“This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time. Every breath is a choice. Every minute is a choice. To be or not to be. Every time you don't throw yourself down the stairs, that's a choice. Every time you don't crash your car, you re-enlist. If death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costume and come back as a new character... Would you slow down? August/September, 1973

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 2 hours ago
I've fallen behind again, and so this will be a catch up post leading into the major events of October. The Spiro Agnew story finally broke publicly in August, leading to a drawn out set of negotiations, feints, and jousting. Agnew battled through August and into September, but it was no good. He even attempted, at one point, to get the House to open impeachment proceedings against him, presumably figuring that party loyalty might save him in the Senate. But he was thwarted in that one by Majority Leader Tip O'Neill, who had, as Fred Emery says, another impeachment in mind. With th... more »

It couldn't be more clear. The damn Republicans broke our government, exactly as they promised to do on the day President Obama was sworn into office. And that public announcement was not made by the crackpot caucus. As Steve Benen said: "Blame both sides" instincts notwithstanding, there's an objective truth here for those willing to acknowledge it. The trouble with wood flooringWood flooring can be a gorgeous addition to any home, as wood is often both more beautiful than carpeting and also more durable. A good wood floor can improve the property value of your home as well, and as wood floors are relatively easy to install, the cost of making the switch is relatively low. However, as with any major change to your home, wood floors present unique challenges to the homeowner. One of your biggest concerns when installing a wood floor may be the environmental impact of the change, since the creation of a beautiful hardwood floor r... more »

From right doing, right work naturally flows. It is understandable if one has had to keep working at a fast-food place to help support one's children, but one must also keep an eye out for a better livelihood, as fast-food places poison the population. In general few *jobs* meet this principle, as the world system has grown toward wage slavery to enrich those already rich, to most of whom the prospect of such enrichment doing harm to the population is of little or no concern. Publication of the IPCC AR4 in 2007 was received with international acclaim....Six and a half years later and a week before the release of the IPCC 5thAssessment Report (AR5), substantial criticisms are being made of leaked versions of the Report as well as of the IPCC process itself... What happened? The IPCC was seriously tarnished by the unauthorized release of emails from the University of East Anglia in November 2009, known as Climategate. These emails revealed the ‘sausage making’ involved in the IPCC’s consensus building process, including denial of data access to individua... more »

Right doing

* ** *Key to understanding why there are eight parts to the long-established Buddhist way and twelve principles to the more recent Permaculture way is this concept of "right doing." If we are alive, we do some things. But perhaps some of them are thoughtless things. Then it behooves us to think this through. To do well, it may help to have (and keep to) a plan. (If we are uncomfortable calling what we do by the names given here, we may use other names. The important thing is the action.) The Buddhist way may in general practice be reduced to the Golden Rule: do not do to others wh... more »

Security Going From Bad To Worse In Iraq

The security situation in Iraq is already bad, but recent anecdotal stories could be pointing to things getting much worse. In Basra, there are reports of threats and killings of Sunnis in retaliation for attacks upon Shiites in the rest of the country. In Diyala and Dhi Qar there have been stories of families fleeing intimidation, while in Baghdad an angry mob burned a suspected suicide bomber and bodies have been found dumped and executed. I do recommend everyone read Sarah Binder's explainer about the parliamentary situation with the CR and defunding. But I do want to add my two cents to one aspect of this that's had some people talking. I don't think it will make any real difference at all that technically the defunders are asking Republican Senators to filibuster a bill which, at that point, will actually contain the provision they want. Nor, come to think of it, should it. On whether it will make a difference: c'mon. The main audience for this whole thing is the Fox News/Limbaugh conservative marketplace. If they ... more »

* * *“The Government Shutdown Boomerang“* by Robert Kuttner “Now it gets really interesting. Republicans in the House are determined to shut down the government, by holding defunding of Obamacare hostage for continued funding of the rest of the budget. In past budget negotiations, Obama has often been too quick to fold a strong hand. But this time, the Tea Party badly miscalculated. They targeted Obama's personal crown jewel, the one piece of progressive social legislation that the president won't throw under the bus. So a showdown is increasingly likely, and Democrats could well... more »

This is from the US, but it concerns every Canadian along with every USian. From *The Nation*, emphasis mine. The Nation’s interactive database of civilian casualties in Afghanistan is an attempt to compile as complete a list as possible of all known civilian deaths that have occurred in the country as a result of war-related actions by the United States, *its allies* and Afghan government forces, from the invasion in October of 2001 through the end of 2012. See a summary of the database here, and the interactive database itself here .

