4:00pm MDSTseptember 28: global action for accessible, safe, and legal abortion
Today, September 28, women all over the world are taking action to demand
the right to accessible, safe, and legal abortion.
Women and our allies in more than 50 countries have formed a global
mobilization that seeks to decriminalize abortion, provide access to safe
and affordable abortion services, and end the stigma and discrimination
against women who choose to have an abortion.
This campaign, which started more than 20 years ago in Latin America and
the Caribbean, has become a global day of action, as we recognize that
women are the world continue to be denied access to safe a... more »
The Republican Party Is Now Distilled Down To A Ransom Note To America
Suicide bomber vests strapped to their chests, congressional Republicans
have a message for the American people: "Give us our way, or we'll blow the
whole damn thing up!" And by their way, they're talking about a lot more
than defunding the Affordable Care Act. Yesterday, the *NY Times* Editorial
Board was aghast at the Republican demands-- and they called it what it is A
Republican Ransom Note.
We’ll refrain from deliberately sabotaging the global economy, Speaker John
Boehner and the other leaders said, if President Obama allows more oil

Pretty much no—they are not. Consider one example from Amanda Ripley’s
interesting new book, The Smartest Kids in the World.
In the talented Ripley’s scam-ridden book, “the Polish miracle” (Ripley’s

American students showed more improvement on the PISA’s three tests than

The Politics of the Marriage Tax Breaks
The Conservatives are a desperate party led by a desperate man. The stars
are not lining up for an election victory in 2015, despite a summer of
awful headlines for the Labour leader; and Dave finds himself with little
room for manoeuvre now Ed has pledged action on the issues that matter
outside the Westminster circus. To grab the headlines and the attentions of
the voters, this weekend's Conservative Party conference needed something
bold and something that would save people a packet of cash.
Hence the marriage tax break. Of course, not every married couple in the

Evo Morales asks for a transfer of UN Headquarters to a more neutral country
In today's *El Diario/La Prensa*, (p. 11) there appears an article about
Evo Morales asking that the location of the United Nations headquarters be
changed to a 'neutral nation.' Given the complicity of the UN in CIA
agression against Latin American countries, going back as far as 1954 when
United Fruit took over in Central America, this is a most reasonable
request. Switzerland, with its neutrality,
might be a far better choice. Morales then suggests that if they do not

New Jersey's Gubernatorial Election Is Just Over A Month Away... And Chris Christie Is Still A Disaster
Let me say that Blue America has enthusiastically endorsed state Senator

How Bill Gates Views the World (And Why It’s a Problem)
Money is power.
Power is money.
Bill Gates has too much of both.
Valerie Strauss gets it—that Bill Gates is not what education needs:
“Education reform should not be driven by private philanthropists with

Ultimately, the problem is Gates’s view of the world. And there is no
better way to express that view than the chess scene in Mel Brooks’s *History

To Gates, this is a game; he has no real consequences before him.

The Awakening
A time comes in your life when you finally get…when, in the midst of all
your fears and insanity, you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the
voice inside your head cries out…ENOUGH1 Enough fighting and crying and
blaming and struggling to hold on. Then, like a child quieting down after a
tantrum, you blink back your tears and begin to look at the world through
new eyes.
This is your awakening.
You realize it’s time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change,
or for happiness, safety and security to magically appear over the next
horizon.

Who's to blame for increased energy bills?
So British Gas profits account for some 4.1% of the bill but the cost of
government environmental policies, as introduced by Ed Miliband during the
last Labour government accounts for some 9.4%. Now where could we make the
largest savings?
Arctic Ice Cap Growing at Tremendous Rate
Putting the truth of climate change into the public arena.
'Six years ago, the BBC reported that the Arctic, due to global warming,
would be ice-free by this summer. That, clearly, has not happened. What has
happened, instead, is that the Arctic ice cap has grown at a tremendous
rate, by almost a million square miles. In other words, it has grown by a
whopping 60%, due to constantly repeating periodic ocean cycles.
What explains the rapid growth of the Arctic ice cap?
The Arctic summer has been a chillier than usual one, which has helped the
ice cap rebound from its record low just... more »

CiF Watch prompts Guardian correction #2: Evidently, Jewish ‘extremists’ didn’t enter the mosque | CiF Watch
Another example of Cifwatch managing to get The Guardian to correct an

Temple Mount, which is the holiest place in Judaism), all non-Muslims

The Daily News reported that "Less than half of Americans read for fun last
year, National Endowment for the Arts survey shows" (Sept. 26).
This is not quite accurate.
The NEA reported that 54.5% of those surveyed said they read at least one
book last year, nearly identical to the results of the 2008 survey. About
47% said they read at least one work of "literature" (novels, poetry,
plays) last year, about a 3% dip from 2008; much of this was a decline in
reading poetry.

"On September 19, I received some welcome encouragement from an unexpected
source. The Governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter, telephoned me and expressed
his sympathy over the abuse I was suffering from the prosecutors and my own

I had become friends through my work as a link between the White House and

I told Carter I felt as if I was "fighting a division with a platoon." He
urged me to keep up the battle, and not to resign under fire. When he told

Establishment Republicans Move To Take Out Principled Libertarian Justin Amash
The Republican base is restive. They're also dumber than a pile of dog

findings could only surprise someone who considers Tea Party-type

Molten Salt Reactors
My September 26 post which offered a link to a video of a recent David
LeBlanc narrative in which he offers an excellent account of a probable
direction of Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) development. David is a brilliant
reactor scientist, who is working to develop commercial MSR technologies.
David's current view is that commercial MSRs using ORNL technology are
possible in the near term, while thorium breeders will require a longer
gestation period.
There are good reasons for developing Uranium fueled MSR and Denatured MSRs

The whole Guergis scandal is a bit fuzzy this far on but, as I recall, she
was unceremoniously dumped from the Tory caucus against her will, on the

Court Says Lactation Is Related to Pregnancy, Refrains From Saying, "Duh"
I wrote about a really stupid case out of Texas where a federal court said
that "lactation is not pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical

Lactation not related to pregnancy and childbirth? Really?
Well, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals which, to its credit, refrained from
saying, "Well, duh," has unanimously ruled that lactation is, indeed,
related to pregnancy and is therefore covered by Title VII. EEOC reports
