Couldn't the Syrian government find another public spokesman to deliver this very sane and reasonable message? This cross-eyed four-eyes makes the viewer dizzy just by looking at him. They should do what the Americans do, have a hot babe deliver government messages, or at least someone who is not cross-eyed, because it deflects from the main message. La Bestia's victims and the desperate quest to reach North America

paul at Paying attention - 29 minutes ago
I’ve written about how desperate Hondurans are to make it to North America, about the risks they take, including riding La Bestia, a freight line through Mexico. Early yesterday morning, the train derailed. The stories are still developing, but people died, were maimed and are missing. The papers say about 250 Hondurans among the hundreds riding on top and between the freight cars. One man quoted said the people who died had tied themselves to the train for safety, and couldn’t jump during the slow-motion wreck. None of this will slow the hundreds of Hondurans who leave every day to ... more »

Greenland Dreams

I recently took a mental voyage to Greenland, which began when I read Knud Rasmussen’s book, The People of the Polar North, published in 1908. Rasmussen (1879–1933) was born and raised in Greenland, the son of a Danish minister and his Danish-Eskimo wife. Most of Knud’s buddies were Eskimos (Inuit), and he fluently spoke both languages. The family moved to Denmark when Knud was 14, and he soon realized that the wild frontier was far more healthy and alive than the noisy crazy crowds of civilization. At the age of 23, he eagerly returned to Greenland. His mission was to document... more »

*MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2013* *Especially compared to the Times:* Two weeks ago, the New York Times published a giant front-page report about the Clinton foundation. The report ran 2961 words. It was accompanied by a large and pointless Venn diagram, helping you limn the tedium of the overlap between all the org’s key players. This report itself was a nothing-burger, stuffed with plenty of hamburger helper. As the Times tends to do in such matters, the report tended to give the impression that something was rotten in the Denmark of the Clintons’ deeply troubling charity org. (Four ye... more »

Melanie Phillips right on the money. '... Indeed, this is why 'political correctness' is not remotely liberal at all, but viciously oppressive. It is simply a mechanism for re-ordering the world according to a particular dogma — and thus inescapably stifles all dissent. Innately hostile to traditional morality, it paves the way for a secular Inquisition in which today's Torquemadas are the ideologues of such group rights — and it is Christians and other religious believers who are the heretics to be silenced by force.' Krugman’s (Probably) Wrong about Apple and Network Externalities

Daniel Nexon at Duck of Minerva - 8 hours ago
Paul Krugman has an op-ed in today’s New York Times in which he likens the rise and decline of technology companies to Ibn Khaldun’s account of the rise and decline of dynasties: success breeds complacency and soon the barbarians are running the show. This happened, he argues, to Microsoft, which once upon a time dominated the Continue reading

Happy Birthday to Chris Pine, 33. He's okay as Kirk, I suppose; not bad enough to keep the first movie from being quite entertaining, but certainly not even remotely good enough to rescue the disaster of the second movie. You know what? I definitely at this point hate Star Trek Into Darkness a lot more than I dislike Phantom Menace. And it's not because I'm going soft on Phantom Menace. Okay, enough of that: much better to think about the good stuff: 1. Joshua Foust on Glenn Greenwald. 2. Are national security types entering electoral politics? No Economic Geniuses

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 9 hours ago
Scott Clark and Peter Devries write that the stated focus of Jim Flaherty's seventh annual "national policy retreat" was job creation and economic growth. The Harper government likes to repeat that those two objectives are -- and always have been -- its reasons for being. But all that talk has not yielded much of either: The economy has been in a growth decline since 2010 — job creation has been dismal. In 2009, real GDP declined by 2.9 per cent and then bounced back in 2010 to 3.3 percent. Since then, growth as been decelerating: to 2.4 per cent in 2011, to 1.7 per cent in 2012 ... more »

Quite seriously, high speed rail links for these distances are excellent solutions using the technology already deployed globally with serious success. By that I mean reaching 200 miles per hour. At the same time delivering 100 miles per hour also works well. Both systems demand modern trackage and an active suspension making the customer experience excellent. WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST: SPONTANEOUS OR CONTRIVED?

It seems the momentum towards escalated war in Syria is shifting from ‘crossing a red line’ to having ‘crossed a red line’ where ‘red line’ has become a euphemism for the point at which the US military will intervene against president Bashir al-Assad. The ‘red line’, in the case of the Syrian civil war, is the use of chemical weapons against civilians by government forces. In the latest incident Syrian rebels have accused the government of using the weapons, an accusation the government strenuously denies saying they have proof that rebels have been manufacturing chemical weapons a... more »

*By MARC McDONALD* If you want someone who rants against "Big Government" and taxes, then extremist radio commentator/right wing hack Mark Levin is your man. His latest book, The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic is another predictable screed against big government and taxes. However, there's one big problem. Levin is a profoundly dishonest pundit. The only "big government" he takes on is that of the Left. What Levin never mentions is that the GOP is *just as fond* of big government programs as the Democrats are. It's just that the GOP is more clever at claiming t... more »

I've run this short video before but with the coming US attack on Syria it's worth playing again. Can there be any doubt who Obama works for? In an interview with Amy Goodman on March 2, 2007, U.S. General Wesley Clark (Ret.), explained that the Bush Administration planned to take out seven countries in five years: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Iran. So, with the pending illegal action against Syria, is the Obama Administration following Bush’s mid-east plan?

Why didn't Hitler use poison gas against Allied forces?

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
During the Second German War both sides expected the other to use poison gas. And both sides were ready to retaliate in kind for the first use of such gas. So why didn't Hitler, especially when things got rough after Stalingrad use poison gas? It certainly was not because he believed only in an ethical war - and he was happy to use poison gas in other contexts. There are three general views, and I incline to the last. First, Hitler had himself been gassed and recognizing the inhumanity of the weapon forbade its use. With another leader I might accept this. Mustard gas, from the ... more »

(And technically: I'm asking for the worst mistake by the US government, or at least the presidency/exec branch, during the Obama presidency. It's always difficult to know, especially in this realm, which are presidential decisions and which are not. But the shorthand is okay most of the time).

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
Here's this week's review of Radio 4's *Sunday*. 7.10 *Introduction*, by Edward Stourton 7.11 *Syria*. Edward talked to Fr. Bases 30 - Mind Control in Britain - Cathi Morgan Part One

Mike Philbin at PROGNOSIS II - 1 day ago
Cathi Morgan gives an update on her research into institutionalised MK Ultra or Mind Control/False Memories involved with Satanic Ritual Abuse in UK, and mentions (recently deceased at age 93) whistleblower T Stokes. Morgan suggests victims of Satanic Ritual abuse have implicated the Princes Philip and Charles, Jimmy Savile and other high-level members of 'civilised society'. People like this always forget that EVERYONE is professionally mind controlled by mainstream coercion and completely indentured to the Corporate War system for PROFIT, every day of their commercialist lives. ... more »
