IS THE ‘BATTALIONS OF AYESHA’ ANOTHER ATTEMPT BY ISRAEL TO SET UP A FAKE ‘AL QAEDA’ GROUP?

The responsibility for the recent bombing attack in Beirut clearly designed to target Hezbollah, has been claimed by a hitherto unheard of group calling itself the ‘Battalions of Ayesha’. The usually reliable news organisation UPI reported that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had blamed Israel for the attack on the basis that it was in retaliation for last weeks explosions that injured four Israeli soldiers that had sneaked into Lebanon on a reconnaissance patrol. However, the BBC has reported that Nasrallah had blamed ‘Sunni Muslim militants’ for the blast seemingly contradictin... more »

‘Bloodbath that is not a bloodbath': Why Egypt is doomed

Pepe Escobar Russia Today Egypt's ‘bloodbath that is not a bloodbath’ has shown that the forces of hardcore suppression and corruption reign supreme, while foreign interests - the House of Saud, Israel and the Pentagon - support the military's merciless strategy. * * *"What Is Your Environmental Ethic?"* by Chet Raymo "A student from Professor Mooney's environmental ethics class came up to me in the College Commons the other day and asked me, "What is your environmental ethic?" Most environmental thinking begins with a distinction between natural and artificial. Natural is the non-human world. Artificial is anything that is the work of human contrivance. The two are seen in opposition. Natural is good. Artificial is bad. The bad is driving out the good. Hence our environmental dilemma. Here again, it seems to me, we are hung up on a fa... more »

Canadian senators are appointed to represent their home province. Although some, like the barnstorming Cavendish Cottager, may appear to represent their party, not the country and not their province, that isn't the obvious intent of the residency requirement. Senators are supposed to spend most of their time in their home province to make themselves accessible to the people of their province, to hear their concerns, so that they can take those thoughts and interests back and represent them in the Senate. Piffle About Taxes

Four years ago, Stephen Harper declared: "I don't believe that any taxes are good taxes." We've come to expect that kind of piffle from the prime minister. I did sort of a summary post at Greg's place yesterday on the whole shutdown/debt limit showdown situation. One of the key differences, it seems, between those of us who think a disaster is relatively unlikely and those (Chait and Benen, for example) who think it's more likely turns out to be views of John Boehner. I think he's pretty good at what he does -- in very difficult circumstances -- while others don't see a long-term plan, and think that's dangerous. I'll toss in another point here that I should have made in one of my pieces yesterday. I talked about the importance for con... more »

R. v. Massara, 2013 ONCA 519: [15] Mr. Massara takes issue with the fairness of the proceeding on the motion before the appeal court judge and with the disposition. The Provincial Offences Court, and the Ontario Court of Justice to which appeals go from that court, are the face of justice to many citizens. Obviously, this long-delayed (and lengthy) post contains spoilers (to the degree that they're possible for a film where the climax's outcome is known). Zero Dark Thirty has been much debated, as a movie in isolation and as a docudrama purporting to cover recent history. The film raises many issues of artistic rights and responsibilities, and has received a wide range of responses. (I gave a

No Spring Without Blood: Egypt Faces A Legitimacy Crisis And A Terror Crisis

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 23 hours ago
*Photo Source: Ahmed Gomaa (via SFGate).* It is hard to give an opinion on the events in Egypt because there is so much contradictory information coming out of the country. Reporting on the crisis accurately and objectively is damn near hopeless at this point. Any one-sided depiction is naive and ignorant. Just to give one example, leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood claim that over 2,000 of their supporters have been killed by the government, but the country's health ministry puts the number in the low hundreds. The MB uses deception as a tactic to gain public credibility and in... more »

How Democratic Candidates Should Respond To Irresponsible GOP Threats To Throw The U.S. Into Default

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
You've probably seen a parade of Republican clowns wooing teabaggers by insisting that the government be sent into bankruptcy unless Obama agrees to defund the Affordable Care Act. That's all their irresponsible-- and/or delusional playing for the cameras. Most of the noise has been coming from far right Confederates in all white gerrymandered districts. But Wednesday Tom McClintock was up to the same trick in California. Watch him up top. His district is very safe-- with a PVI of R+10. Romney beat Obama there 58-40% and McClintock won reelection last year with 61% and taking 8 of... more »

Guest Post - Reducing the footprint of logistics

Small Footprints at Reduce Footprints - 1 day ago
The burden of logisticsLogistics is a notoriously environmentally unfriendly system, using heavy good vehicles and transport systems to move goods, services and people around the world. The carbon created is staggering and impacts the environment in a huge way. From moving containers across the world through containerised shipping or moving people from point to point, carbon creation is inevitable. However there are many ways that the logistics industry is trying to reduce its carbon footprint, as it understands the need to protect the ecological and environmental systems around it... more »

George Galloway and Respect

A leader in crisis ... stubborn representative voicing discontent and being "unhelpful" ... on this occasion it's not Dave or Ed who are getting it in the neck. This time it's George Galloway and Respect that have lurched into yet another crisis. What sparked this episode off was a bit of old news. Back in June Galloway announced that he has "a committee" looking into the possibility of his running for London Mayor in 2016. "I'd like to fight Boris Johnson ..." he said (this was before Boris announced he would not be seeking re-election). Then yesterday came the news that two Respec... more »

"Sweet Darkness" "When your eyes are tired the world is tired also. When your vision has gone no part of the world can find you. Time to go into the dark where the night has eyes to recognize its own. There you can be sure you are not beyond love. The dark will be your womb tonight. The night will give you a horizon further than you can see. You must learn one thing: the world was made to be free in. Give up all the other worlds except the one to which you belong. Drug Price Control 37: Four Years of the Policy

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 1 day ago
* This is my article yesterday in thelobbyist.biz. ------------ This week, the drug price control or maximum retail price (MRP) policy has turned four years old. The policy was laid out in late July 2009, with the issuance of Executive Order 821 on the day former President Global Arroyo delivered her 9th and last State of the Nation Address (SONA). With a two-weeks additional preparation period, price control became effective in August 16, 2009. The main and unstated purpose of imposing the policy was electioneering. The May 2010 election was just nine months away and the former Pre... more »

Garrett Hardin (1915-2003) was famous for an essay, *The Tragedy of the Commons*, written in 1968. He thought that folks who kept their cattle on common lands had little concern for the condition of the pasture, while private pastures befitted from the careful stewardship of wise ranchers. In 1994, the essay evolved into *The Tragedy of the Unmanaged Commons*. I was unsure of his message. Everyone understands that privately owned cropland is degraded with every pass of the plow, year after year, despite being managed by government rules and regulations. Private land is often pe... more »

What the Egyptian professor says in the video below is not a wild accusation or an absurd conspiracy theory. It is backed up by proof. The U.S. is the devil on the world stage. It created havoc and war in Syria by funding Jihadist terrorists and aiding them via Turkey and Saudi Arabia. It kicked up a huge storm in Libya by bringing down Gaddafi who put a lid on the chaos that was festering in that society. It is kicking up storms everywhere in the Muslim world. I have written a bit about the use of professional sports as a vehicle for war propaganda and militarism, such as when the Harper Government used the Olympic torch relay to promote its war in Afghanistan.
