I was going to argue with Jonathan Chait over the question of why college
football is popular when minor league sports are not, but Scott Lemieux
beat me to it and basically nailed it.
Chait:
[I]f college sports would work just as well if it’s turned into a minor
league, why aren’t minor-league sports popular? I can’t think of a single
example anywhere in the world of a minor-league sport that even approaches
the popularity of the major-league version.
The reason college athletics is the sole exception is that it’s college
athletics, and not a minor-league sport. The top 500 colleg... more »

1. Do whatever you can to work for her pardon. You can sign the petition to

You have to create an account, but that only takes a few moments, and the
form accepts Canadian postal codes. Please sign and share widely.
2. Write her. According to her support team, she's looking forward to being
able to correspond with her supporters for the first time. The mailing

Usually, she can at least explain where she was when the fake quotation

Did she talk to Bill de Blasio’s wife at the Good Times coffee shop, the

This article fills in many of the blanks regarding alkaline therapy and
pretty well places it on the go to list for all cancer victims.
In fact, the absolute first step for a victim is to immediately convert to

successful outcome.
We have also posted on maple sugar and baking soda which may be an

No scientist wishes to wake up in the morning to discover he has been had

Thus the inevitable review leads to the inevitable retraction and a direct

this is now the daily pattern of our so called pharmaceutical industry.
Our only defense is the rapid expansion of medical research outside theses

Islam has done a poor job of shedding outright criminality, most of which

Here we have the completely bizarre case of an actual fatah been issued

Nuclear Decay Model
arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
Now that I have a tentative lotus like model for the progressive design of
our elemental table, it is possible to address the key aspect of nuclear
decay. What I propose there is that as the nucleus becomes larger,
electron packing around the center of the lotus tightens increasing the
possibility of an electron discharging its separation energy along the axis
of attachment and allowing that electron to rejoin the proton to produce a
neutron. This immediately produces a neutron imbalance and a drop to the
next slot in the periodic table. This is elegant and natural and will l... more »

However, once we have done that much, it should be much easier to create a

Feast of the Assumption, a Holy Day of Obligation, when Catholics are
required to attend Mass. For those not familiar with Catholic doctrine, the
Assumption refers to the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, at the end
of her earthly existence, was assumed bodily and uncorrupted into Heaven.
The belief has an ancient history, but was only declared an infallible
dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Whet... more »

Cockfighting Romanian Royalty In Oregon

The Pretenders; the royal cockfighter is on the left
Today everyone in Europe is complaining about the influx of Romanians into
their countries. Since Romania joined the EU, there are no borders to keep
them out and because there are a lot of poor Romanians, they are drawn to
the wealthier countries like Germany, Britain, Holland, Italy, France.
Europeans talk about them the way they used to talk about Moroccans and
Algerians and the way Republican xenophobes and racists like Steve King and
Dana Rohrabacher talk about Mexicans. Everything from "they're primitive

"If you were to take a comparative look back at our planet during the 1950s
from some sort of cosmic time-traveling orbiter cube, you would probably
first notice that millions of pieces of space trash had disappeared from
orbit. The moon would appear six and a half feet closer to Earth, and the
continents of Europe and North America would be four feet closer together.
Zooming in, you would be able to spot some of the results of the Golden Age

A while back, I saw a blog post angrily asking why everyone referred to
Bradley Manning as a man when it is "known" that he is trans. The answer is
simple: out of respect. That's how Manning was identifying. Period.
Anything else was rumour.
Now that Manning's court martial (fake trial) is over, she has come out as
a transwoman. So now we can refer to Chelsea Manning with the same respect.
From Chase Madar, in *The Nation*:
*Update, 8/22/2013:* *Yesterday, Bradley Manning was sentenced to 35 years
in prison.* *Today, Chelsea Elizabeth Manning announced through her lawyer

Fukushima updates - August 20 -21 , 2013 - Just one day admitting a " minor " leak of 300 tons of highly contaminated radioactive water - Tepco drops more bombshells - they have 350 MORE tanks similar to the one presently leaking , which has a rubber seal rather than welded seals ! And just how could they measure the leakage accurately - the water gauge is 4 tanks away ? Meanwhile , the world watches as the ground becomes more unstable , perhaps liquid like in the area near the Sea - we are seeing a catastrophe unfold in relentless fashion that neither Tepco nor Japan has a clue how to address ! We just need a decent strength quake at this point for the endgame scenario to come into play .....

Two articles. Two broadly similar points. In the first place is James
Bloodsworth's piece for the *New Statesman* that makes what should be an
uncontroversial observation: that "backward" attitudes among working class
people toward immigration and social security stems from competition with
and close social proximity to migrants and recipients of the dole. Hell's
bells, even someone as unoriginal as me has occasionally made the same
points. Perhaps it is symptomatic of the estrangement James talks about
that his piece was shared widely on social media. Unfortunately, the

"The chart below will likely come as a surprise to most. It shows total
nominal US defense spending, more importantly it shows that such spending
has been rapidly declining since 2010. And while on the surface it is great
news the US is becoming more "pacifist" (apparently mass killings using
drones are relatively cost-effective) and the result for the US is even
better as it means lower deficits, there is one person who is very unhappy
with this outcome- Ben Bernanke.
Why is Ben unhappy? Simple- as a remind... more »
