Sunday Classics' Great Moments in Music History: Arnold Schoenberg, the movie mogul, and the mogul's "boys"

*Schoenberg, seen in a 1910 self-portrait (Yes, he was also a painter)* *by Ken* Or we could call this installment of Great Moments in Music History: "The Day Arnold Schoenberg's career as a Hollywood film composer began and ended." As I mentioned last week, I've been reading the second part of Arthur Rubinstein's autobiography, *My Many Years*. And as I also mentioned, Rubinstein seems to have known just about everybody in the world of the arts (not just music) through most of his career. In October 1939, with Poland already fallen to the German *Blitzkrieg* that set off World W... more »

Obama Promises "Limited" And "Narrow" Strikes Against Syria

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 46 minutes ago
War is not a casual affair. But the way President Obama speaks you'd think America is just going for a stroll in the park. This is criminal and irresponsible leadership. If you are going to go to war, state your reasons, provide the evidence for the other side's wrongdoing, explain why there are no peaceful avenues, and then bomb the shit out of the enemy. But, this is not Obama's approach. He has not provided any evidence, he is barely stating his reasons why he wants to attack Syria other than repeating the lie about Assad using chemical weapons, he is not serious about making... more »

Will Obama Intervene In Israel When It Uses Chemical Weapons Against Palestinians?

Strong nations want to protect the weak against chemical weapons used by immoral states? Sounds good. No one should have any problem with this sound moral, political, and legal response to a crime against humanity. But, how can nations like France, England, and America honestly say that they are interested in protecting the weak and punishing immoral states for using chemical weapons when their record suggests otherwise? *French companies gave Saddam's regime poison gas in the 1980s*, so France needs some explaining to do before it lectures Assad. U.S. WANTS TO BE JUDGE, JURY AND EXECUTIONER OVER SYRIA GASSINGS

US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that, having considered the evidence presented in a Government Assessment released yesterday, the US will punish the Syrian government for its alleged use of chemical weapons in Damascus on 21 August 2013. The US government has taken it upon itself to act as judge, jury and executioner over the Syria gassings. One type of TV show that I enjoy are detective murder mysteries. I don't watch them all - that would be nearly impossible, Netflix carries so many - but I'm always looking for detective shows that I find absorbing. "Inspector Lewis" is probably my favourite. I loved "Prime Suspect", Helen Mirren's tour de force. I'm in the middle of "Wallander", recommended by a few wmtc readers, although I'm watching the BBC version with Kenneth Branagh, not the original Swedish show. "Case Histories", featuring Jason Isaacs as private investigator Jackson Brodie, is another one I enjoy. And I've s... more »

Can Domestic Spying And The Big Brother Question Topple Oklahoma Republican James Lankford?

Tuesday, Blue America endorsed Tom Guild, the very grassroots progressive Democrat in Oklahoma City running an uphill battle against radical right extremist James Lankford. We decided to get involved with this race primarily because of Tom's strong pro-family positions on a broad array of economic justice issues and because of his courageousness in facing down the anti-democracy/anti-equality forces in his state. But there's another issue brewing in OK-05 as well, and it revolves around Lankford's vote in favor of the NSA and domestic spying. Oklahoma voters have been trained to s... more »

This clairvoyance was observed last Sunday when Ross Douthat wrote a (rather fuzzy) column in the New York Times. Douthat identifies as a conservative. Beijing: No excuse for strikes

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 17 hours ago
*Editor's Note:* *This op-ed recently appeared in the China Daily, and is reflective of Beijing's official stance on Western military intervention in the Syrian conflict. After the international humiliation of the NSA leaks, the United States would surely find itself increasingly isolated in diplomatic channels if it went ahead and intervened in Syria outside of international law and under false pretenses. * As the United States and its Western allies have made it clear they believe the Syrian government used chemical weapons on the outskirts of Damascus, there is growing speculati... more »

The Polarisation of the Civic Library?

In stark contrast to the new £188 million Library of Birmingham, we read of yet more cuts of some 20% to library service budgets in Anglesey, of potential closures to local libraries in Southend and across Lincolnshire and many other areas. Over 200 libraries have closed over the last year and Library campaigners are predicting some 400 closures in the next three years. Southend however are not just closing libraries but are spending 27 million on The Forum, a state-of-the-art library being delivered by the Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College. Tiny Rowland

Secretive, ruthless and contemptuous of anything that smacked of "Establishment hypocrisy", Rowland made few concessions to accepted principles of corporate governance, and none at all to public relations. In 1973 his methods were condemned by Edward Heath, the Prime Minister, as "an unpleasant and unacceptable face of capitalism". His later career was marked by a series of vendettas - notably against the Fayed brothers - which he pursued with cold, obsessive fury. But to an army of small shareholders, well satisfied with their dividends, Rowland was a hero, tarnished only by L... more »

“We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars... everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings. All the greatest people ever lived have been telling us that for five thousand years and yet you’d be surprised how people are always losing hold of it. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human being. - Thornton Wilder
