Why the Air Force’s ICBM Infrastructure Needs an Upgrade
*Kris Osborn* *Minuteman III, * The Minuteman IIIs are aging. They are a 1960s technology supported by obsolete equipment. Some people may assume the Air Force’s new ground-based strategic deterrent (GBSD) is purely focused on a fast-tracked replacement of four hundred or more intercontinental (ICBMs) dispersed across vast regions of the United States, yet the effort is actually much more comprehensive and far-reaching. “GBSD is a wholesale change, all the way from the actual missile to the silos that house missiles to the launch centers that house the missile combat crews th... read more
Why Does the Navy Miss the Antiquated and Unreliable F-14 Tomcat?
*TNI Staff* *F-14 Tomcat, Americas* It has something to do with range and speed. *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *The successor to the Super Hornet could have capabilities that resemble the F-14 Tomcat in terms of speed and range. However, the similarities will likely end there. The Tomcat was an antiquated and unreliable beast in the late 1980s and it simply was not up to par during the 1990s and the early 2000s in terms of its avionics. The United States Navy retired the venerable Grumman F-14 Tomcat in 2006 after more than three decades in service. However, the Tomcat’s dem... read more
Was the Taliban’s Top Political Leader Sidelined After a Gunfight?
*Sebastien Roblin* *Afghanistan, * Whether fists and bullets actually flew in the meeting room, as Bloomberg’s anonymous sources claimed, or merely harsh words were exchanged in a tense negotiation—the aftermath was decisive. Political passions have on occasion driven even well-heeled politicians to brawls in the august halls of power. According to some reports, the Taliban, triumphant following their overthrow of the U.S.-backed government of Afghanistan, may not have proven immune to the temptation. In mid-September, Bloomberg News reported allegations that earlier that month,... read more

AUKUS Reveals How America and Europe are Drifting Apart
*Gil Barndollar, Natalie Armbruster* *AUKUS, Europe* The United States is, at last, in the midst of executing a real pivot to the Pacific. America sees its greatest threats and opportunities in Asia. Europeans should plan accordingly. After four long years of dealing with Donald Trump, European leaders breathed an audible sigh of relief when Joe Biden was inaugurated as U.S. president in January. *"The Perfect Storm Is Bearing Down"* by Jim Kunstler "Time, the saying goes, is nature’s way of making sure that everything doesn’t happen at once. So now, maybe, we’re at the event horizon where nature is suspended because everything seems to be happening at once. The Soviet Union designed the Beriev Be-12 seaplane in the late 1950s to hunt NATO submarines. But improving enemy air defenses doomed the slow, ungainly amphibian in that role, so it switched to patrol and search-and-rescue mission.
