Covid Funds Spent On Police And Prisons
The health and financial impacts of the covid pandemic have been enormous. More than 42 million people have been infected and 679,000 have died in this country. Individuals, businesses and every level of government have suffered as they lost income and revenue. Many workers are unemployed and certain sectors of the economy still suffer disproportionately. There is an easy case to make in favor of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan (ARP) which was passed in order to relieve these many crises. The argument is harder to make when those funds are being used for police and prisons,... read more

Return of the Minority Mammy That is honorable and impressive. A Hardline Taliban Cabinet Will Send Afghanistan Back to the Future
*Abdul Basit* *Afghanistan, Eurasia* The last forty years of conflict in Afghanistan underscores that no group alone can claim a monopoly over political power or effectively manage the country. The concentration of power and centralized governance is a recipe for further instability and chaos. After sweeping to power in Afghanistan on August 15, the Taliban announced its thirty-three-member interim cabinet on September 7 dominated by the group’s loyalists. The head of the Taliban’s Rahbari Shura, or the leadership council, Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund, has been named as the act... read more
Thirty-One Pilots Give Nine Reasons Why the F-35 Is an Absolute Winner
*John Venable* *F-35, Americas* A former F-15C instructor pilot said he consistently beat his former jet in mock dogfights. *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *Pilots have expressed a high degree of confidence in the F-35A fighter jet. Air Force Gen. Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle, former commander of Air Combat Command, in 2016 declared the F-35A fighter jet ready for combat. While many pundits and politicians have questioned the worth of this jet, the only people who know the ground truth are the pilots themselves. Quite a few U.S. pilots currently have been trained to fly Lockheed ... read more
China has a plan to use Arsenal Planes to Take on F-35s
*Robert Farley* *F-22, * China has a pretty crazy plan. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *One report argued that China could defeat a force of 5th generation fighters by expending enormous numbers of older aircraft to force the US planes to use all of their missiles, thus exposing tankers and other infrastructure to attack. If not a battle plane, then what about an arsenal plane? The Air Force is fully aware that its fleet of stealth fighters cannot, due to the need to fly in stealth configuration, carry enough missiles to decisively defeat a larger force of 4th generation ai... read more
No Chance: America’s Enemies Are Rooting for Its F-35 Program to Fail
*John Venable* *F-35, Americas* How could the Russians, Chinese, or even a competitor company accomplish such dastardly work? *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *America’s adversaries would like nothing better than for the United States to curtail its buy of the F-35, just like Washington did for the F-22, because there is not an allied or adversary platform in production that can come close to competing with the F-35. In the last few months, a torrent of scorn has been heaped upon the F-35 stealth fighter jet program, seemingly just in time for the fiscal year 2022 defense bud... read more
Count Them—Ten Reasons Why the F-35 Dominates the Skies
*John Venable* *F-35, Americas* Rough edges are smoothing out. *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *Overall, the F-35A fighter is flying exceptionally well. It now provides the United States with a significant competitive advantage against a peer competitor threat. Shortfalls in repair parts and other smaller issues need to be fixed as soon as possible, but the capabilities that the F-35 provides the nation today along with the dramatic drop in price make Air Force decisions to procure the F-15EX and to not ramp up F-35A procurement very puzzling indeed. I think I have a pretty good grasp of places like Turkey, China, India, Russia, and the European Union. I regret that I am less than sure-footed in Africa and Latin America. During this time I have also learned a fair amount about military matters and various weapons systems, because they cost enormous amounts of money that could be put to much better use than killing and maiming people. But also because it’s hard to resist the absurd: the high performance US F-35 fig... read more

How New Zealand’s Maori Are Reclaiming Land With Occupations
Two years ago, a small pocket of land three kilometres from Auckland’s international airport became the most prominent site of a struggle by Māori, New Zealand’s indigenous people, to reclaim land confiscated by the crown more than 150 years ago. Ihumātao contains evidence of New Zealand’s first commercial gardens, where thousands of hectares were planted with kumara, a tropical sweet potato which thrived in the warm and nutritious soil. The adjacent stonefields, today a category one Unesco heritage site, are rich with ancient nurseries and storage pits. When William Hobson, then-... read more

