*THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2013*
*One of our favorite pet peeves:* It has long been one of our favorite pet
peeves.
It’s also a problem which infests the journalistic treatment of academic
studies, such as they are.
The problem doesn’t quite have a name. So let’s get started with a tease
from Tuesday night’s All In.
At one point, Chris Hayes teased an upcoming segment. This is what he said:
HAYES (8/13/13): *White people don’t like affirmative action unless they’re
getting something out of it.* I’ll explain coming up.
Could that possibly be true? That’s what you might call a sweeping ... more »

Sugar is deadly.
I'm so lucky. While staying at a house in the country near a tiny village

Chris Hedges on "Murdering the Wretched of the Earth"
There's a reason the Muslim poor flock to radical Islam, several reasons in
fact. They've been discussed at length before but Chris Hedges, in light
of the massacres ongoing in Egypt, recaps:
*Radical Islam is the last refuge of the Muslim poor. The mandated five
prayers a day give the only real structure to the lives of impoverished
believers. The careful rituals of washing before prayers in the mosque, the
strict moral code that prohibits alcohol, along with the understanding that
life has an ultimate purpose and meaning, keep hundreds of millions of

The Power of Apocalyptic Thinking
If you pay much attention to what's going on in the world, if you try to
stay on top of science and research, your worldview is bound to become a
bit apocalyptic. Things, just about all of 'em, are trending the wrong
way. I wish it wasn't so but it is.
That's why I found it interesting to read Hal Niedzviecki's op-ed in *The
Guardian *exploring the case for thinking apocalyptically. Here are a few
excerpts:

Another approach would be to harvest it for the solar dehydrator.

Now, anti-abortion groups in the state have come up with a new argument for

Three Centuries of Drought Brought Down the Cradle of Civilization
French archeologists believe they have discovered the true cause of the
collapse of societies in Egypt, Turkey, Greece and the Middle East three
thousand years ago. Until now this was attributed to the invasion and

due to a 300-year drought that hit the Mediterranean. Their conclusion is
that it was climate change, not sea people, that destroyed those
civilizations. From *The Australian:*

News Emerges of Iraq’s Kurdistan Trucking Oil To Iran Again

For the last several years the media has found examples of the Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG) smuggling oil to Iran. This adds to its conflict
with Baghdad, which wants to control the country’s energy policy, and with
Western countries that have imposed sanctions on Tehran for its nuclear

operating for at least the last two decades there is no reason for them to

years.

Mining 30: Some Conceptual Considerations in Mining Tax

There are several proposals to amend the mining tax policy as contained in

Tuesday, conservative polemicist Byron York was worrying the Republicans

competent, they could.
Republicans haven't worried about losing the House because, first, having
won by a landslide in 2010, they got to control the redistricting process,
and they have used that power to draw districts that give them an
advantage. Second, Barack Obama, having won re-election, is not
particularly popular, and his ratings could slip further by November 2014.
And third, history teaches that the presidential party just d... more »

Suggestions that the Syrian rebel factions unify into a “National Free
Army” seem more unlikely than ever today, after another major conflict
between two rebel factions, with al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) fighters attacking
the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
The fighting took place in Raqqa, where AQI fighters overran the FSA’s

dimanno: let's make sochi the gay games
When I read Stephen Fry's open letter to the IOC, and the continued calls
to boycott or move the Sochi Games because of the horrendous and
institutionalized homophobic violence within Russia, I couldn't help but
think of the Beijing Games. I absolutely understand the uproar over
Russia's anti-gay laws, and I agree, of course. But did the same people

The Wisdom of St. John Of The Cross
Born: 1542
Born in Spain in 1542, John learned the importance of self-sacrificing love
from his parents. His father gave up wealth, status, and comfort when he
married a weaver's daughter and was disowned by his noble family. After his
father died, his mother kept the destitute family together as they wandered
homeless in search of work. These were the examples of sacrifice that John
followed with his own great love -- God.
Annals of Austerity FAIL, Eurozone Redux
July 31 saw the latest release of European Union unemployment numbers, and
Monday's gross domestic product figures brought no joy, especially for
Greece. As Think Progress reports, Greek unemployment hit a new record of
27.6 % in May, while Spain's June unemployment figure was 26.3%, according
to Eurostat. As the world's biggest experiment in austerity, the European
Union continues to prove a failure. Below is the Eurostat figure for

Bahrain protests: Will the House of Khalifa fall like a house of cards?

Mass protests in Bahrain are by no means a sectarian conflict, though they
threaten to further entrench political polarization and serve as an ugly
thorn in the Bahraini monarchy’s side unless they hear the popular calls
for constitutional reform. Despite Bahraini PM Sheikh al-Khalifa’s warning
to pro-democracy activists that they face longer prison sentences and the
stripping of their citizenship if they take part in August 14’s scheduled
opposition rally, protesters are expected to take to the streets en masse.

Before 2002, councils were constrained to only do what they were empowered

Hate Talk Radio Fading-- At Least In Terms Of Demos Advertisers Are Interested In

very old, bitter white males listen to Hate Talk Radio (and Fox News). It's

It’s a lesson every big city planner needs to learn too:
Cities are made from the bottom up. They’re organic. They develop with each
individual decision about each individual building, letting the energy of a

to develop in a way that reflects the reasons for that valuation.
It’s the release of an abundant creative energy reflected in concrete form

What could possibly save Egypt?
News overnight that Egyptians are being killed en-masse by their government

Sixty years of state brutality has suppressed violent Islamism, but not

failed—delivering at first the radical Islamism the majority seem to want,
and now a return to the brutal suppression that has characterised too much
of “modern Egypt.”
So how to save Egypt—and the few liberals there that are the only genuine

Thoughts for the Brain - language and stuff
English is the closest thing to a global lingua franca. This state of
affairs was established by two successive global empires, numerous wars,
occupations etc, centuries of oppression and exploitation. It is testament
to Walter Benjamin’s observation that each document of civilisation is
simultaneously one of barbarism.
One thousand years ago English did not exist. Five hundred years ago it was
of little account; it did not even encompass what is now known as England.

*Tabloidy star likes to clown:* Unless you enjoy watching millionaires
making convincing chicken sounds, Rachel Maddow is increasingly a
waste-of-time hack. (For link to clucks, see below.)
In recent weeks, Maddow has been telling a tabloidized tale about the death

was an associate of Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

The Ghosts That Haunt Pam Wallin
Pam Wallin wants you to know one thing - she will gladly pay back every

I believe she couldn't write that cheque fast enough.
There's something missing. It's the creaking noise from Pam's knees as she
supplicates herself, pleading for mercy. It's not the money, well not any

reputational Armageddon. That, and of course, the prospect of wracking up
a criminal conviction or two in the process. She wants somebody to take

Here is how it begins:
Last month I was invited to testify before a hearing of the US Senate's

It is a privilege to be called upon to share one's expertise with policy

Insurgent Attacks And Technical Problems Beset Iraq’s Northern Pipeline To Turkey Cutting Into Exports
