Is It Too Late?
[image: Image showing sea levels rising as a result of climate change.]
Climate change continues to be a source of concern as worldwide CO2 levels
rise. Here, on Reduce Footprints, we've challenged ourselves to reduce
fossil fuel use in an effort to help lower the numbers. Many of us have
contacted our elected officials asking that they support efforts to reduce
the extraction and burning of fossil fuels. But is it enough? Do our
actions matter? That's the subject of this month's survey.

Democrats Are Unprepared For A Rare Opportunity To Win A Senate Seat In Tennessee
Anti-immigrant Know Nothing Joe Carr (R)
Tennessee's congressional districts are so gerrymandered that Democrats can
only win in the state's two districts that are primarily in big cities,
Nashville and Memphis. And in Nashville, the Democratic incumbent, Jim
Cooper, is a conservative corporate-friendly Blue Dog who votes with the
GOP very frequently. Statewide, it's not as clear cut, although the state
has trended red in recent years. Democrats lost every presidential race in
Tennessee after Bill Clinton's narrow 48-46% win in 1996. And last year,
Obama did worst of all, failing to ... more »

In case you haven't seen it, this link at Democracy Now! has the transcript
of Bradley Manning's statement, read by his lawyer David Coombs, after
Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
The decisions that I made in 2010 were made out of a concern for my country
and the world that we live in. Since the tragic events of 9/11, our country
has been at war. We’ve been at war with an enemy that chooses not to meet
us on any traditional battlefield, and due to this fact we’ve had to alter
our methods of combating the risks posed to us and our way of life.

Where to now for Labour?
Labour leader David Shearer—who was voted in by Labour members only 2 years

That’s putting it mildly.
Over the last two years his caucus colleagues, especially the three listed

have in the open across the aisle at Key.
So where to now for the rudderless Labour Party, under which of the

Amid the devastation of 9/11, the fate of the Winter Garden, the majestic

Political Islam Is A Dead End: Could Egypt Just Be The Beginning?
*Source of Photo*.
Political Islam's solutions to complex economic, social, cultural,
political, spiritual, and other problems comes down to one simple word:
martyrdom. Death is all that political Islam offers to the countries in
which it is the ruling philosophy. In a spiritual and warrior-minded nation
like Iran that message is easier to swallow, but in a materialistic and
secular country like Egypt that has historically been either in the
Communist camp or the American-Western camp in global geopolitics, it is a
no-go.

“A common misconception often quoted by media, politicians, activists is
that violence is on the rise and has historically been much lower.

Has the White House " secretly " suspended US military aid to Egypt ? And , why would the White House attempt to put the suspension on some type of double secret probation - odd ? Or looking at the NY Times piece - has non military aid been stopped , but not military aid ? Is the " secret " decision to cut off Egypt's military and non economic aid the explanation for why the Saudis suddenly declared they would cover the tab for Egypt if the US and EU cut off the country ?

Syria gas attack story has whiff of Saudi war propaganda

The reports of massive chemical attacks in Syria might become the “red

The Middle Eastern newspaper, Al Arabiya, reports that “At least 1,300

on to claim that the Government of President Bashar al Assad was

Plagiarism in UFO Writing
I saw, the other day, in the *Skeptical Inquirer*, an article by Benjamin
Radford about plagiarism in paranormal writing. He was suggesting that some
“writers” lift case reports from others and report as if they are their
own. I know these things happen in the world of the UFO and the one
instance that springs to mind is a line written by Ed Ruppelt in his *The
Report on Unidentified Flying Objects*. In writing about the fabled

estimate they were interplanetary!” (Page 58, Ace paperback).

The science is settled [updated]
Yes, the science is settled.
The acceleration due to gravity at the earth’s surface is 9.8m/s2. That is
settled science. It is what the data says, and it’s the figure on which
scientists, engineers and Newton’s falling apple agree on.
If someone were to say that their model showed a figure for gravitational
acceleration of, say, 32.1 m/s2, then we’d be entitled to call their model
bunk. And we wouldn’t rely on it to build bridges, say, or to calculate
space flight or the launch of a satellite.

The Lost Art of Knowing Stuff
The internet is reshaping our minds. Reconfiguring might be a better

We don't have to commit information to memory as in the past. The web
functions as a replacement for memory. If we need a fact we can use a
search engine. Google or Yahoo or Bing will pull it up, we can read it,
use it and discard it.
There's a real frailty attached to this sort of information sourcing. It's
not the forgetting, it's the not remembering. What does it mean to read

My View of Bradley Manning's Sentence
Today, Bradley Manning received his sentence after having been declared
guilty on 20 of the 21 charges on which he had been put before military
court (several of which he confessed to) for leaking an abundance of

He was acquitted on the charge of aiding and abetting the enemy, which
potentially could have motivated life or even a death sentence. The
prosecutor had moved for 60 years out of the originally 136, eventually
reduced to 90, total maximum years for the crimes for which he was

Will this be the Straw that Break the Back of Non-Intervention in Syria?
There are gruesome reports out of Syria today of a chemical weapons attack
in a suburb of Damascus. If they are accurate, the chemical weapons
inflicted mass civilian causalities. As David Kenner reports at Foreign
Policy: The information coming out of the Ghouta region, where the rebels
enjoy significant support, is still unconfirmed by independent observers.

On the evening of August 20, the Angola 3 legal team filed a request for

Fed Reserve Head job sees long knives come out from supporters of Janet Yellen - White House accused of of anti - Yellen sexism ! Really , what they're saying is the White house and the President will say anything to make Larry Summers look good and empahsize whatever " preceived " flaws Yellin might have ( not being a so called mani team player , being too" thoughtful " and " deliberate " in her thinking than manic , rash and brusque Larry , not being " serious " about spotting bubbles ( like Larry is ? ) It is really embarrassing to see how this process is playing out !

Water, Our Maternal Parent Under Fire
Water, do you realize that we are drinking the same water as the dinosaurs..
As a human fascinated with space, intrigued with our galaxy and the
universe, from supernovas to red giants, we know so little and we know so
much, time and distances seem unreal, unfortunately the madness of
humankind is too real..
If there is one thing science agrees on, the key to planetary life taking
off is water, so what kind of lunatic would propose taking our maternal
parent, yes, for if one thinks about water it is our paternal parent, for
without water none of us would be here..

Why was the charge murder?
The Toronto police officer was charged with murder and not manslaughter
because manslaughter (generally) is a wrongful killing where there was no
intention to kill or cause grievous bodily harm that could kill.
Shoot someone repeatedly cannot possibly be seen as something done without
recognizing grievous bodily harm would result.
That doesn't mean the police officer is guilty - he may well have a defence
of legitimate use of force. But if he is guilty of anything it is not
manslaughter.
Now some law school stuff.