UK: Why is Owen Jones defending a Nazi collaborator?
Guardian columnist Owen Jones markets himself as a leading leftist voice. His profile on Twitter, where he has more than one million followers, emphasizes his “anti-fascist” credentials. BWorld 506, Vaccination plateau and rising cases
* My article in BusinessWorld, Sept. 20, 2021. Vaccination plateau — rapid rise in vaccination rates as percent of population followed by a quick slowdown with the curve nearly flatlining. That is my simple and personal definition as I have not seen other definitions yet when I checked the various search engines. The term has similar connotations to “vaccine ceiling” and “vaccine burnout.” The best example of a country experiencing a vaccine plateau would be Israel. If Nothing is Read by You Else Today, Read This Report on Business Loan Next
Likewise, many of the larger businesses corresponding to large franchise organizations are submitting for a waiver for his or her explicit medical health insurance program which they’ve had for decades, because they consider their fast turnover, plus the wants of their workers do not warrant such intense payroll deductions for health care insurance coverage. Nor do their workers want to pay it out of their paycheck. Lots of their staff are simply barely getting by, and nearly on the poverty degree. They cannot afford it. Please think about all this. There are millions of folks wit... read more

Being kind
A tweet from Jeremy Vine today... ...hasn't struck people as being very kind, or classy. Here's a flavour of the reaction: - Genuinely. Is there any need for such a spiteful comment? - Anyway, sympathies today for anyone who thought Jeremy Vine was nice, whoever you are and wherever you may be. - It's an astonishingly wrong footed comment from Vine. Perfectly sums up what's wrong with the BBC: deep-seated self regard. Andrew Neil is one of their "stars". Colin comes from a different background, family man, working class and above all *normal*. - Classic B... read more
Airport Security May Soon Get Much Faster
*Stephen Silver* *Airport Security, United States* Per Axios, there’s a possibility that within the next decade, “passengers will be able to sail through a virtually invisible screening portal without stopping… that means shoes stay on, electronics stay in the bag and pockets don't have to be emptied.” Anyone who remembers the 9/11 attacks remembers that in the months and years afterward, airport security got a lot more stringent, not to mention much slower. Further restrictions, from removing shoes to limiting liquids, followed in the coming years. Now, it appears that changes ... read more
Russia’s S-400 Triumf Conducted Live Fire Exercises
*Peter Suciu* *S-400, Europe* Russia continues to demonstrate the capabilities of its S-400 Triumf. Russia’s latest long and medium-range surface-to-air missile system was put through another series of tests this week. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) was used in a live-fire exercise at the Ashuluk training range. The exercises involved teams from the Western Military District’s Leningrad Air Defense Force. “The S-400 Triumf air defense teams and command center practiced repelling a massive missile attack,” the Defen... read more
North Korea Wants You to Know That It Doesn’t Like the AUKUS Deal Either
*Trevor Filseth* *AUKUS, * On Monday, the pact gained a new opponent: North Korea, when a Foreign Ministry official warned that it could “upset the strategic balance in the Asia-Pacific region” and potentially bring about a nuclear arms race. The security and defense pact between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia—better known as the AUKUS deal—has ruffled feathers in Europe and Asia. The main loser in the pact has been France, which had been under a $37 billion contract to build nuclear submarines for the Australian Navy before the contract was unceremoniously... read more
Message Received: Poland's M1 Abrams are Ready for Russia
*Mark Episkopos* *M1 Abrams, * Russia should heed Poland's warning. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *There is little question that their acquisition will substantially enhance the capabilities of Poland’s ground forces in a pitched conflict with Russia. Poland’s defense minister Mariusz Błaszczak has confirmed the country’s plans to buy as many as 250 M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 main battle tanks (MBTs). The announcement follows prior reports indicating that Warsaw is looking to refresh its aging stock T-72 and PT-91 tanks with a modernized MBT platform. The first M1A2 shipments are s... read more
Russia's T-60S has Been Bested
*Mark Episkopos* *T-60S, * [image: T-60S] The Sukhoi T-60S project grew out of the older T-4 concept, a proposed Soviet reply to the XB-70 Valkyrie that never made it past the prototype stage. *Here's What You Need to Remember:* In the end, the T-60S’ well-rounded performance and robust combat capabilities were not worth the risks stemming from its more eccentric construction choices. The Kremlin decided, not without sound reason, that the Su-34 fighter-bomber was a safer bet. The Su-34 has gone on to become a staple of Russia’s strike fighter forces, with as many as 120 models ... read more
In Bid for Legitimacy, Taliban Nominate UN Ambassador
*Trevor Filseth* *Afghanistan, * While some nations have indicated that they will pursue closer commercial relations with the Taliban, including Russia and China, others, including the United Kingdom and Canada, have pledged not to recognize the group as long as its government is not representative of all Afghans and it continues to conduct human rights abuses. Suhail Shaheen, an English-speaking Taliban spokesman and negotiator at the group’s Doha office, has been nominated as its first Ambassador to the United Nations. A letter from Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Min... read more

