Saturday Snippet: How our forefathers coped with everyday life
Recently I came across a fascinating book titled "Lost Skills of the 19th Century: A Practical Guide to a Variety of Useful Arts No Longer Widely Known or Practiced". The author has taken a common task for every year of the 19th century, and provided an excerpt from a contemporary source describing how to accomplish it. It's a series of vignettes of a way of life long past. It's also a sobering lesson in how hard our forefathers had to work in areas that today we take for granted. For example, they had to preserve meat through the winter by doing it all themselves, whereas... read more
How Taiwan's Submarines Can Deter a Chinese Invasion
*James Holmes* *Taiwan, Indo-Pacific* The Falklands War demonstrates that the presence of even one or two submarines can greatly alter an opponent's strategy. *Here's What You Need To Remember:* Sea-denial platforms riding the waves or prowling beneath can launch torpedo attacks or loft anti-ship missiles against oncoming aggressors—and they can cruise in company with unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles of all types. New submarines for Taiwan? Yes, please! Submarine construction is poised to become a reality now that Washington has lifted restrictions that once pro... read more
How China's Strategy in the South China Sea Could Lead to War
*James Holmes* *Freedom of Navigation, South China Sea* Wanting to fight is another thing altogether. An antagonist who stumbles into the arena of combat is different from one who strides into the arena. *Here's What You Need to Know*: CCP chieftains may be pursuing self-defeating policies and strategies in the South China Sea. They may have *resigned* themselves to a rumble. And opportunism is their watchword: they will doubtless attempt to turn such encounters as do occur to diplomatic and strategic advantage. It’s been said that groupthink is a bad thing, that creative tension... read more
Even for World War II, the Battle for Tobruk was Truly Wild
*Warfare History Network* *WWII History, * Erwin Rommel squared off against Claude Auchinleck at Gazala in Libya in May 1942. At stake was control of the strategic port of Tobruk. During the early morning hours of May 27, 1942, the men of the 3rd Indian Motor Brigade braced themselves for another mundane assignment in the broiling heat of the Libyan Desert. Positioned to the south of the Gazala Line, the British Eighth Army’s defensive stronghold, the Indians were tasked with providing a measure of flank security against a potential Axis attack. Although German forces were known ... read more

What a travesty! Iron Dome Subsidy
For the United States to pay the bill for replenishing missiles in the Israel’s Iron Dome defense system used during the Gaza attack in May is a travesty of law and justice. And for such an initiative to gain support for such a measure by a vote of 420-9 in an otherwise hopelessly divided U.S. House of Representatives should be an embarrassment rather than the occasion for restoring this questionable Special Relationship no matter how adverse its unconditional maintenance is for the wellbeing of the people of the Middle East and the strategic rationality of American foreign policy. read more

The War That Solidified India's Role as a Powerhouse
*Michael Peck* *India-Pakistan War, South Asia* India emerged as a regional power after its 1971 war with Pakistan. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Unfortunately, Pakistan’s humiliation in 1971 spurred it into developing an atomic bomb. This is what happens when you chop a nation in half. Before December 3, 1971, Pakistan was a country suffering from a split personality disorder. When British India became independent in 1947, the country was divided into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. The problem was that East Pakistan and West Pakistan were almost a thousand miles apart, ... read more

Green Energy Companies Fold

The Iran-Iraq War Was a Showdown Between the F-5E and the Soviet MiG-21
*Robert Beckhusen* *F-5E Tiger II, * American and Soviet fighters were put to test during the Iran-Iraq war. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The most intensive period of aerial warfare between Iran and Iraq came to an end in late 1980. Both sides were physically and materially exhausted by four months of intensive operations and heavy losses. There have been countless discussions over which is the better fighter jet— the U.S.-made Northrop F-5E Tiger II or the Soviet MiG-21 Fishbed. That can be a hard argument to settle. The Iran-Iraq war was probably a draw for the two ty... read more

Stop Knocking Down Buildings–Harrabin
By Paul Homewood h/t Ian Magness Even by Harrabin standards, this really is a disgracefully biased piece: Britain’s top engineers are urging the government to stop buildings being demolished. How a Battle Between the U.S. Navy and China Could Play Out
*James Holmes* *U.S. Navy, United States* The U.S. Navy, it seems, is optimized for the blue-water conflagration that’s least likely to occur. Question marks surround who would prevail in the scenarios that are most menacing and most likely to occur. *Here's What You Need to Remember:* If the technology pans out, PLA ballistic missiles could menace U.S. and allied warships plying the seas anywhere within Asia’s second island chain. The upper figure for DF-26 range, moreover, would extend ASBMs’ reach substantially beyond the island chain. Ah, yes, the “carrier-killer.” China is ... read more

More than 31 kilograms of the chemicals were found after officers carried out 13 search warrants near Aldersyde on July 7, the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) announced Wednesday at its Edmonton headquarters. Which Five Aircraft Carriers and Battleships Are the Best of All-Time?
*TNI Staff* *Aircraft Carriers, * James Holmes and Robert Farley tackle this important question. *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *Pundits and analysts have predicted the obsolescence and demise of the aircraft carrier since the waning days of World War II. At the moment, however, the Russian, Indian, British, Chinese, French, and American navies continue to put faith, and resources, into carrier aviation. For decades, the world’s great powers built countless battleships, not only as a way to win the modern naval battles of the time, but to demonstrate their nation's technical... read more
Eastern Europe needs to be urgently Orbanised
Commentary by Štěpán Cháb The elections in Germany [on Sunday, September 26th] look much more frightening than the [October 8th-9th] elections in the Czech Republic. There, the Greens are coming out with their 'nothing is green enough' and Olaf Scholz is likely to take over as chancellor from Angela Merkel. In yesterday's Die Welt, he gave some of his core ideas. Even if we elect the [Nazi-like] Workers' Party to government in the October elections, it will not have the same consequences as the elections in Germany in just two weeks' time [now: tomorrow]. Nevertheless, the importanc... read more

The MG-42, AKA "Hitler's Buzz Saw," is Still An Impressive Weapon
*Paul Richard Huard* *World War II, * The machine gun had its weaknesses. But its raw firepower did ghastly things to Germany’s enemies. *Here's What You Need To Remember: ***The machine gun fired twice as fast as any other weapon in the world at the time. This gave it a distinct sound which scared enough American troops that the War Department made a propaganda film about it. During World War II, American G.I.s called the German MG42 machine gun “Hitler’s buzz saw” because of the way it cut down troops in swaths. *Paul Richard Huard* *Tanks, * Iconic Russian tank wasn’t revolutionary, but it could blow Panzers to Hell. *Here's What You Need to Remember:* The final verdict on the T-34 perhaps is less glowing than the legend that the Soviets weaved around the tank, but the T-34 tipped the balance in favor of the USSR when it came to armored battle and that's what matters. *The T-34 in the hands of determined Soviet tankers routed the Germans at Kursk, the greatest tank battle of all time.* *The T-34 was “undeniably revolutionary, but it was not the first in anything except how to combin... read more
