Can Bernie Beat The Establishment Machine In South Carolina?

You may remember Gloria Tinubu from last year when we endorsed her run for Congress and she penned several guest posts for us. She ran in 2012 and 2014 and came closer than any other Democrat to winning one of South Carolina's gerrymandered red districts. In 2012 she took 121,418 votes (45%) against Tom Rice's 147,750 (55%). This year she's campaigning for Bernie in South Carolina. "Sanders is in the tradition of President Franklin Roosevelt," she said, "who led our parents and grandparents through one of the most challenging times in our nation’s history. Here, November is doing what it does, dark and wet and broody, though a little warmer than we are used to -- still no frost, tomatoes trying to ripen under a leaden sky streaked with silver. Bedraggled as the garden is, it is still supplying a lot of greens for the humans and the hens. Ducks have been let in early and are high-grading the chard, but also cleaning up wheat seeds in the straw that we have been slowing drawing over the beds, like a blanket for a winter night. Much of my intent has moved indoors, where the wood stove finally has something to do and is slowly taking ove... more »

Wall Street Wants To Buy The Half Of Congress They Don't Already Own

When conservatives were earning their keep from their Wall Street financiers-- working first to water down Dodd-Frank and then to defeat it and, more recently, to repeal it-- they made several arguments they hoped would appeal to the voting public. I mean, you can't very well say, "the banks finance my campaigns so I want to get rid of this legislation that protects consumers from bankster greed." Instead they "repeatedly invoked the law’s 848-page girth-- and its rules on, among other things, trading derivatives and swaps-- as a symbol of government overreach that is killing jobs... more »

Nov. 8: Catching up on the news.

Sometimes, even a good news medium runs a really silly story. This time, it's today's CBC. This is about a university prof in the U.S. who says there is always a moral cost in deciding to fight a war, and in deciding not to fight one. If we fight them to destroy an evil government, then we must avoid killing innocent people. If we don't fight them, then we are abandoning those who need our help. Come on. If we were going to stop evil governments which ignore human rights of their people, then we should have invaded the U.S. when it murdered Vietnamese, Guatemalans, Yemenis, Iraqis... more »

*“You cannot legislate against offence. No legislation, no invention of new crimes and punishments, can possibly introduce irony, forgiveness and good will into minds schooled in the art of being offended. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the US economy created 271,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate dropped to 5%, implying full employment. However, these are bald-faced lies. In fact 23% of all eligible workers have been unable to find jobs after months of trying, and those few that do are 55 years old or older and probably work only part time. Accordingly those in the 25 to 54 bracket officially lost 119,000 of the very few Third-World-type jobs they would be lucky enough to find. And most of those jobless young folks now have to live with their families, making it difficult or impossible to raise families of their own. My Fathers Reactor but not My Father's Reactor Industry

Charles Barton at The Nuclear Green Revolution - 15 hours ago
This post focuses on the Transatomic Power story and its implications for the human future. But first I must go back to the past and some of the reactors my father worked to develop. This turn to the past will lead to Transatomic Power and the role it founders desire to play in the future of humanity. Between 1950 and 1969, My father, C. J. Barton, Sr., played an important role in the development of the MSR at ORNL. He created the carrier/coolant salt formula for both ORNL MSR prototypes, pioneered research into the use of plutonium as a MSR fuel, and made other MSR proposals that... more »

Over the years a number of BBC related blogs have featured HARDtalk. Some have written about it many times. It presents itself as the BBC’s hard-hitting, one-to-one platform, where awkward but penetrating questions are put to important public figures, who are expected in return to give honest, revealing answers, and defend their case against intelligent criticism. Stephen Sackur has a slightly bullying demeanour, which can look deliberately intimidating, like an overly stern schoolteacher “I'm establishing my discipline” (because I’m rather afraid of losing control.) This collection of 9/11 clips show previously unseen footage that raise some serious questions about the September 11th attacks. The close up of the plane flying into the WTC is incredible, as is the clip from the Pentagon showing what appears to be a cruise missile flying into it. According to the video’s description: How does one remove three buildings in the heart of the busiest city in the world, particularly when two of them are due for the removal of asbestos (both towers), without clearing the entire city (something ‘no one’ could afford), when it NEEDS to be done, ASAP? Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
Scientists from the CDC have discovered a worrying new cancer-like condition in a 41-year-old man who is believed to have contracted the disease via tapeworms. This is the world’s first cast of cancer transmission from a parasite to a human, and involved an HIV patient from Colombia who developed multiple large tumors all over his body. He died 72 hours after being diagnosed. Washingtonpost.com reports: Local doctors biopsied those tumors and found that the cells acted like cancer cells in their destructiveness but were strange in other respects. For one, they were about 10 times s... more »

Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
A declassified report named “1983 War Scare” has disclosed just how close the world came to an all-out nuclear war which would almost have certainly killed us all. The National Security Archive published a 1990 report on the Soviet War Scare of 1983, which describes just how close the US and Soviet Union were to going to war. Missed warning signs “According to the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB), the United States “may have inadvertently placed its relations with the Soviet Union on a hair trigger” during the 1983 NATO nuclear release exercise, Able Archer 83... more »

Investigation Before Speculation

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 1 day ago
"While new theories on the Russian plane crash in Egypt emerge every day, the investigation should collect facts 1st, then draw conclusions" — the Lemniscat (@theLemniscat) November 7, 2015 "The Washington post editors peddle the crackpot idea that the CIA smuggled a bomb on board of the Russian airline that went down over the Sinai peninsula. Or something like that. No one else, as far as I can tell, has offered such an idiotic conspiracy theory. So far there is not even a shred of real evidence that a bomb took down the plane. All we know is that the black boxes on board of the p... more »

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Yesterday President Obama succumbed to the same pressure from serious activists that made Hillary Clinton switch positions on the Keystone XL Pipeline a month or so ago. Friday morning he announced that the 7-year "review" of the Keystone XL Pipeline project was over and that the controversial and dangerous Pipeline would not be built. “The pipeline would not make a meaningful long-term contribution to our economy,’’ the president said in remarks from the White House. The move was made ahead of a major United Nations summit meeting on climate change in Paris in December, when Mr... more »

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
The general heading the U.S. Air Forces Central Command said today that the reduction in U.S. and coalition air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria should increase in the future. Reuters reports: Lieutenant General Charles Brown told reporters at the Dubai International Air Chiefs Conference that the reduction in air strikes was due to weather and to a slowdown in activity on the ground and not due to the s... more »