Beyond Comparative Constitutionalism: Abusive Legal Borrowing
For the Balkinization symposium on Rosalind Dixon and David Landau, Abusive Constitutional Borrowing: Legal globalization and the subversion of liberal democracy (Oxford University Press, 2021). Alvin Y.H. Cheung *The street finds its own uses for things.* - William Gibson, *Burning Chrome* There is broad consensus that liberal democracy is in retreat, despite the spread and apparent triumph of liberal democratic institutions and ideas in the late 20thCentury. Professors Dixon and Landau turn this proposition on its head: they argue that autocrats are increasingly adopting ide... read more

BIW Navy gate vigil continues
Yesterday we were back at the Navy compound gate at Bath Iron Works (BIW) for another of our twice-a-month vigils during the lunch break at the shipyard. Peter Morgan (on the left) and John Morris from Maine VFP held the large banner made for one of our previous peace walks through the state. The banner was painted by Maine artist Russell Wray (Hancock). You can imagine that we got some double-takes on it. It was probably our best day for reactions from shipyard workers and the public. I was holding a sign that reads 'Are we building a sustainable future yet?' The sign wa... read more

"Before They Were An Inconvenience, But Now The Shortages Are Really Beginning To Sting"
*"Before They Were An Inconvenience, * *But Now The Shortages Are Really Beginning To Sting"* by Michael Snyder "Have you noticed that store shelves are starting to get emptier and emptier? During the panic shopping that was sparked by the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020, there were very intense shortages of certain items, but those shortages did not last very long at all. But now there are widespread shortages in just about every sector of our economy, and they are starting to become quite painful. Unfortunately, we are being told to expect the shortages to intensify as we head... read more

A reflection on covid mania
At the beginning of this year I wrote about how the governments of the world had created a collective state of hysteria so intense that the only way they could dig themselves out of the hole they had made was with a magic bullet. That magic bullet was, of course, the vaccines. I wrote that it didn’t really matter how effective the vaccines were in the real world, or whether they prevented transmission. All that mattered was getting every single person on the planet to take the vaccine, after which the politicians would be able to declare victory. read more
Let CBO estimate before you legislate
In my recent *Times* column on the expanded social safety net, the following passage was cut in the editorial process, but it is an important point, which I am afraid is being lost in the Congressional rush to get something done: Team Biden says they won’t pass the bill onto future generations in the form of higher public debt. Whether that’s true is hard to say. The Congressional Budget Office and Joint Tax Committee have not yet scored the bill because it hasn’t been written. Let’s hope that Congressional leadership is patient enough to let the scorekeepers do their jobs before ... read more
