California Attempts To Rein In Exploitation Of Truck Drivers
Container Connection, which delivers goods to Southern California retailers including Walmart, Ross Dress for Less and for brands Toyota, Whirlpool and Hanes, has a long record of worker misclassification judgments and findings of labor rights violations. It is also the object of an April 14 strike honored by ILWU dockworkers. Giraldo himself was part of a Cal OSHA complaint in March, saying the company failed to protect its workers from COVID-19. Neither Container Connection, nor its parent company, Universal Logistics Holdings, responded to requests for comment. The post Califor... read more

Backlashes, peace, submission and the BBC
Radio 4's *Sunday* had a very *Sunday* take today. I saw a tweet which summed it up very well: *David Robertson*: The weekend of 9/11, the thought crossed my mind that the BBC’s right-on religious affairs programme would use it to talk about Islamaphobia. But no, surely they wouldn’t be so crass? It was worse. No mention of victims. No commemoration. Just Islamaphobia in Bradford. That said, there was even more, as there was also a piece on how Sikhs got mixed up in the original 'backlash against innocent Muslims' after 9/11. The 'backlash' angle has been a classic BBC kneejerk t... read more
Abortion, slavery and the Church
Except maybe videos of actual legal abortions, you'll probably never see one— the dismemberment, little arms and legs in a basin, scalps being sold to labs, scissors in the brain, etc. Big Tech has decided those are too gruesome and violent. Also, I’m not Catholic, but the Roman Catholic church is a huge target, and if Protestants and Bible churches were smarter, they’d realize they are all being attacked. Child sex abuse is a case in point. More teachers abuse children as do more doctors, than Catholic priests. This was actually studied and published in the 90s. And I don’t mean n... read more

Another Anniversary, Another Parade: North Korea Showcases Something, but What?
*Doug Bandow* *North Korea, Asia* And who was the parade aimed towards? Last Thursday was the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Most people wouldn’t see that as much to celebrate. The specific anniversary isn’t special. Moreover, the DPRK—impoverished and isolated, a gulag state, and the world’s only Marxist-Leninist monarchy—doesn’t have much to honor. After 9/11, America was Out Looking for a Fight
*Peter Liberman* *9/11, Middle East* The tragedy led to a lot of belligerence by angry Americans, resulting in unwise wars. Although the U.S. effort to build a stable non-Islamist state in Afghanistan has turned to dust, that war at least had the distinct advantage of punishing the Taliban for harboring the September 11, 2001 perpetrators. The far more calamitous Iraq War, on the other hand, was an unmitigated disaster. Yet, an important reason why so many Americans supported that blunder remains only dimly understood. According to the conventional wisdom, the terror instilled b... read more
