A Plea for Caution From Russia
Vladimir Putin
New York Times
Recent events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the
American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a
time of insufficient communication between our societies.
Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against
each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated
the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United
Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever
happening again.
The United Nations’ founders understood ... more »
Who caused the global financial crisis? An inconvenient truth.
*Guest post by Vinay Kolhatkar*
Who caused the global financial crisis? You must surely have heard the
wrong explanation, something that goes like this:
1. American banks knowingly sold unrepayable home loans to a gullible
public;
2. Unregulated Wall Street greed resulted in poor investments being sold
to retirement funds the world over;
3. Credit derivatives, collateralised debt obligations (CDOs), and
credit default swaps, were evil toxic securities created by banks which led
to a huge loss of wealth;
4. This house of cards collapsed, leading to corpor... more »
Ahmad Abu Layl: A child soldier in Syria
Children in war-torn Syria. I am not in favour of American strikes as it
will simply kill more civilians and may solve nothing. But the world,
especially U.S. and Russia, must do something to end this tragedy in
progress. If Iran can be brought into the negotiations it may work.

I haven’t worked a “real job” since being an undergrad. However, I often

jobs. I recently asked my former PhD student, Kate Kidder, a research

Taking a Green Vacation
Have you ever caught yourself thinking that certain rules can be relaxed
when doing something special, like taking a vacation? We often allow
ourselves to indulge ... perhaps eating less-than-healthy foods or spending
a bit more money than usual. It is, after all, a special time and meant to
be a break from the "norm".

Quote of the day: “9/11 was not a ‘tragedy.’ It was an act of war …”
“On Dec 7, 1941 Japan attacked the United States. We
fought in multiple theatres, against industrialised war
machines. In less than 4 years, we won unconditional victory.
“On Sep 11, 2001 something happened. We lit candles,
but bickered over what and who. We fought against a
tactic, and for the ‘hearts and minds’ of our enemies.
12 years later, we can’t even define victory. We are now
considering helping an enemy take over Syria.
“9/11 was not a ‘tragedy.’ It was an act of war. The
endless denial, appeasement, flailing, and conspiracy
theories are the tragedy.”

A system based almost entirely on fraud
There's another important anniversary at this time of year. Five years ago
this week the Banksters crashed our economy, basically by lying and
stealing. Their "punishment" cost trillions. Out of our pockets, not
theirs.
In summary, the financial industry collectively decided that you could fund
economic growth despite stagnant wages through piling on mountains of debt.
But when it all went bad, the solution wasn’t to rebalance the economy, to
get money into the hands of ordinary workers and preference wages over
assets. The solution was to point a fire hose of money at the people w... more »

Election campaigns, however, are really awful venues for unveiling

There's something at once wrong and frightening about the fervent

it rests on the false pretence that Sept. 11 was a defining moment that
changed everything, for everyone.
And frightening because it is being used to justify mindless conformity,
an erosion of individual rights in favour of the state -- and even war.

A licence to extend the state's power
There's something at once wrong and frightening about the fervent
celebration of the attacks on the United States one year ago.Wrong, because
it rests on the false pretence that Sept. 11 was a defining moment that
changed everything, for everyone.
And frightening because it is being used to justify mindless conformity, an
erosion of individual rights in favour of the state -- and even war.
It was a terrible day. But most people have placed that devastating event

How Important Is The House CR?
Brian Beutler has a smart item up about how GOP obsession with Obamacare

However, I think he puts too much emphasis on the importance of what
Republicans pass (or don't pass) out of the House. Here's Beutler:
If 218 Republicans could ignore their White Whale for just a moment and
pass the House bill, Senate Democrats would kill the provision to defund
the health care law, but probably be stuck with Republican spending levels.

Ms Rolnik has entered the political fray here, denouncing the British

THE OBAMA SPEECH ON SYRIA: A GREEN LIGHT TO THE ISRAELIS
The Obama speech to the American people and the world, delivered on the
eve of the twelfth anniversary of 9/11, was very carefully crafted and
designed to appeal to public opinion while leaving the ball still firmly in
his court. He reminded the world he is still commander in chief and is only
going to Congress for what he considers ideological reasons that reflect
the democratic nature of the American nation. He laid out past precedents
for going to war without Congressional approval leaving the door open for
him to make such a decision if circumstances dictated.

It's good that Wan briefly introduced what the Institute for Democracy and

made it clear that their goal is to "make markets work for the poor."

Missing persons in Canada
There are about 7,000 missing people in Canada at any given time. Of those
perhaps a sixth of the adults have mental or drug issues -- the rest are
missing due to other causes.
Sometimes these are benign -- people who leave and seek a new start --
others quite the contrary -- murder victims whose bodies are not found.
Most are people involved in accidents or arrested or for some other reason
kept out of reach of their family for a brief period.
Regardless, missing people cause enormous heartache and anxiety -- the lack
of information can devastate families.

Philosophy: It’s a matter of life and death
Philosophy isn’t just an abstract subject for otherwise unemployable nerds

away from respecting objective reality and instead embraces the concept of

judgement, and instead embraces consensus; or moves away from respecting
individual rights and peaceful cooperation, and instead begins to embrace
authoritarianism and state control.
