After London primary school teacher Sabina Nessa was murdered, I saw plenty of comments about how the BBC was seriously underreporting the story, probably for the usual BBC reasons of social cohesion. No one had a suspect then, though many were clearly guessing. Then, particularly after it became clear that the suspect appeared to be white, the BBC's coverage suddenly exploded, and Sabina became a second Sarah Everard - a focus concerning women's safety. . Newsniffer records 17 separate BBC articles about her - the first dated four days after her murder on 17 September. The breaki... read more

There were a total of 13 security incidents recorded in Iraq from September 15-21. That was down from 28 the week before and 20 the first week of the month. More than 75 years old, but it still packed a punch
It seems that some Dutch explosive ordnance disposal specialists were called in to remove a World War II-era *Panzerfaust* rocket. It was designed as a single-shot, disposable anti-tank weapon, similar to (but reportedly much more effective than) the US Bazooka or the British PIAT. The image below, courtesy of Wikipedia, shows a Panzerfaust being prepared for firing. STARTING TOMORROW: Rachel, Donald and Robert (Kagan)!
*MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2021* *But appearing today, Charles Blow:* A troubling fact has become fairly clear within, let's say, the past decade: Enlightenment values are extremely "last millennium" within our failing culture, even within our own blue tribe. This fact becomes more and more evident as the days tick by. For one more example, consider Charles Blow's new column. Also, consider what two commenters said. What should President Biden, and the Biden Administration, have done? What should they have done in response to the recent, rather sudden arrival of a large number of... read more

... the quickest and simplest vignette of the results is provided by A Nod To The Gods. I have no problem with the audit's findings that its final vote totals closely matched those reported immediately after the election. *However, that's not the point.* All the mainstream media and progressive-left pontificating about how this "proves" that the election results were valid is so much hooey. Is the BBC biased?13 hours ago
Two and a half months later...
On the open thread, Charlie referred to the BBC's 'reality check' of the causes of the lorry driver shortage, noting that it underplayed the availability of DVLA tests during the pandemic and overplayed Brexit as a cause. Something interesting has happened to that BBC 'reality check' though. When I glanced at it a couple of days ago I spotted a glaring error. It said that there's now a shortage of more than 100,000 drivers in the UK and that: That number included *tens of thousands* of drivers from EU member states who were living and working in the UK. I'd read in *The Times *t... read more

Post 9/11 Spending by the Pentagon
In a recent posting, I looked at the high budgetary and human costs of the 20 year-long War on Terror. Once again, thanks to the Watson Institute, we have access to research which shows how profitable the war has been for the defense industry. Let's look at some of the highlights of the report. Since the beginning of the War on Terror in the fall of 2001, there have been dramatic increases in funding for the Pentagon as shown on this graphic: The trillions of budgetary dollars have found a nice, cozy home in the pockets of America's defence contractors. Companies have t... read more

Charity work is the most unproductive of labours
This is not about occasional volunteering on a Sunday. This article describes the state orchestrated, regulated and systemic expenditure of labour time in the sphere of charity work in order to compensate for the withdrawal of public services carried out by waged labour. I was asked to write an article on this subject by my Union. That article had two themes. Firstly to criticize the union movement for not taking a lead in community work when they have more members than church goers. Secondly, to show how wasteful charity labour is. This article deals only with the second aspect. read more

Teaching Lessons from Community Theater
I've been directing school and community theater productions for a long time, and I've learned a lot, much of which directly parallels the work of a teacher in the classroom (there are plenty of ways to frame teaching, but for me it has always largely been performance). Here are a few. *Don't Waste Time Pining for the Cast You Don't Have* In professional theater, you can afford to be picky. In community/school theater, not so much. You get what you get, and that's what you have to build a show out of. You can't try to lead the cast as if they were other people with other skill set... read more

True, that work was underway before Justin Trudeau called his long-forecast “snap” election.
