODY, it has a catchphrase of 'if you
never make a choice everything is possible' but in the film he actually
says, "As long as you don't choose, everything remains possible."
So, right there, duplicity via intent - and the intent is to have the
Global Gambling Game aka Corporate War for the few to make PROFIT, subdue
you with confusion and doubt. It's working. I believe. Twist.

DREAM SCHOLARSHIP POSITIVE UPDATE

a question of urgency. I say we need the signatures to keep pouring in. The

* This is my article today in Mining Week.

A capital intensive industry would have less direct job creation compared
to a labor-intensive one, say on a per hectare of land area. But workers in
the former would have higher per capita income compared to the latter. This
higher income per worker means higher consumption power, which means
indirect job creation nearby. For instance, a person earning P30,000 a
month in a province would have the extra resources to hire a nanny for the
kids, compared to someone earning P20,000 a month or less.
In addition, higher productivity per... more »