Right desire

risa bear at A Way to Live - 1 day ago
Desire is sometimes given a bad rap by good and thoughtful people. That's because it is conflated with acquisitiveness. We often wish to accrue money, fame, a lover, electronic toys, a car. But surely it is not wrong to *desire *health, cleanliness, comradeship, companionship, mercy, and justice for ourselves and others. So, right desire can be the motivator toward living a principled and clarified life. We see by this how far from these good things we can be led by advertising, propaganda, and selected "news" -- which may be but advertising and propaganda put forth by the unprinc... more »

We begin by seeing our mistake. The universe with all that is in it is one thing. This is why it is right to resist the spreading of poisons in agriculture, the land, the skies, the sea, and in our cities, and to resist the spreading of fear and of war. The cause of the spreading of poisons, fear and war is the lack of accountability due to greed, and the correction of this sickness is accountability -- accepting responsibility for both the visible and invisible costs of our actions, and adjusting those actions accordingly, so that we may act with clarity and justice. OK, a little light relief is needed, courtesy of Tommy Cooper. *A man walks into a bar with a roll of tarmac under his arm and says: "Pint please, and one for the road."* *A dyslexic man walks into a bra.* *A sandwich walks into a bar. The barman says "Sorry we don't serve food in here."* *A jump lead walks into a bar. The barman says "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."*

The Nairobi terrorist attack

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 1 day ago
CNN breaking news last night: 'Al-Shabaab tweets that all Muslims were escorted out of Nairobi mall before violence, says it won't negotiate.' Racist terrorist murderers? No, the BBC prefer to describe them thus 'The Somali militant group al-Shabab has said it carried out the attack.' The BBC just disgust me more each day. Latest figures for this latest Islamist terrorist atrocity is that Thirty-nine people are dead and 293 have been treated at area hospitals.

I see the BBC are desperately spinning on behalf of Ed Miliband this morning

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 1 day ago
The BBC happily report without any querying that '*Ed Miliband 'urged Brown to sack Damian McBride'* Ed Miliband says he urged Gordon Brown to sack Damian McBride over concerns the spin doctor was briefing against senior Labour colleagues. Mr McBride, who worked for Mr Brown, admits in a new book that he leaked stories to smear the ex-PM's opponents. Mr Miliband - who worked with Mr McBride at the Treasury - said he had been "worried" about his activities. And he had urged Mr Brown to get rid of the spin doctor, the Labour leader said in an interview with Andrew Marr.' Really... more »

Deliberately obscure BBC reporting about Kenya?

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
The conservative PJ Media website has posted a blistering hatchet-job on the BBC News website's reporting of the massacre in Kenya. The author admits he's frozen a moment in an ever-shifting news stream, analysing a single variant of repeatedly updated report - and you can see all the variations in this article at NewsSniffer - but he spells out his evidence that the version of the BBC article in question is, at best, badly-written and, at worst, deliberately obscure and misleading. The claim being made is that the BBC deliberately misreported these attacks by using an obscure a... more »

http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-valley/technology/323793-snowden-leaks-help-nsa-critics-in-legal-fights Snowden leaks help NSA critics in government surveillance lawsuits For years, the government has successfully suppressed lawsuits by civil liberties groups challenging the constitutionality of its surveillance programs. But the leaks by Edward Snowden have eroded the government's key legal defense and could mean that questions over whether the National Security Agency is breaking the law will be decided in open court. "No matter what you think of the lawfulness of these progra... more »

A tale of two nations and two different maladjustments / economic perversions - first in the US , a look at how the food stamp program has devolved ( as discussed , perversion include excess food stamp selling at the end of the month , as well as JP Morgan handling / profiting from the food stamp program - profiting from the pain and misery of those less fortunate ) ... second , the economic maladjustment of China rapidly growing ghost cities......Both maladjustments reflect and expose deep maladies in both societies and the consequences for both nations are far reaching and profound !

From that point it developed a positive bias that accelerated as the FOMC announcement approached. And then a minute or two before the actual announcement was made, the gold price blasted off, reaching an interim high about fifteen minutes later. From there it traded s... more »
